2 Seminar Aims Review potential marked-based instruments for peatland conservation and restoration Increase awareness of governments of the importance of and the opportunities for peatland conservation and restoration for climate protection Develop national action plans Target group Ministries of Environment and Finance Nature Conservation Agencies Land users/managers/farmers NGOs Scientists Target countries Belarus Ukraine Russia Poland Baltic countries Outputs Review of the current extent of peatlands, their protection status, current use and trends (desk study for Belarus, Ukraine, European Russia) Review of the benefits of rewetted peatlands Critical review of marked-based instruments applying for peatland conservation Recommendations and action plan to help countries elaborate and implement market-based instruments for long-term peatland conservation and restoration Outcomes The workshop will contribute to enhanced conservation and restoration of peatlands reduce greenhouse gas emission from mires in Eastern Europe to fulfil the obligations of the UNFCCC, the associated Kyoto Protocol, the CBD and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands develop partnerships and collaboration between Eastern European countries on developing and implementing market-based instruments for peatland conservation
