IFE 20 th March a game changer? Andreas Bratland, The Research Council of Norway The Research Council of Norway
RCN s targeted instruments for energy R&D ENERGIX ( 55 M annually) Renewables, infrastructure and end use (transport, industry and builidings) CLIMIT ( 12 M annually) CO 2 Capture and Storage Centres for Environmentalfriendly Energy Research - FME ( 21 M annually) 2
Centres for Environment-friendly Energy Research (FME) - a strong initiative in the energy sector Encourage enterprises to innovate, based on research Facilitate alliances Develop research groups to cutting edge international standards Stimulate researcher training on important areas 3
Deliverables from the FMEs, since publications in scientific journals, conference proceedings etc. 200 PhD students associated with the centres 50 post.docs 130 partners, 83 from industry 1500 media articles 100 patents, licenses, new methods etc. 4
What has been achieved trough the centres? Active and visible brands within each thematic area Strong connections across disciplines and institutions Strengthened and more structured energy research in Norway Important nodes for international cooperation Increased awareness of R&D in industry 5
Eight new FMEs appointed in May mill. Euros in public funding 50 research partners 240 industry partners
New FME - centres ( ) Centre for intelligent electricity distribution CINELDI Centre for an Energy Efficient and Competitive Industry for the Future HighEFF Norwegian CCS Research Centre NCCS Norwegian Research Centre for Hydropower Technology HydroCen Mobility Zero Emission Energy Systems MoZEES Research Centre for Sustainable Solar Cell Technology Norwegian Centre for Sustainable Bio-based Fuels and Energy Bio4Fuels The Research Centre on Zero Energy Neighbourhoods in Smart Cities ZEN Centre
New FME - centres ( ) Centre for intelligent electricity distribution CINELDI Centre for an Energy Efficient and Competitive Industry for the Future HighEFF Norwegian CCS Research Centre NCCS Norwegian Research Centre for Hydropower Technology HydroCen Mobility Zero Emission Energy Systems MoZEES Research Centre for Sustainable Solar Cell Technology Norwegian Centre for Sustainable Bio-based Fuels and Energy Bio4Fuels The Research Centre on Zero Energy Neighbourhoods in Smart Cities ZEN Centre
RCN s expectations to MoZEES Significant contributions to the scientific and industrial state-of-the-art Manage the combination of world-class research and industrial needs DNV GL s concept for autonomous electric freight transport Take interdisciplinarity seriously Establish strong networks Become the preferred Norwegian partner for international cooperation on mobile zero emission energy systems Ruter s future electric buses Provide knowledge based information to the public on zero emission transport Visibility and ability to document the added value of being an FME Selfa Arctic s «plug-in hybrid» commercial fishing vessel
When we meet for the MoZEES final conference 2025: CO 2 emmisions from transport in Norway are decreasing rapidly Battery-electric energy solutions have expanded substantially and are important, also for urban bus transport, short distance ferries and short distance freight transport Hydrogen-based energy solutions are on the verge of becoming cost effective for medium and long distance transport on sea, road and rail, both for freight- and public transport Everyone knows that MoZEES has played an important role in taking battery- and hydrogen-electric solutions to the marked by: Developing new battery and hydrogen materials Developing new components and technologies Facilitating the implementation of zero-emission solutions on road, rail and sea All partners of MoZEES can proudly enjoy that they have been important parts of the transformation to zero-emission transport
