Perfrmance Objective(s): Given 5 pictures f recyclable material, the student will write the name f the bject int the clumn n the wrksheet with 60 percent f their answers crrect. (3 ut f 5 blanks) Given 5 pictures f recyclable material, the student will describe ne use fr the recyclable materials with 100 percent cmpletin. Assessment: Students will be assessed n the wrksheet in the secnd clumn fr accuracy f their answers based n the 5 recyclable materials. The third clumn will be assessed n cmpletin based n the idea fr a re-use f the material that is given. Students will be assessed n cmpletin fr the item because the answers are based n pinin and will vary because there is n right r wrng answer. Advance Preparatin by Teacher: Just a Dream by Chris Van Allsburg Fr the class: trash bag; varius trash materials such as sft drink cans, milk cartns (plastic and cardbard), tilet paper tubes, paper twel tubes, yarn, frzen dinner trays (plastic), newspaper, plastic juice drink jugs, fabric scraps, felt, ice cream tubs, egg cartns, pp tabs, ld nuts and blts, wd scraps (small pieces); cmputer paper bxes (items frm each sectin aluminum, cardbard, plastic, paper, glass) Labels 5 different large tubs Prepare a bag f trash fr the students. The bag shuld cntain examples f cmmn materials that can be recycled (fur r five pieces each f cardbard, paper, plastic, glass, aluminum etc.). Print ff assessment wrksheet Glue Tape Markers

2 Prcedure: Intrductin/Mtivatin: Trash the rm befre the students enter with items that can be recycled as well as trash that cannt. Upn the students entering the rm, let them explre hw the rm lks like withut making any cmments. (Gardner s: Bdily-Kinesthetic) Ask the students: (Blm s: Knwledge) What d yu think happened in here? Hw d yu feel abut the changes? Name items that yu see. Wuld it be easy t leave these items here? What happened if small children and animals lived in this rm? What culd we d with the items n the flr? Have the students return t the stry area n the flr. Intrduce the bk Just a Dream by Chris Van Allsburg. SUMMARY: Yung Walter is a careless by wh tsses rubbish n the grass, thinks recycling is a waste f time, and mcks his neighbr, Rse, fr her delight in the tree she has just received fr her birthday. Walter lngs t live in the future, which he imagines t be full f rbts, tiny persnal planes, and machines that make life easier. One night when he falls asleep, his wish t live in the future cmes true. Hwever, his dreams carry him int a future nt filled with the rbts and machines he believes will make life better, but instead ravaged by the careless mistakes f the past. Walter travels in his sleep t the midst f an endless garbage dump n his wn street, t a tree in a frest that is abut t be cut dwn, t the tp f a smkestack belching pllutin, t the middle f a fishless sea, and t ther places that shw him pssible negative versins f the future. When he wakes up, he is a changed by. On his birthday, he asks fr a tree, which is planted near Rse's birthday tree. When he falls asleep that night, he dreams f the future again. In this dream, he is shwn a different versin instead f a wrld f rbts and machines, laundry hangs n the line, a man mws his lawn with a mtr less mwer, and Walter is delighted t see that the tw little trees have grwn tall and strng in the clean air. Step-by-Step Plan: A. Srting Trash 1. Present the prepared bag f trash t the students. 2. Set ut cmputer paper bxes fr each kind f material in the bag (ne fr aluminum, cardbard, plastic, paper, glass). D nt label the bxes ahead f time. 3. Give each student ne item ut f the trash bag. Distribute different types f items evenly. 4. Once students have their items, have them try t srt themselves int grups f similarly made items. 5. Encurage students t figure ut a way t frm grups. (Any way the students cme up with is acceptable as lng as they can explain why and hw they did what they did.) (Gardner s: Interpersnal) If students end up nt gruping themselves by the make f the materials, ask further questins t guide them such as: D yu think yur item is made f the same material as [insert student name] s? (Blm s: Synthesis) If students d grup themselves by the make f the materials, cntinue by having each grup talk fr a minute abut what materials make up its items. B. Labeling the Trash 1. Once students in each grup decide which material their items have in cmmn, prvide them with a label, marker, and a bx in which t put their items. Have the students label the bx using phnetic spelling and knwn sight wrds. 2. As a class, have each grup share the items in their bxes and the kinds f material the items have in cmmn. 3. Put the bxes in the center f the rm r n a special gd junk shelf where students can srt additinal items frm the bag r items they bring in frm hme thrughut the year. (Gardner s: Existential) 4. Explain examples t the students each f the 5 items that are mst cmmnly recycled. Plastics (milk jugs, shamp bttles, detergent bttles, vitamin bttles, plastic sda and water cntainers etc. Mst centers will nly accept thse plastics labeled with the PETE 1 and HDPE 2 symbls. These can generally be fund mlded int the bttm f the cntainers. If yu can't identify the type f plastic, dn't include it. Mst facilities als require that yu remve the cap since it is usually made f a different type f plastic. Sme facilities will accept additinal plastics, s if yu are s inclined, check with yur lcal recycling center.)

Sme paper items like paper milk cartns and drink bxes are lined with wax r plastic and are ften nt accepted) Crrugated Cardbard (shipping and packaging bxes, usually identifiable by a squiggly layer f paper sandwiched between sheets. Used pizza bxes are ften NOT accepted) Glass (pickle jars, jelly jars, etc. Occasinally a center will accept nly certain "clrs" f glass. Light bulbs, Pyrex, ceramics, and mirrrs are NEVER accepted. Glass is becming less accepted because f the ptential f wrker injuries due t brken glass.) Aluminum Cans (yu all knw these, the Cke, Pepsi, and Sprites f the wrld) Clsure: Have the students explre the trash t make new uses f it instead f thrwing it away. Prvide materials needed. Allw students t share these items t their peers in the classrm. Allw students t bring items in t re-use fr prjects in the classrm. Encurage students t cntinue t recycle at hme!
