3 3 Intrductin I have chsen t use a children s pem The Owl and the Pussycat t incrprate Language Arts, Scial Studies and Visual Arts tgether. It will be cmpleted ver the span f five weeks. The pem was published in 1871 by Edward Lear and had becme a classic nnsense pem. It tells the tale f fur animals given human characteristics (an wl, cat, pig and turkey) and leads t the wl and cat getting married. We will explre the idea f animals taking n humanistic characteristics (anthrpmrphic) and talk abut if this is realistic r nt. This pem is ften sung t music, which will be the way in which I infuse the arts int this unit plan. The unit will start by intrducing this pem t the class. We will begin by reading the pem tgether every day as part f the student s language arts petry reading in the mrning, as part f the mrning rutine. We will read the pem fr a week and then the secnd week we will add it t the music and learn t sing it. The class will be making many different crafts that relate t the pem as well. As the student has becme mre familiar with this pem, we will explre the meaning f sme wrds in the pem such as runcible spn and five pund nte. I will bring in an example f a runcible spn, als the students will be taught abut what a five pund nte is and this will incrprate sme scial studies units. The unit will cnclude with the students preparing a theatrical perfrmance f this pem t be revealed at the mnthly student assembly. The children will take the rles f the wl, pussycat, pig and turkey and the rest f the students will be invlved in singing, playing music and creating the cstumes and stage.

4 4 Gals and Benefits f Unit The gals f this unit are t get students invlved in making a class prductin f this pem. It is a shrt and easy pem fr the students t learn but it will make a lasting impressin n the students as there very first class prductin! Thrughut the unit, the students will wrk n Language Arts, Scial Studies and Visual Arts. Since the students are familiar and cmfrtable with the pem, they will be at ease when cmpleting wrksheets and crafts t assciate with the pem. The benefits f this type f Arts Infusin unit are that it is crss-curricular, simple, fun and infrmative fr the students. This pem will intrduce new wrds t the students, it is a silly nnsense pem that they will enjy and have fun with, while cmpleting the wrk t g alng with it. In additin, it is very easy fr the children t memrize and learn hw t sing this pem. This pem will be n that the students will remember fr years and years after they leave primary and the play will be smething they can be very prud f. The students will get the chance t perfrm this play twice, nce fr the schl assembly and nce fr their parents and guardian at a class scial afternn. The students will benefit frm the chance t publically perfrm and shw their peers what they have been wrking s hard n. This will give them cnfidence and pride in their wrk. The class will present fr a secnd time later in the week, which will give them an pprtunity t discuss and change anything that they were nt happy with in the first perfrmance. This will be a reflectin and adjustment activity fr the students t plish the play, while als discussing all the psitive aspects f the perfrmance as well.

5 5 Crss-Curricular Cmpnents Language Arts: The students will be wrking n their literacy skills thrughut this unit. Reading the pem and interpreting the pictures f the stry will be the first activity. Frm this, the students will cmplete wrd wrksheets t practice their reading, sunding ut wrds and writing skills. In additin, sme wrk n rhyming wrds and understanding the cncept f animals taking n human characteristics in literature will be intrduced t the students. An verall aspect f Language arts that the students will learn is that a strybk r pem can turn int s much mre than just wrds t read and they will see this thrugh the crafts, scial studies lessns and play that they will be wrking n. Scial Studies: The Scial Studies aspect f this unit will be thrugh the explratin f the wrds and bjects in this pem. A lessn is set aside fr teaching the students what a Five- Pund nte, a Bng-Tree, a Shilling and a Runcible spn are. Examples f sme f these bjects will be in the class fr students t see. The Five-Pund nt and shilling will lead t a discussin n different types f mney in the wrld and hw nt all mney is like Canadian mney. Visual Arts: Thrughut this unit, the children will cmplete multiple crafts, which relate t the characters in the pem. The simple task f singing the pem instead f reading it will get the students t think f the pem as mre than just a stry and get them ready fr the play. All f crafts which they student make will be used in the play prductin which is the largest part f the visual arts aspect. The students will create and act ut a play using this pem as they stryline. There will be rm fr adaptatins and alteratins as the students wish, hwever the main stryline will be fllwed.

6 6 Daily Outline **This unit will take place ver the span f five weeks. Of curse, like any plan there is rm fr adaptatin and rearranging s it des nt need t fllw this utline perfectly. ** Week # 1 Day 1-5 Bring the class tgether at the reading crner. Read the strybk The Owl and the Pussycat By Edward Lear. Take time t lk thrugh the pictures and discuss the details abut the stry. Once the students return t their seats present the students with their wn cpy f the pem The Owl and the Pussycat By Edward Lear (Appendix A). Read the pem everyday in their petry du-tang fr the next week s they becme familiar with it. Week # 2 Day 6 Read the pem and discuss with the children that we will be lking int this pem further ver the next mnth. We will start the wrk based n this pem by clring a picture f the wl and the pussycat. Once we have read the pem pass ut a picture t each student and give him r her time t cmplete clring, encurage the students t take their time, try t be neat and use many different clrs in the picture (Appendix B). Day 7 Read the pem with the students. Intrduce the music t the pem and teach the students hw t sing the pem. Sing the sng a cuple f times and then allw the students t finish the clring f the picture frm last day. Day 8 Practice singing the pem with the class a cuple f times. Discuss with the class hw there are rhyming wrds in the pem. Talk abut what rhyming means and ask them fr examples. Present the students with the first tw f the wrd wrksheets (Appendix C). Get the students t read the

7 7 wrds alud tgether and then practice writing there letters by tracing the wrds n the sheet. Once they have traced all the wrds they may clr the pictures. Day 9 Sing the pem with the class twice and then review the wrd wrksheet frm the previus day. Hand ut the last tw wrd wrksheets t the students and read the wrds alud as a grup. Have the students trace all the wrds and then they may clr nce all the wrds are cmplete. Day 10 Sing the pem with the class. Make sure that the wrd wrk sheets are all cmpleted and clured. Give the students if time t cmplete the wrd wrksheets if needed. Read all the wrds with the students. Once the wrksheets are cmpleted, bring the grup back tgether and discuss sme f the characteristics f the main characters (Owl, Pussycat, Pig and Turkey). Pint ut t the students that the characters are all animals yet have characteristics f humans. Discuss this cncept with the students and ensure that they understand. Week #3 Day 11 Sing the pem with the students. Discuss the wrk cvered s far n the pem (wrd wrksheets and animals acting like humans). Hand ut the materials that are needed t make the Paper Bag Cat Craft (Appendix D). Shw an example t the students and take them gradually thrugh the prcess f making this craft. Ensure the students write their name n the back f it and nce they are cmplete, pst the cats n the class bulletin bard in the hallway. Day 12 Give time t finish the Paper Bag Cats if sme students still need time. Once the Cats are all cmplete, discuss sme f the wrds in the pem with the class. Wrds such as Five pund nte, Bng-Tree, Piggy-Wig, Shilling and Runcible spn. These are wrds that the children mst likely will nt knw the meanings f and wuld benefit frm further discussin n the terms. The teacher will bring in examples f a runcible spn and a five-pund nte. Take time t review the histry behind this pem and hw Edward Lear wrte many nnsense pems in his

8 8 time. Sme f the wrds he even made up fr this pem such as Runcible spn (Lear cined this term). Day 13 Sing the pem and review what sme f the wrds mean. Talk abut the wl and his characteristics as the main character. Shw the class an example f the Handprint Owl Craft that they will be making this class (Appendix E). Take the students gradually thrugh the prcess f making the wl. Allw the students t adapt and persnalize their wl. Make sure their names are n the back f the wl and then pst the wls n the class bulletin bard in the hall. Day 14 Sing the pem with the class then allw time fr the students t cmplete the wl craft frm the previus day. Day 15 Take a day t discuss with the class the plans f turning the pem int a play fr them t present fr the schl at the end f mnth assembly as well as fr their parents and guardians n a Friday afternn scial. Assign rles t each student including set design and cstumes and then allw fr brainstrming f ideas n hw t present this play. Week # 4 Day 16, 17 and 18 It is time t get deep int the play planning and practice. Get the students cmfrtable with their rles and lay ut the play s that there is a narratr reading and the students will have minimal lines t remember. Run thrugh the lines and singing with the characters. Day 19 Take a break frm practicing the play and we will make a craft tday. Assemble the students t shw an example f the Paper Plate Pig that they will be making tday (Appendix F). Distribute the materials the students will need. Tday paint and prepare the paper plates, legs, nse and

9 9 anything else needed t be painted. Make sure the student put their name n everything. Allw the materials t dry ver night and cntinue the prject next day. Day 20 Sing thrugh the pem with the class and then cntinue t put tgether and finish the Paper Plate Pig craft, fllw the assembly instructins fund in Appendix F. Week #5 Day 21 The students will wrk n sme set design tday. Shw the class and example f the Magic Stars Craft that they will be making tday (Appendix G). This is a very simple craft that the students will start and finish tday. See the full instructins in Appendix F. The star pictures will be psted n the wall fr the set. Day This is the last week f practicing the play befre the big perfrmance. Run thrugh the play every day and make sure the children nw their rles, lines and ques. The cstumes will be minimal clthes fund and purchased frm Frenchy s and Luis Gd Used Clthing Stres. The set design fr the play will be the star pictures made at the start f the week. As well as having the animal crafts that the students have made ver the past mnth. Presentatin Days! The students will put n the play fr the while schl at the mnthly student assembly. This will be ur practice fr the big day when we present fr the students parents and guardians. The class will hst a parent scial afternn where they will shw their parents all the hard wrk that has been put int this play as well as all the crafts they have made.

16 16 Paper Bag Cat Craft Materials Needed: Yu can make a grey cat like the ne in the picture r use different clrs fr an range, brwn, tan r black cat. a paper lunch bag tw sheets f cnstructin paper r paint in the clr yu're making yur kitty a printer paper fr the printer sme crayns scissrs glue big wiggly eyes ADAPTATIONS (Printing) Yu can either print just template ne r bth templates. The mre children yu have per adult and the yunger the children are, the simpler (less templates) yu want the craft t be. If yu are nt sure hw many templates yu shuld use, print bth, but hide #2. If the kids make it thrugh #1 and are eager fr mre, bring ut the ther. If they are tired f crafting, save them fr anther day r just discard them. GET FAMILIAR WITH YOUR PAPER BAG: Lk at yur paper bag. It shuld be clsed and flat like a piece f paper On ne side, it is all smth. This will be the BACK f yur puppet

17 17 It is imprtant that all the kids get the back and frnt straight at the beginning! On the ther side there's a flippy tab This flippy tab will be the HEAD Lift the flippy tab up a bit. Underneath f the tab will be the muth, When the child puts their hand in the bag, they will be able t make the puppet talk. Lk at the rest f the frnt f the bag. This will be the BODY. Lk at the sides f the bag. There shuld be a FLAP f paper. We will be slipping the arms (template 2) int this flap. If the kids gf and glue the arms nt the frnt r back f the bag, it is nt a big deal. TEMPLATE #1 Cver the paper bag with cnstructin paper (just glue it n and trim) r paint the paper bag and let dry. Glue the muzzle nt the HEAD. It shuld verlap the bdy a bit. Glue the nse nt the HEAD. It shuld verlap the muzzle a bit. Glue the eyes nt the HEAD abve the nse. If yu like, yu can use wiggly eyes instead f the paper template pieces. Glue the ears nt the sides f the HEAD Glue the tngue underneath the flippy tab s yu can see part f the circle sticking ut frm under the muzzle. Glue three whiskers (lng, thin rectangle pieces) nt either side f the muzzle. Glue the tummy nt the bdy. TEMPLATE #2 Glue the arms int the FLAP. Glue the tail nt the BACK.

26 26 Appendix F Paper Plate Pig Craft Materials yu will need fr the paper plate pig are: 8 paper plates (either dinner size r dessert size), 1 egg cartn cup (Nse) 2 Tilet paper rlls fr dessert size plates r 4 Tilet paper rlls fr dinner size (legs) scissrs tape r glue 1 piece f pink paper (r white paper clured pink) Pink paint and black paint r marker. OPTIONAL: ggly eyes and a pipe cleaner. If yu d nt have pink paint, cut up 1 inch squares f pink cnstructin paper r tissue paper and glue thse t the paper plates (like md pdging) instead f painting. We are ging t get t knw ur paper plates. The paper plates have a BOTTOM (the part yu set n the table) and a TOP (the part yu put the fd n). Paint the bttm f the paper plates, egg cartn cups and tilet paper rlls pink and let dry.

27 27 If yu are ding this with an lder child, yu can try making up a tngue twister t say while yu are ding the prject (smething like "painting pink pig plates" r "please paint the pig plates pink"). Split yur plates int sets f tw. Glue (r staple) each set f tw tgether rims t rim (Tp f plates facing in). Glue the bttm f the fur sets tgether s yu have a stack f paper plates (see pht). The tp plate in the stack will be the face. If yu are using tw tilet paper rlls, cut them in half. If yu are using fur tilet paper rlls, lk at the dimensins and trim them dwn a bit, if yu want t (s the legs are prprtinate with the pig). Fld yur pink paper in half and cut ut a triangle (yu will end up with tw identical ears). Glue r tape these t the back f the frnt set f plates. Draw/paint black nstrils nt the egg cup and glue it t the face. Draw/paint black eyes nt the pig, attach ggly eyes, r draw eyes n white paper and glue them n. Draw/paint a black muth nt the pig r draw a muth n white paper and glue it n. Once everything is cmpletely dry, pinch the tp f the tilet paper rlls and slide them between the plates t make fur legs. Tape r glue in place. Twist a pipe cleaner int a piggy tail and pke it thrugh the back plate (use a sharp pencil t make a small starter hle) r take a circle f pink paper and cut it in a spiral and glue it t the back plate. ENJOY!

28 28 Appendix G Magic Stars This is a fun craft fr very yung children t make -- anyne wh can use a paintbrush can make this craft. Materials: white paper (cardstck, cnstructin paper r heavy bnd cmputer paper wrk best) white wax crayn (crayla, etc) tempera paint (Black r Navy Blue) paint brush Instructins: Draw stars n the white paper with white crayn. Fr very yung children, an adult can d this prir t craft time -- it will make the prject seem very magical t them Mix tempera paint with water t make a wash (abut 3/4 tempera t 1/4 water -- Add a bit mre water if the paint is still quite thick) Paint ver the white paper with yur tempera paint wash and watch the stars magically appear in the night sky!
