In order to reduce the instances and mitigate the severity of work related accidents PGW has implemented several new programs to promote a safety culture
Incentive Programs Employee Safety Recognition PPE Changes Communication Union/Management Safety Committees Safety Blitz Scorecard DriveCam
PGW is rolling out incentive programs that encourage employees to use there PPE and practice safe working habits
For immediate recognition of employees who are using the appropriate PPE and taking the time to make safety a priority all supervisors have stickers that can be given to employees and placed on their hard hat to show they are safe and an example to others
Helmet stickers, also known as reward decals and pride stickers, are stickers that are affixed to a high school or college football player's helmet. They can denote either individual or team accomplishments.

Promote employee competition to collect stickers through visible safety conscious acts and precautions Identify safety conscious employees as role models for less tenured
Every 6 months employees that demonstrate that they are safety conscious are allowed to choose one of the following awards: Multitool Knife Cooler Water Bottle Long Sleeve FR Shirt w/safety Logo

Each section (Distribution and Field Services) has metrics set from a corporate level If the section collectively stays at or below their numbers everyone receives a safety award Higher price ticket items then individual awards Field Services Section has met the goal for the last two fiscal years!

Given the inherently dangerous nature of our line of work no amount of preemptive tracking will completely eliminate accidents In an effort to mitigate the occurrence and severity of accidents that do occur, PGW constantly evaluates new and/or improved PPE
PGW has moved from safety orange vests to high visibility fluorescent yellow Also added reflective stripes to FR coveralls for added visibility where a safety vest is not required
Coordinated effort involving Union Safety Committee members to choose more comfortable styles that met safety standards.
In situations for Field Service employees where a hard hat is not required, bump cap provides added head protection when entering basements where there is low overhead clearance
Vehicle Parking and Safety Cones Procedure Designed to address our high number of striking stationary objects in vehicles Supplemented our Circle of Safety sticker initiative

In the past, all field communication was funneled through several ways: ed to direct report Field Supervisors to cover in stand up meetings Department newsletter Annual training Promotional schools
In the last several years we have upgraded all field force cell phones to durable smart phones. capable and can attach pdf
Quarterly High Level Safety Stand Up Meetings Employees hear a unified safety message from Upper Management One Wednesday every three months Talking points compiled from a variety of sources Injury/Accident statistics reviewed Lessons Learned reviewed Top behaviors identified in DriveCam Rotating safety topics (PPE, Safety Policies, etc)
Every employee is an equal partner in the safety process. There is no boss/subordinate relationship, no rank when it comes to safety. You either have a safe attitude or you do not, and since your behavior is dictated by your attitude, safety must be a part of work and not merely a requirement of work. Each employee has unique skills to bring to the committee s mutually shared goal of working in a safe manner.
Was designed as a supplement for the Quarterly High Level Safety Stand Up Meetings Consist of Upper Management Employees whose normal functions are primarily in the office Allows them a chance to interact with the Field Personnel in a positive way and promote safety at the same time
Every employee has a safety score that indicates how safety conscious that employee is If the score is significantly higher than the employees peers supervision can address safety related issues with the employee before they lead to a serious accident
There are several metrics that are tracked with leading indicators weighted more heavily All reported injuries are 1pt, injuries that could have been prevented with proper PPE are 2pt Preventable motor vehicle accidents are 2pt PPE violations are 4pt Worksite infractions are 4pt Traffic and vehicle infractions are 4pt
Employees with scores in the top 10% of there department are put on a list for the Safety Supervisor to cover This allows the Safety Supervisor to preemptively address issues with employees regarding there safety in the field before it leads to a serious accident
Select number of vehicles equipped with technology Employee receives camera if certain criteria is met (i.e. PMVA) Used as a coaching tool to identify bad driving habits Used to reinforce the principles of the Smith System of Defensive Driving
Our goal is to encourages employees to put safety first in all that they do This is helping us improve our safety culture and achieve our ultimate goal which is: All employees go home to their families the same way they came to work
Employee who received a DriveCam was coached on several occasions concerning his inconsistent seat belt usage (PGW policy requires its use at all times). He stated that over time his behavior had changed (he would never wear a seatbelt on personal time). Employee was involved in a serious auto accident on his way home from work and believes that wearing his seat belt saved him from more serious injuries.
