1 USA BADMINTON LEVEL 3 HIGH PERFORMANCE COURSE OVERVIEW The Level 3 High Performance Course is designed as a modular and assessment based course. It allows the coach to complete their course within a longer time frame of up to 3 years. This course intends to build on the training and current competency of the coach. The USA Badminton (USAB) Coaching Development Program is guided by the following: Coach Centered Competency U.S. Athlete Centered Participant Centered Continuous Learning The Level 3 High Performance course is designed based on the above guiding pillars and aims to ensure that the participating coach is well equipped with the relevant skills to continuously enhance the performance of his/her athletes COURSE DELIVERY The course empowers the coach to have an active role in learning, researching and sharing their work and findings in the form of presentations, interviews, report writing, interaction through shadowing and mentoring relationships. CORE MODULES The USAB Level 3 High Performance Coach (HPC) Certification Program will consist of the following core modules: Leadership Coaching Process Conditioning Match Analysis and Problem Solving Planning: Periodization for An Individual or A Team Psychology Athlete Management Advanced tactics Other areas that are related to high performance including USOC, BWF and other external Coach Education Resources QUALIFICATION ASSESSMENT The coach will be assessed through completed assessment tasks which will be in the form of writing, oral, video and hands on projects involving real coaching environment and players. TIME FRAME L3HPC certification process involves: o Practicum period of 3 years from the date of expression of interest o Total coaching contact hours - an accumulation of 1,000 hours which needs to be accrued within the practicum period The practicum period and coaching contact hours enable the provisional L3HPC to : o complete the organization of documents, projects, extended modules, professional development, and assessments o hands-on application in projects, o On-site and face-to-face assessments USA Badminton Coaching Development - Level 3 High Performance Course 1
2 The USAB Director of Coaching & High Performance reserves the right to waive requirements on a case by case basis. Waivers may be given to both experienced USA and international high performance coaches with proven track record COST The USAB Level 3 HP course fee is $750. This fee may be reviewed by USAB in the future. The cost covers the facilitation of the course. This fee must be paid to USA Badminton by the candidate at the time of application. All other expenses incurred by the applicant including travel, accommodation and meals must be borne by the applicant. PREREQUISITE Applicant is U.S. citizen Applicant should contact the Director of Coaching & High Performance (DCHP) to express interest for Level 3 High Performance course. Applicant must be a current USAB certified L2 High Performance Coach (L2HPC) living in the U.S. If the coach has not been previously certified but has a dedicated high performance program in place for 4 or more years, and/or has developed high performance athletes with BWF ranking who regularly compete in international tournaments may contact the DCHP to express interest. Expression of interest and/or opportunity to attend assessment does not automatically guarantee the applicant being awarded the Level 3HP certification. If the applicant does not meet the required criteria and standards, the Competency Assessment Panel may or may not award a certification level. Applicant must be currently coaching in his/her HP program on a day to day basis (coaching also includes travel to international tournaments to assess his/her athletes) The applicant s HP program trainees must include international level active BWF ranked athletes on track for the elite level events such as the Olympics and Youth Olympic Games At the time of expressing interest the coach must: - be a current USAB member in good standing (by good standing it means the applicant coach has no negative misconduct reports against him/her from the BWF or USAB, and/or any dues outstanding to the BWF or USAB) - have a current active background check on file - submit the assessment fee to USAB (note this fee does not include unstated expenses) - submit full coaching resume - have a sufficient knowledge of the English Language to interact with the assessors, for presentation and also document assignments Applicant is not U.S. citizen Applicant should contact the Director of Coaching & High Performance (DCHP) to express interest for Level 3 High Performance course. At the time of expression of interest the coach must: - be living in the U.S. - be certified by a BWF Member Association - have worked in national level badminton projects such as the Olympic, continental games, and international level high performance projects (note involvement must be detailed in resume) with a top badminton country (this is subject to approval by USAB) the last 4 years from the date of expression of interest to the DCHP - be a current USAB member in good standing ( good standing means that the applicant coach has no negative misconduct reports against him/her from the BWF or USAB, and/or any dues outstanding to the BWF or USAB) - be a current member in good standing with his association if the applicant has just arrived in the U.S. (good standing means the applicant coach has no negative misconduct reports against him/her from the BWF or his USA Badminton Coaching Development - Level 3 High Performance Course 2
3 association, and/or any dues outstanding to the BWF or his association) - have a current active background check on file with USAB and/or police clearance report from his country of origin and in all the countries where he/she was employed - submit the course and/or assessment fee to USAB - submit full coaching resume - have sufficient knowledge of the English Language to interact with the assessors, for presentation and also document assignments Other criteria - Must be current USAB member in good standing - Must have an approved current background check on file - Must have met the specific Level 3 High Performance application criteria - Must be medically fit to participate in physical activities during the course TERMS RELATED TO CERTIFICATION Below are terms related to coach certification in the USA Badminton context High performance athletes: High performance athletes are those athletes who: train and compete in U.S. Junior Nationals and U.S. Junior International Trials (JIT) to represent the U.S. train and compete in U.S. Adult Team Trials to represent the U.S. regularly to compete in Badminton World Federation (BWF) sanctioned junior and adult international Competitions so as to qualify for premier BWF events, the You Olympic Games, the Pan Am Games, and The Olympic Games Provisional High Performance Coach: A Provisional High Performance Coach is a current U.S. certified High Performance or Sport Performance Coach or a Foreign High Performance Coach who: has expressed interest to be certified as a Level 2, 3 or 4 High Performance Level Course, is currently working with high performance athletes, has assisted with U.S. junior international teams (for Pan Am Juniors & World Junior Championships), and has been assessed while working with U.S. junior international teams, has assisted with U.S. adult international teams (for Pan Am Championships, Thomas Cup, Uber Cup & the Sudirman Cup, has been assessed while working with U.S. adult international teams. Certified USA Badminton (USAB) Coach: A Certified USAB Coach is a coach who has undergone the necessary coaching development training, is a USAB member of good standing, has a current approved background check on file and completed the USOC approved Safe Sport Training. APPLICATION PROCESS To apply contact Mohan Subramaniam, USAB Director of Coaching & High Performance (DCHP) at mohan@usabadminton.org and/or mohansubra.usab@gmail.com Once application is approved, the applicant coach will be notified. The coach must confirm participation by paying the Level 3 HP course ( $750). The payment must be made payable to USA BADMINTON (Memo: Level 3HP Course). The check must be sent to: USA Badminton, One Olympic Plaza, Colorado Springs, CO (Attention: Mohan Subramaniam) The fees may also be paid using credit card. SUMMARY OF CERTIFICATION TASKS The following are the 19 certification tasks which are a part of the certification process that the coach must complete in 3 years. A brief summary has been written for each task. Once the coach application has been approved, the DCHP shall set up a time to brief the applicant on each task. The DCHP reserves the right to waive and/or amend the USA Badminton Coaching Development - Level 3 High Performance Course 3
4 certification tasks based on the verification of the applicant coach s current competency as reflected in the application pack. Task # 1: Coach s High Performance Program & Player Background The coach is required to provide the background information regarding his/her high performance programs. He/she has to select a singles player, or a doubles or mixed doubles pair as case study for his/her certification tasks. Task # 2: Coaching Process This assignment will reflect the coach s views on coaching and the coaching process in relation to working with a high performance player/players: (1) the role of coach, (2) the skills required, (3) the role of tactics and decision training in high performance badminton players Task # 3: Planning The coach shall write a Quad Plan (4 years) and a detailed one year plan for one (1) or two (2) players. Task # 4: Conditioning The coach shall assess the status of the case study player/players aerobic fitness, endurance, strength and agility through evidence based on tests protocols. The coach must design detailed programs to develop aerobic fitness, agility, endurance and strength for your case the study player/players. Task # 5: Player Performance Assessment The coach will assess his/her case study player/players competition plans for the last 4 years, and also prepare a detailed review of the player/players weakness, strengths and intervention plans, as well as their preferred learning styles. Task # 6: Match Analysis & Problem Solving The coach will be required to analyze matches, identify issues and provide solutions for (1) singles match in semifinals/finals of a Super Series, (2) doubles/mixed doubles match in semi-finals/finals of a Super Series, (3) singles, doubles and/or mixed doubles match in a recent major competition involving his/her case study player/players. Task # 7: Coach Mentoring The coach must select a mentor. The mentor may be any coach/person of their choice who is approved by the DCHP whom they feel comfortable with. The mentor must be someone who will be able to speak freely on the coach s training, approach, etc so that they will become more effective as a coach. As part of the coach assessment, the coach must provide a written report. The Mentor-Coach relationship must not contain a conflict of interest element (example: employer, employee). Task # 8: Coach Shadowing The coach must select 4 different coaches approved by the DCHP (including at a regular training session, camp, or main event). In this way, the candidate coach will be able to experience a range of coaching styles in different scenarios. The candidate coach will then reflect and submit a report as part of the assessment. Task # 9: Video & Self Reflection The coach is required to have himself/herself videoed while coaching a training session/sessions. The coach will be required to review the sessions reflecting on what went well and suggest strategies on how to improve their coaching. Task # 10: Create a Professional Development Plan The coach must submit a professional development plan outlining his/her key areas (strengths, weakness) and development plans for the next 3 years. This may include attending conferences and/or other courses or take up an USA Badminton Coaching Development - Level 3 High Performance Course 4
5 internship with the national team of another country. Task # 11: 360 Degree Coach Review The coach must organize a survey for the his/her players (Elite Juniors and/or Elite Adults), high performance coaches (mixture of Level 1 4 HPC), non-family individuals involved with high performance player, (example physical trainer, psychologist)fellow coaches and officials from outside the country. He/she must gather feedback in a very objective manner and document the feedback to be presented as an assessment task. Task # 12: Coach Presentations The coach will be required to present 3 different topics at 3 coach workshops (based on availability of opportunities). This workshops may be arranged by the DCHP and/or by the coach himself/herself. The presentations will have to be documented and presented as part of the coach s assessment. Task # 13: Hot Seat Interview The coach will be required to undergo an interview with an assessment team lead by the DCHP that may include experts who may come from badminton, coach education, management and sports science background. The coach will be questioned on a broad range of topics related to coaching, sports science and high performance training as well as competition. This interview may be done on a face to face basis and/or may involve both a video as well as face to face. Task # 14: Leadership Self Evaluation The coach will evaluate himself/herself: (1) his/her coaching style and its impact on his/her player/players. (2) selfcontrol and communication style at training and onsite at the competition venue and during matches. (3) boundaries with his/her player/players; (4) Conflict of interest situations; (5) Respect for player/players welfare. The coach is required to explain his/her strategy to manage and improve in future situations. Task # 15: Coaching USA Badminton Teams & Managing Camps The coach shall take positions with the USAB coaching staff in an adult and junior international team event as selected by HPAG. The coach shall also manage and/or assist in an adult and/or junior camp. The coach will complete all assignment tasks assigned by the DCHP and/or the USAB coaching staff in charge. Task # 16: Readings The coach will be given topics for reading and research. The coach must provide a summary of each topic. Task # 17: Psychology The coach will identify the needs of his/her case study player/players that affects their performance. The coach may consult an expert and/or devise a psychological program to address the issue/issues. The coach must document all assessments and improvement. He/she must also include copies of his/her program and relevant observations. Task # 18: Coaching Log Coaches must maintain a coach s log that will contain training information for all sessions, remarks on training exercises and player performance during training as well as reflections on their sessions. The log should be well planned for instance, into blocks preparation, main competition, etc. At the end of the practicum this log and/or a specific part of the log may be requested by the DCHP as part of the assessment. Task # 19: Completion of All USAB Level 3 HP Coach Modules Completion of all additional Level 3 HPC Course related modules and Continuing Education Units as requested by the DCHP. This may include other complimentary courses that may contribute to the coach s effectiveness as a coach. USA Badminton Coaching Development - Level 3 High Performance Course 5
