Year 10 Work Experience 2018 Parent IAG Hardenhuish School A High Performing Academy Mrs Vicky Brenton, Careers and Transition Manager Mrs Emma Dennien, Careers and Work Experience Administrator
What is the purpose of work experience? Gain an understanding of careers Link their learning to industry Develop employability skills Provide evidence of interests and skills for personal statement or CV
Benefits of Work Experience in Year 10 A chance to experience working in an adult environment. Learn about the difference between the challenges, rules and expectations of the workplace and those of school. Help with study pathway choices next year. Experience an occupation of interest, to either confirm or dismiss it!
Work Experience Week The last full week of this school year: Monday 16 Thursday 19 July 2018 Debrief Day Friday 20 July 2018
Work Experience Process Guide Identify a placement Identify a work placement of interest to you If you are unsure of what you would like to do ask Mrs Dennien to organise a meeting with careers advisor well in advance of your placement. Make contact with the company and ask if the company would be able to offer Work Experience Forms Once the Employer has agreed to your placement they must complete a Work Placement Form (available from the Careers Office in E Centre, Mrs Loft or the School Website) The form must then be signed by yourself and a parent/guardian Form Deadline s Hand the completed form in by: 26 January 2018 Out of Area (OOA) Placements: Any placement more than 60 miles from SN14 6RJ 19 February 2018 Any placement more than 20 miles from SN14 6RJ 18 April 2018 All Placement Forms Health & Safety checks Once the form has been received, your placement will be Health and safety approved, this may take several weeks. When the placement has been approved, Mrs Dennien will send you an to your school address and your parents to confirm. Attendance Ideally 3 weeks before you are due to attend your placement call the employer to reintroduce yourself and to finalise any arrangements such as working hours and uniform. Placements will start on Monday 16 July until Thursday 19 July If you cannot attend your placement for any reason the school and employer must be informed by 8:30am on that day. All students are required to attend the De-Brief Day on Friday 20 July 2018.
Identifying a Placement Students should start by thinking about the type of placement they would like and then research different companies this takes time Students need to pick something they think they will enjoy we want it to be a positive experience! Placements do not need to be what they want to do as a future career. To get the best placements start this process early. Make contact with the company to ask if they can offer work experience.
Restrictions Students cannot complete their placement in a school should be a new experience Placements abroad are not permitted All placements must have Employer s Liability and Public Liability insurances
Previous Placements
Check company websites for their work experience process
Difficult to arrange placements... Media (newspapers, TV and radio very reluctant) Roles where there might be an issue with confidentiality of customer/patient/client Very popular: Theatre/Drama, Vets, Hospitals However.we have had some success RUH & GWH Army Egg Theatre Swindon 105.5
Work Placement Form Additional copies available from tutors, the Careers office, Mrs Loft or the school website Must be completed by student, parent/guardian and employer forms will not be accepted with missing signatures Please ensure the employer has emergency contact details and any specific learning or medical requirements prior to the start of the placement
Form Deadlines Hand completed form to Mrs Dennien by: 26/1/2018 Out of Area Placements: Any placements more than 60 miles from SN14 6RJ 19/2/2018 Any placement more than 20 miles from SN14 6RJ 18/4/2018 All Placement Forms
Health & Safety Process We then arrange for the placement to be health and safety approved. This can take several weeks. The placement is not confirmed until a confirmation is received by the student and parent from Mrs Dennien. Where the placement is considered high risk, preplacement safety visits are carried out by Swindon Training. Placements incur a mileage cost of 50p per mile if they are more than 20 miles from SN14 6RJ Mrs Dennien will contact parents if this applies.
Insurance Work Experience pupils have the same status as employees. Employer s Liability Policy and Public Liability Insurance covers pupils for the length of placement. Cover: Injury to pupils or others; damage to or loss of employer s or pupil s property at the place of work. It does not extend to negligence or transport to the work place.
Before & During the Placement Student should make contact with employer ideally 3 weeks before placement to ensure they know: Where to go and who to meet Uniform or clothing requirements Working hours and lunch arrangements The employer and school should be contacted by the student if they are sick and unable to attend their placement by 8:30am on each day of absence. Students & employers will be either visited or contacted by tutors or school staff during the placement.
What next? Work experience was officially launched to students in assembly today This will be followed by tutor sessions about organising WEX Looking at skills and qualities to match careers Contacting employers Action planning Hopefully students have been discussing their ideas with you already!
Support There is support available throughout the week from the Careers and WEX Office (E centre) and a lunchtime drop-in every Thursday in C3 (from 30 th Nov) we can give contacts Pupils should discuss their WEX planning with their tutor during one to one mentoring Please direct any questions at anytime during the process to: Emma Dennien EXD@hardenhuish.wilts.sch.uk Vicky Brenton VJB@hardenhuish.wilts.sch.uk
Competition time! What deadlines.? ASAP = Pizza First tutor group to 80% =
Careers Fair Wednesday 22nd November Peter Thompson Hall Come along after school Lots of local businesses and employers - ask them about WEX opportunities
Student and Employer Feedback Last year s students very much enjoyed their Work Experience placement and regarded it as a valuable and worthwhile experience. Our students have an excellent reputation within the local business community - great feedback. As a school, we value the intangible benefits gained through this element of our careers education programme.
To Conclude Great opportunity! Please encourage students to challenge themselves while seeking a placement. Students need to be working on finding placements now as it really cannot be left until the last minute. Seek help if needed.
