1 POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: Peer Academic Coach CATEGORY: Classified FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt GRADE: C JOB SUMMARY: The Peer Academic Coach (PAC) is an integral part in the Early Alert Program. PACs are responsible for improving the retention and academic success of First- Time-in-College (FTIC) students. Peer coaches will be assigned to a cohort of FTIC students. They will be trained to identify barriers to academic success; guide and support students through their first academic year; identify and implement successful study skills and strategies. PACs will help students in their adjustment to campus life; introduce students to academic support services; and build relationships with each student using academic coaching techniques. Program Description: The Early Alert Program provides FTIC students with academic and other support services to increase their ability to adjust and remain in college through program completion. This program provides case management, proactive advising, academic coaching, educational activities and student tracking that will allow for an early and effective intervention. The primary goal is to increase the percentage of FTIC students who successfully complete a degree or certificate and are able to enter the workforce or transfer to a four-year institution. The Early Alert Program utilizes open communication, integration, and cooperation between academic departments and other support services at EPCC. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Provide individualized support by working one-on-one with fellow students, build relationships with their peers; coach students in their classes; accompany students to their classes and work closely with academic advisors; provide a supplemental coaching component and assist students with time management and study skills. 2. Assist peers in developing strategies for taking notes in class, preparing for tests, and getting the most out of studying. 3. Assist in the design and facilitation of academic success workshops and training programs. YEARLY PERCENT OF TIME 25% 25% 15% 4. 2 SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: One (1) year or 30 credit hours. EPERIENCE: One (1) year related experience. SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Skills/Abilities: Computer literate; familiar with Microsoft Office Software; Effective skills in interpersonal relations and communication skills including tact and diplomacy; Basic knowledge in campus programs and services; Basic knowledge of relationship building, time management, study skills, and test taking; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; Effective organizational and planning skills with attention to detail and followthrough; Effective writing and grammar skills; Ability to convey an outgoing, friendly demeanor to represent the College in a positive manner and to build confidence in others; Ability to work assigned work hours to include evenings and weekends; Ability to work in a diverse environment and be sensitive to issues of diversity and inclusion. 2. Equipment Used: Personal computer and a variety of equipment associated with a general office environment. 3. Software Used: A variety of word processing, spreadsheet database, , and presentation software in addition to Microsoft Office.
