The organization is learning to employ service design methods to help design and align services, spaces, and collections to the needs and aspirations of our customers and our community. We anticipate that we will begin capital fundraising for branch renovation projects beginning in The Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications will play a key role in positioning the Library and telling our story to the community, developing and implementing strategic marketing and communications plans and activities that foster public awareness of the Library's value and our meaningful contributions to the health and vitality of the City. About the Position The Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications heads up the Library's Marketing and Communications Department, leading all marketing, communications, and external relations activity for The City Library including library communications, media relations, employee communications, government relations, and community engagement. The Assistant Director serves on the Library's eight-member Executive Leadership Team, providing high-level, strategic leadership of the entire organization, helping to create and guide systemwide strategy to advance the Library s mission. Primary Responsibilities Serves on the Library's eight-member Executive Leadership Team, providing high-level, strategic leadership of the entire organization, helping to create and guide systemwide strategies and budgets to advance the Library s mission. Develops short- and long-term strategic marketing and communications plans for the Library and oversees implementation. Leads all marketing, communications, and external relations activity for The City Library including Library communications, media relations, employee communications, government relations, and community engagement. Develops and oversees execution of media strategy across all media, including press, social media, web, broadcast, and print publications. Ensures effective management, mentoring, and supervision of departmental staff. Recommends appropriate staffing levels and duties, ensuring that staff are effectively aligned with departmental work. Directly supervises assigned employees. Encourages creativity and healthy discussions among staff to arrive at innovative, practical, and elegant approaches and solutions. Develops, implements, and monitors systems and procedures necessary to ensure smooth operations of the marketing, communications, and public relations functions. Develops and manages processes for branch libraries to create and/or request promotional materials or signage that balance quality, centralized branding, and flexibility for branch staff. 3 Responsible for editorial direction, design, production, and distribution of all organizational publications, coordinating all organizational print and electronic materials and images such as letterhead, use of logo, brochures, banners, and graphics across Library system. Develops and reviews internal and external correspondence for employees and external stakeholders keeping them informed of Library news. Directs the preparation of key Library publications including Annual Reports, weekly e-newsletter, and other publications as required. Assists Executive Director with written material and interactive presentations for public speaking engagements or article publications. Conducts relevant market research, monitors trends, and analyzes and regularly reports on the impact and effectiveness of marketing and communications activities. Acts as Library spokesperson. Responsible for crisis communications. Supports and promotes the Library s mission and Strategic Roadmap and communicates system-wide goals and measures. Collaborates with the Assistant Director of Customer Experience in the collection and sharing of positive stories of customer satisfaction and transformation. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor s Degree in communications, marketing, or other closely-related field; five to seven years of progressively responsible marketing related experience, and two years of supervisory or management experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Proven knowledge and experience in conducting marketing research. Demonstrated leadership qualities, including experience with mentoring and guiding staff to ensure people and teams are effectively using their time to deliver and improve services. Skilled at creating a healthy and positive work environment where open communication and a collaborative "yes, and" spirit thrive. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills; skill with group and team dynamics, and the ability to motivate and negotiate with diverse individuals and groups. Experience in project management, including planning and evaluation, managing a budget, scheduling and monitoring, coordinating multiple projects, and project communications. Must be able to use technology to plan, communicate, deploy, and evaluate multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to assess, recommend, and implement improved policies, processes, and procedures relating to area of responsibility. Ability to use data in making decisions. 4 Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff, other managers, community members, and the public. If travel is required for library purposes, must have transportation. If using personal vehicle, must maintain state-required insurance. Preferred Qualifications Experience with fundraising campaigns. Experience with website content management. Knowledge and experience with Adobe Creative Suite. Experience with public library operations, programs, and services. A growth mindset, curiosity, and an orientation towards experimentation and learning. Knowledge of service design or design thinking tools and methodologies and a systems-thinking approach. Experience and skill in data analysis and outcome-based assessment. Spanish language and/or other non-english language skills. Working Environment Work is performed in an office environment Normal stress related to working in a busy, public institution. Schedule Full-time, 40 hours per week. Typically business hours Monday Friday, 9 am to 6 pm. Evenings and weekends may be required.
