RAC plant and equipment may include: commercial air conditioning plant found in multi-story buildings; commercial refrigeration equipment similar to that found in a supermarket; domestic refrigerators; heat/energy recovery units; industrial single or multi-staged refrigeration and air conditioning systems; or temperature and environmental control equipment in the food processing industry. This qualification will typically be achieved in a workplace environment whilst completing a New Zealand Apprenticeship. Outcome Statement Graduate profile Graduates of this qualification will be able to: - Apply engineering trade skills and knowledge to plan, troubleshoot, recondition, and test when maintaining and servicing a range of RAC plant and equipment - Apply engineering trade skills and knowledge to plan, install, and test a range of RAC equipment in accordance with industry and statutory standards - Commission basic installations and work with specialists in the commissioning of the full range of complex plant and equipment - Apply an understanding of the principles of RAC system design and applications to all aspects of their work - Recover refrigerant into a cylinder and charge refrigeration Qualification Reference 2366 Page 1 of 6
2 systems in accordance with current regulations - Apply knowledge of the use and management of refrigerants in the RAC industry to safely meet all relevant environmental and industrial legislation - Carry out the electrical work associated with the installation, maintenance, servicing and commissioning of refrigeration plant and equipment - Apply an understanding of the relevant Health and Safety legislation and workplace safety culture in order to work safely and meet responsibilities in a commercial environment - Recognise the limits of their ability and the importance of working with integrity and maintaining currency. Education pathway Employment pathway This qualification can lead to the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering [Ref ], and other relevant New Zealand Certificates in Mechanical Engineering. It may also lead to legislated requirements such as the WorkSafe Approved Handlers Certificate. Achievement of this qualification marks the successful completion of a New Zealand Apprenticeship in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. Graduates will be equipped to work as tradespeople and capable of specialising in a dedicated sector of the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning industry. Examples of these sectors include Refrigerated Containers, Domestic Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Transport Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Commercial and Industrial Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. Qualification specifications Qualification award This qualification can be awarded by an organisation which has an approved programme of study or industry training programme leading to the qualification. The certificate will display the logo of the NZQF and may display the name and/or logo of the awarding body. Evidence requirements for managing consistency All TEOs either arranging training or delivering programmes that lead to the award of the qualification are required to participate in a consistency process scheduled by NZQA. This will involve reviewing evidence associated with graduate s achievement of outcomes, and agreeing acceptable thresholds for qualification outcome achievement and areas for improvement. To demonstrate how graduates are achieving the qualification graduate profile outcomes, TEOs are required to produce their own evidence in a high level report. Evidence will include the following: Employer surveys to determine if graduates of the Qualification Reference 2366 Page 2 of 6
3 qualification meet the graduate profile outcomes. Evidence of effective processes to ensure programmes continue to meet current industry needs. A range of workplace evidence demonstrating that graduates meet the graduate profile outcomes. Any other relevant evidence as appropriate. Credit transfer and recognition of prior learning arrangements Minimum standard of achievement and standards for grade endorsements Entry requirements (including prerequisites to meet regulatory body or legislative requirements) Organisations that offer programmes towards the qualification are expected to have Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment processes in place. Credit transfer will be automatic where assessment standards are used for assessment within programmes of study or training leading to this qualification. Candidates must achieve all outcomes and hold both a WorkSafe Approved Filler Test Certificate and an Electrical Workers Registration Board s Electrical Service Technician (EST) Practising Licence to be awarded this qualification. There are no grade endorsements for this qualification. Entry is open, however it is recommended candidates hold the National Certificate in Educational Achievement (Level 2) [Ref: 0973]. It is expected that fundamental health and safety awareness will be a focus at the start of the programme, and further embedded in all onjob and off-job learning throughout the duration of the programme. Optional Transition information Replacement information This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (Level 4) [Ref 0130]. The last date for entry into the replaced qualification is 31 December The last date for assessment against the replaced qualification is 31 December It is anticipated that no existing candidates will be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements. However, anyone who feels that they have been disadvantaged may appeal to Competenz at the Qualification Reference 2366 Page 5 of 6
