General Summary of Function/Purpose of Position As a senior level Heavy Equipment Mechanic, position serves as a lead worker overseeing the work of lower level mechanics, laborers and trades helpers and assists with scheduling, assigning and inspection of work, and participates in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and equipment. This position may serve as a mobile mechanic with lead worker responsibilities in coordination with other mobile mechanics. This position will also be a first responder for emergencies.

The total percentage of all duties performed must equal 100 percent. Duty 1 General Summary: Percentage: 40 Assist and participate in repairing vehicles. Function as the technical service advisor to Heavy Equipment Mechanics. Assist in the service, maintenance and repair of the department fleet of trucks and specialty motorized equipment under the guidance of the Heavy Equipment Supervisor. Perform all duties of a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. Provide technical support to other heavy equipment mechanics. Assist Heavy Equipment Supervisor in identifying areas where technical training is needed as equipment technology advances. Maintain fluency in diagnostic software. Duty 2 General Summary: Percentage: 30 Schedule repairs, coordination and planning with customers, parts specialist and mechanics. Schedule repairs with assistance and input from supervisor and parts inventory specialist and the other lead worker. Assist parts inventory specialist in acquisition of parts needed for scheduled repairs and new equipment set up. Work with outside vendors on repair and maintenance of MDOT equipment. Monitor costs, quality of repairs and preventative maintenance procedures. Process payment for invoices from outside repair vendors. Obtain estimates and assist in obtaining purchase orders for outside repairs, as needed. Monitor preventative maintenance needs, compliance and maintain scheduling utilizing the M-5 Fleet Program. Monitor and track the roving equipment schedule and coordinate service work with other Heavy Equipment Mechanics. Duty 3 General Summary: Percentage: 15 Inspect and road test equipment. Maintain records and reports. Assist in the inspection, testing and preparation of newly purchased equipment prior to assignment to users. Monitor and maintain compliance with equipment manufacturers warranty and recalls. Road test new and older equipment to evaluate condition. Maintain records, including data entry into M-5 Fleet Maintenance Management software and prepare performance and safety reports as conditions required. Provide technical assistance and guidance to maintenance garages and other internal customers. Dispatch mobile mechanics per garage needs and requests. Duty 4 General Summary: Percentage: 10 Garage and equipment inspections as required. Assist in the inspection of the condition of shop and mobile mechanic tools and equipment and recommend purchase replacements when necessary. Prepare cost and materials estimates. Ensure MIOSHA and environmental site inspections are performed as required with guidance from supervisor. Monitor shop and personnel for safety compliance, including use of PPE. Monitor facility condition and needed repairs or maintenance and assist supervisor to complete facility maintenance work requests and capital improvements. Miscellaneous duties as needed by supervisor. Duty 5

3 General Summary: Percentage: 5 Monitor location and maintenance needs of region shared equipment. Monitor location and schedule of region "shared equipment" utilizing transfer reports and Qualcomm GPS System. Monitor preventative maintenance and repair needs using M-5 and Service Tracker. Monitor condition and availability of "shared equipment". 16. Describe the types of decisions made independently in this position and tell who or what is affected by those decisions. The decision to rebuild rather than replace a part requires independent judgment. Scheduling of repairs and maintenance of equipment, both in-house and outsourced. 17. Exposure to motor exhaust and noise, solvent odors and brake lining asbestos fibers. Exposure to moving machinery and equipment. Ability to drive a variety of cars, pickups, truck, and heavy equipment. Also, must be able to climb and crawl over and under all types of equipment. Lifting heavy items up to 100 pounds. 4 Serve as lead worker to assist the supervisor in scheduling, servicing, maintaining and repairing heavy equipment. Whenever possible identify, recommend and implement improvements in work methods and materials utilized in the position. 24. This facility is responsible for maintenance and repair of a fleet of 1,000+ vehicles and equipment in the Southwest Region. Also, dispatching and replacement of equipment. In this position the lead worker is responsible for assisting repair and scheduling of equipment. 26. What are the minimum education and experience qualifications needed to perform the essential functions of this position. EDUCATIO: High School diploma or equivalent desired. A.A.S. Degree or certificate of completion of Automotive or Heavy Duty Truck technology desirable. EXPERIECE: Heavy Equipment Mechanic 11 Five years of experience assisting skilled trades people in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment, including one year equivalent to a Heavy Equipment Mechanic E10. Alternate Education and Experience Heavy Equipment Mechanic 9-11 Possession of an associate s degree in Heavy Duty Truck/Heavy Equipment Repair may be substituted for two years of experience assisting skilled trades people in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment. KOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AD ABILITIES: Proficiency with computers, software, computer diagnostic software essential. Ability to provide training and explain instructions and guidelines to others effectively. Ability to organize and coordinate the work of the unit. Ability to determine work priorities and assign work to employees. CERTIFICATES, LICESES, REGISTRATIOS: *Heavy Equipment Mechanic 9- A CDL group A with or X endorsement and no air brake restriction must be obtained within six months from date of appointment. *Heavy Equipment Mechanic E10- Requires Possession of the Commercial Driver's license (CDL) group A with or X endorsement and no Air Brake restrictions issued by Secretary of State. *Preferred, Michigan Mechanic Master Heavy Duty Truck Repair license.
