3 B. Hypomer FX-2451F Perfomance Hypomer FX-2451F is a high performance, low hydroxyl content, super fast drying acrylic resin designed for 2K PU metallic and colored paints. It yields superior RCA resistance, good solvent resistance, adhesion and anti-scratch performance. It can be combined with other high solids or high OH content resins to obtain a balance of performance properties. Ever since its introduction, Hypomer FX 2451F has found success in many plastic coatings for 3C products, such as smartphones and laptops. Besides, Hypomer FX-2451F shows excellent adhesion on various plastic substrates even after exposure to high temperature and high humidity. 3

4 Resins and Additives for Plastic Coating Thermoplastic Acrylic Resin Hypomer AC-7435 has excellent compatibility with various CAB resins and good alcohol solubility. It is suitable for metallic paints due to its fast-drying properties and good aluminum pigment orientation. Hypomer AC-7435 is recommended for coatings for HIPS and PS substrates. The figure 3 shows the appearance of metallic paints containing Hypomer AC-7435 and Hypomer AC-7450, respectively, after 60 hot water dipping for 24 hrs. Hypomer AC-7435 Hypomer AC-7450 Fig. 3 Rheological Wax Dispersion Improvement of effect pigments orientation( aluminium, mica and pearlescent pigments ) M-P-A E106A and DeuRheo 556F are supplied in paste form, therefore can be easily incorporated into coating formulations. They improve the orientation of effect pigments (such as aluminum, mica and pearlescent pigments) when used in combination with CAB (cellulose acetate butyrate). They also improve workability of the spraying process, gloss, brightness and enhance the flip flop effect of metallic pigments (see Fig. 4). In addition, M-P-A E106A and DeuRheo 556F provide excellent anti-settling property, especially after dilution at application viscosity. With the use of these additives, other anti-settling agents are generally not required in formulations. 5 Adhesion Promoters Adhesion promoters for PP substrates are commonly used in automobiles, household appliances and toy industries. They are an effective mean to replace the expensive and environmentally unfriendly chemical oxidation or electrochemical surface treatment techniques. Adherent PPB and Adherent AP-13 are CPO-based adhesion promoters that are added into primers and topcoats for PP and PP/EPDM substrates. They are also used as fresh primers by diluting in benzene-based organic solvents e.g. toluene and xylene and spraying directly onto PP substrates. (see Fig. 6) DAPRO ACP-16W is an acrylic-modified chlorinated polyolefin dispersion in water. It is free of APEO and VOC and provides excellent adhesion on various plastic substrates such as polypropylene (PP) and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO). DAPRO ACP-16W can be used as a sole vehicle resin or combined with other resins. It is mainly used in clear coats or colored coats for automotives as well as in adhesives and inks. 5

7 Rheological Additives Metallic pigments usually have large particle size (~11-15 µm), high density (~2.7 g/cm 3 ) and low oil absorption. In the absence of anti-settling additives, they tend to settle and become hard settlements at the bottom of container upon storage. Although the settling rate can be reduced by using high viscosity resins, the improvement is generally limited. An effective way to overcome this problem is to add an anti-settling agent into the paint. DeuRheo 211 (a polyethylene wax) forms an entangled network that minimizes the settling and hard cake formation of aluminum pigments in coatings. It does not impact the flow and leveling property of coatings. For applications that require viscosity and thixotropy build, polyamide-type anti-settling waxes such as DeuRheo 219 and THIXATROL P240X are highly recommended. Very often the combination of polyethylene and polyamide waxes results in synergistic effect by further reducing settling of the pigments, even at the application viscosities. In this respect, the combination of DeuRheo 211 and DueRheo 219 (or THIXATROL P240X) has found use in many automotive and plastic coatings applications. 8 Resins and Additives for Plastic Coating Flow & Leveling and Mar & Slip Agents Film defects such as orange peels, pin-holes, crater, and fish-eyes usually occur, under high temperature and high humidity conditions. Silicone-based levelling additives have been widely used to solve these defects since these are very effective in lowering surface tensions of coatings. Despite this, combinations of silicone-base and polyacrylate leveling agents are sometimes found to produce the best overall results in many industrial applications. Levelol 835 (polyacrylate) and Levelol 837 (fluorocarbon-modified polyacrylate) are particularly useful in this kind of application. Levelol 835 has excellent compatibility with acrylic polyol resins. In general, compatibility of the additive should be evaluated before addition in resins containing medium and high hydroxyl contents. Silicone-based leveling agents such as Levaslip 432, Levaslip 876 and Levaslip 879 improve the substrate wetting, slip property and scratch resistance. Levaslip 432 also improves the orientation of metallic pigments and silica matting agents. Levaslip 876 has wide resins compatibility and increases leveling and slip properties. Levaslip 879 gives lower foaming and is highly effective in improving leveling and slip properties at low dosage levels.
