Yu can use IBM Ratinal Asset Manager t reuse assets acrss an rganizatin. Fllw these guidelines t set up a new envirnment in which t deply Ratinal Asset Manager. The deplyment prcess can include the fllwing steps: Identifying yur business bjectives. Fr example, yu might have these bjectives: Measure reuse savings Imprve the reuse f assets thrugh cultural changes Share knwledge and reusable assets thrugh cllabratin Identifying the infrmatin mdel, including the cmmunities, asset types, and asset attributes, needed t reach yur business bjectives Creating a design and deplying it t a small grup that is fcused n the business gals Finalizing the design by having the small grup prve its utility Mentring peple t use the design Creating centers f excellence t rll ut the prduct and cnfigure it t meet changing requirements Deplyment invlves three related tasks: designing the slutin, cnfirming its technical requirements, and cmmunicating with stakehlders abut the slutin and requirements. Design the slutin Deply the capabilities Yu can deply Ratinal Asset Manager in an rganizatin by intrducing it t cmmunities in increments. Yu can als incrementally integrate with ther tls. As part f the adptin planning prcess, the increments are assigned a date, after which the capability in that increment is implemented and available. In the fllwing example increments, a deplyment team wrks with an rganizatin that is adpting Ratinal Asset Manager. First, they wrk tgether t develp the initial structure fr a cmmunity. The deplyment team lads the first assets fr the cmmunity and leads sessins t teach cmmunity members t use the tl. In these sessins, the leadership transitins frm the deplyment team t the persnnel f the rganizatin, wh eventually take wnership f cmmunicating Ratinal Asset Manager usage and updates within their wn cmmunities. The implementatin begins as a small deplyment t a grup f advcates in the Develpment cmmunity. The members f that cmmunity then evaluate the initial setup. Nt all f the Develpment cmmunity might participate. By starting small, gaining sme initial success, and then iteratively expanding the deplyment, the team minimizes risks and ensures that the tl can enable a successful reuse initiative. The iteratins f the first increment might fcus n deplying t cmmunities in a priritized rder. The cmmunities that will realize the mst benefits are deplyed t first: 1. Develpment and Quality Assurance cmmunities 2. Architects and Analysts cmmunities 3. Management cmmunity (Prject and Iteratin managers) Increments f deplyment Increment 1. With the advcates frm the Develper and Quality Assurance cmmunities, cmplete these tasks: Create the initial metadata

Lad the first assets Establish gvernance Mentr the cmmunity leaders s that they can guide their cmmunities thrugh the deplyment Create a knwledge base abut the applicatin r prduct Create an Ask the Expert capability Increment 2. With the advcates frm the ther cmmunities, cmplete these tasks: Create the initial metadata Lad the first assets Establish gvernance Mentr the cmmunity leaders s that they can guide their cmmunities thrugh the deplyment Create a knwledge base abut the applicatin r prduct Create an Ask the Expert capability Increment 3 Wrk with the cmmunity advcates and an Expert t integrate reuse activities and deliverables in yur business r develpment prcesses. With the Expert, use Ratinal Asset Manager t stre asset templates and reusable assets fr yur prcesses and Web site With the cmmunity advcates, integrate gvernance with a business r develpment prcess Mentr the cmmunity leaders s that they can use the new prcess with Ratinal Asset Manager and guide their cmmunities thrugh the deplyment Extend Ratinal Asset Manager t stre the new assets in an applicatin r prduct knwledge base Extend the Ask the Expert capability Increment 4 Integrate a change management tl with Ratinal Asset Manager Integrate a requirements management tl with Ratinal Asset Manager Integrate a test management tl with Ratinal Asset Manager Deplyment activities T implement a reuse prgram by using Ratinal Asset Manager, an rganizatin might cmplete the fllwing sample set f activities. In these examples, the rganizatin is called the Develpment Center. Activity Participants Descriptin Cmpletin Criteria Deply Ratinal Asset Manager t the Develpment Center Assciates Develpment Center Reuse Advcate team Develpment Center team leads IBM Ratinal Asset Manager cnsultant Deply Ratinal Asset Manager t the Develpment Center Assciates s that they can begin a reuse initiative: This activity will be cmplete when the reuse prgram is integrated and Ratinal Asset Manager is delivered in the Develpment Center Release 2.0 implementatin.

Activity Participants Descriptin Cmpletin Criteria Manage the prcess f submitting reusable assets Manage the cllabratin prcess assciated with asset reuse Implement asset reuse and begin tracking reuse metrics Integrate Ratinal Asset Manager repsitry capabilities and reuse prgram int an existing business r develpment prcess Establish a cmmittee t lead asset reuse Institute a plicy t gvern asset reuse Develpment Center line leads Develpment Center executive spnsrs IBM Ratinal Asset Manager cnsultant Develpment Center line leads Develpment Center advcates IBM Ratinal Asset Manager cnsultant Implement an Ask The Experts capability Develpment Center line leads and executive spnsrs will establish an Asset Review cmmittee. The cmmittee prvides perating prcedures fr management f the peratin f asset reuse and Ratinal Asset Manager acrss the Develpment Center. The Develpment Center line leads and advcates will develp an asset reuse gvernance plicy fr Ratinal Asset Manager. This plicy prvides gvernance and entitlement fr asset in individual cmmunities. The gvernance plicy cvers asset typing, required asset attributes, categrizatin, and asset review plicies. This activity will be cmplete when the Asset Reuse cmmittee is frmalized and the asset reuse gvernance plicy is in use in the Develpment Center. This activity will be cnsidered cmplete when a gvernance plicy is develped fr the Ratinal Asset Manager prductin envirnment.

Activity Participants Descriptin Cmpletin Criteria This activity includes the fllwing tasks: Create a charter fr the cmmittee that describes its purpse and perating prcedures Develp gvernance plicies fr Ratinal Asset Manager Dcument the gvernance plicies Enable review prcesses fr assets T transitin knwledge and wnership thrughut the increments, fcus the capabilities iteratively, as shwn in the Capability matrix. Iteratins 2-1 thrugh 2-3 will be part f the Develpment Center 3.0 implementatin. Deply the infrastructure Design the infrastructure that supprts the deplyment in phases. Fr example, the first implementatin f Ratinal Asset Manager might run in a Linux n System z test server. The secnd phase, which supprts the prductin deplyment f Ratinal Asset Manager in Develpment Center 2.0, might be n a VMware Linux platfrm. Advcates: The implementatin is supprted n a test server fr the first deplyment f candidates fr reusable assets. Pst-Advcates: Prductin systems with adequate disaster recvery and develpment and test envirnments are deplyed n newly prvisined hardware that supprts the sftware develpment envirnment. Mentr thers t deply the capabilities and infrastructure T ensure the widespread adptin f Ratinal Asset Manager, mentr a grup f clients t use the tl s that they can mentr thers in their rganizatin. This apprach has the fllwing gals: Establish a standard and repeatable prcess. This type f prcess is hard t establish withut mentring. Facilitate tl usage by fcusing n a small team t be the early adpter. It is mre efficient and cst effective t wrk with teams n actual prjects than in a classrm. Ease the difficulty in applying cncepts t a prject. With mentring, prject members can wrk directly n their prjects. Prvide greater flexibility. Instead f having a fixed number f classes that must be scheduled, mentrs can wrk with practitiners n an as-needed basis in a rle- and Develpment Centerspecific manner. Mentrs cmplete three main activities: Establish an initial implementatin Mentr a grup f clients Assist mentrs t mentr, (that is, train the trainer). Mentrs must be resurces f lng-term guidance abut the tl, and must train thers t cmplete these activities: Cnfigure the tl Cnfigure cmmunities Mentring can als help thers link thery and practical applicatin. The intent is t train the members f the rganizatin wh will administer r gvern a cmmunity, r will guide all cmmunities in the use f Ratinal Asset Manager. T ensure that peple can use Ratinal Asset Manager t reach their business gals, allcate resurces t mentring effrts. Withut a slid mentring apprach, the adptin f the tl might be less efficient and effective. Determine the criteria fr success When the capabilities are prperly demnstrated, the deplyment is successful. Make sure that all the stakehlders agree abut the criteria fr success. Fr example, the criteria fr success might be as fllws: Success criteria Repsitry administratrs can cmplete these tasks: Cnfigure LDAP usage with Ratinal Asset Manager Prvide installatin supprt

Cmmunity administratrs can cmplete these tasks: Define asset types Create asset attributes Create categry schemas Specify apprpriate asset gvernance Users can cmplete these tasks: Search, review, and dwnlad cmmunity assets Submit an asset Cnfirm the technical requirements List the assumptins, dependencies, and prerequisites List the assumptins abut, dependencies f, and prerequisites fr deplyment.
