Job description Job title: Contract: Innovation Manager Permanent The Health Foundation The Health Foundation is an independent charity committed to bringing about better health and health care for people in the UK. Our aim is a healthier population, supported by high quality health care that can be equitably accessed. From giving grants to those working at the front line to carrying out research and policy analysis, we shine a light on how to make successful change happen. We use what we know works on the ground to inform effective policymaking and vice versa. We believe good health and health care are key to a flourishing society. Through sharing what we learn, collaborating with others and building people s skills and knowledge, we aim to make a difference and contribute to a healthier population. Purpose The Innovation Manager is a new role within the Improvement Directorate and will work closely with the Associate Director, Improvement Programmes to develop and lead the Health Foundation s work supporting innovation and innovators in health and healthcare in the UK. This will include developing a programme of work to support and catalyse innovation and innovators working to improve health outcomes in the UK. Central to the role will be working with existing stakeholders, alongside developing new relationships outside the Foundation s traditional stakeholder group, to understand the context of innovation in healthcare in the UK, keeping abreast of new developments and emergent ideas in the sector. Leading the implementation of a practical delivery plan will be a key responsibility of this role and will involve working closely with innovators working at the front line. The post holder will also play an important role in gathering and synthesising learning from our innovation work and in its communication internally and externally, through written outputs, event design, and other channels. Detailed responsibilities of the role: Contribute to the ongoing development of the organisation s innovation strategy and develop expertise in innovation to support work across the Health Foundation Work closely with the Associate Director, Improvement Programmes to provide intellectual contribution to the ongoing development of the Health Foundation s strategy to further support and catalyse innovation in health and healthcare. Keep abreast of new developments and emerging ideas in the field through horizon scanning and building strong relationships with stakeholders in order to have a good understanding of the broader context of innovation in the UK (both within the NHS but also in the wider health and social care sector). As well as building external relationships the post holder will be expected to work with colleagues within the Improvement Directorate to capture existing knowledge and identify the most interesting innovations from our own portfolio. Develop strong relationships and synergies with the work of other Health Foundation teams, such as Economics, Research and Data Analytics (as well as within the Improvement Directorate), helping to identify connections across different portfolios of work Work directly with innovators and front line teams to support innovation including through design of funding programmes and ongoing management Support the Associate Director in the development of a practical programme of work to support innovation and innovators in healthcare in the UK. This will include supporting scoping, design and delivery and engaging directly with front line teams throughout the process. Work closely with the appropriate Programme Manager and Programme Officer to develop and execute programme management plans that support this programme of work this may include award and selection processes, ongoing management of awards (including mechanisms of reporting) and organising and attending events. Coach and support organisations and frontline teams that we are working with, providing them with strategic advice and support to enable them to reach their full potential. Build effective stakeholder relationships Build strong, productive relationships with stakeholders in the health and care sector, the broader health system and directly with innovators at the frontline. Develop relationships with organisations working in the health innovation sector with the goal of identifying potential partnerships and synergies in approach which would support greater impact and presence. Work with appropriate stakeholders in the wider health system to help translate the Health Foundation s work on innovation into practical actions that achieve impact at scale. Build and communicate the Foundation s knowledge and expertise in innovation Represent the Health Foundation externally and ensure that projects and wider system learning are communicated effectively. Working closely with the Communications team and the Insight and Analysis Unit, contribute to developing and implementing communication strategies for the Improvement Directorate across a range of channels (for example social media) in order to disseminate our work and build engagement and excitement within the wider health community.

As an expert in innovation, the post holder will act as a central point of knowledge and expertise for others teams helping to build capability and awareness across the organisation Support the Associate Director to deliver new ways of engaging stakeholders in our work for example the design and delivery of innovation focused events General Work with the Associate Director, Improvement Programmes, Head of Programmes and Programme Managers as appropriate to continually improve processes and delivery mechanisms. Deputise internally and externally as required Participate in broader Health Foundation activities, meetings and groups relevant to the role (for example Improvement Directorate meetings, Programme Managers meetings, and fortnightly all staff meetings). In all aspects of their work the Innovation Manager will be expected to work in close collaboration with other members of the Improvement team and more widely within the Health Foundation as appropriate. Regular UK travel may be required (site visits, stakeholder meetings etc). In addition, occasional international travel may be required (for example to attend relevant conferences).

Person Specification We are looking for a candidate with a proven track record in understanding, identifying and supporting innovation. We are particularly looking for a candidate who can quickly establish strong relationships with a broad range of people. You will be experienced in the health and care sector, or have highly relevant experience from closely aligned fields. Above all, you will have the ability to identify and support innovations to achieve impact, and combine a passion for improving public outcomes with a practical focus that leads to action. In particular this includes: Knowledge and Experience 1. Demonstrable understanding of innovation methods and tools and how they can be applied to the health sector. 2. Sufficient academic and management experience to be credible with a wide range of often highly educated stakeholders in the field of innovation and improving quality, recognising this is a complex and often contested field. 3. Knowledge and practical understanding of health and healthcare across the NHS, social care and public health; and/or the ability to learn quickly and apply experience from closely related areas 4. Successful track record of supporting the design and implementation of innovation or improvement programmes; for example, experience of complex service redesign programmes in health and care. 5. Demonstrable understanding of the challenges/opportunities around spreading and scaling innovations in healthcare with an ability to translate what this might mean for programme design and delivery 6. Demonstrable understanding of a range of different research methods and experience of generating and interpreting evidence of impact. 7. Educated to Masters level or equivalent experience (desirable) Skills and Abilities 1.
