We ve achieved more than 2.4 million visits and the gallery has been a catalyst for the regeneration of Margate. Located in a building designed by David Chipperfield Architects, on a site overlooking the North Sea, our programme of world-class events, exhibitions of historical and contemporary art and our innovative learning programme have fast earned the gallery an international reputation. With free admission, great art is accessible for all. We are committed to challenging traditional practice to make ourselves more accessible; repositioning art as more relevant to society. Our distinctive, audience-focused approach is integral to our success and inspires interest from our peers, nationally and internationally. Turner Contemporary is a charity governed by a Board of Trustees, chaired by Clive Stevens. The organisation receives some revenue funding from Arts Council England and Kent County Council and the whole team works creatively to raise additional income. However, in order to deliver our ambitious vision, we need to secure additional annual fundraising targets of in excess of 500k from a range of sources including trusts and foundations, corporate sponsors, patrons and high net worth individuals. In 2015, we secured an Endowment Fund which is managed externally. After six successful years of operation, Turner Contemporary is working with stakeholders to develop an exciting capital scheme to move the gallery on to the next stage of our development. We will be hosting the Turner Prize in 2019.
Purpose of Job/Key objectives Working as part of the Strategic Leadership Team (SLT), you will be responsible for generating all fundraised income by maximising our development activities and ensuring that the work of Turner Contemporary is promoted through a range of communications and PR activities. You will lead a small team and will need to have a successful track record of fundraising including bid writing, working with high net-worth individuals, trusts and foundations, and relationship management. Whilst experience of marketing and communications is desirable, the core purpose of this role is fundraising. Principal Duties/Tasks and responsibilities Fundraising Develop and implement a fundraising strategy to achieve the annual fundraising targets of c 500k Lead, co-ordinate and manage all fundraising activities across Turner Contemporary to include trust, corporate, major donor, individual giving, legacy and digital fundraising as well as increasing our Endowment Investment Support any capital fundraising campaigns Take responsibility for the cycle of Trust relationships including research, cultivation, applications, stewardship and reporting with the support of the Director, where appropriate Identify and implement new ways of increasing income through a range of fundraising initiatives Attend networking/cultivation events and meetings with potential donors Prepare progress reports and give presentations on fundraising to the SLT and Board of Trustees Ensure our fundraising, data and communications are within statutory and voluntary regulations following best practice Communications Lead and oversee the work of the Marketing Manager and Marketing and Press Assistant to ensure that their strategy is implemented Oversee the team to develop enhanced fund raising messaging and ensure it is present across all channels Oversee the development of Turner Contemporary s brand reputation through the PR and marketing communications strategy General Work closely with the Director and other heads of department as appropriate to identify opportunities for specific fundraising (e.g. temporary exhibitions, educational projects, staff costs) Be an active member of the Turner Contemporary Strategic Leadership Team to deliver the Business Plan and agree organisational budgets Work with the Director and Trustees to ensure strong donor stewardship strategies are implemented
Work with Trustees to identify potential donors from their own networks Undertake high profile advocacy and representation on behalf of Turner Contemporary, fostering close relationships with existing and potential supporters Develop external partnerships Work with colleagues across the organisation to ensure that an understanding of fundraising and the importance of excellent donor stewardship underpins Turner Contemporary s work Undertake any other duties as reasonably required Carry out duties in accordance with Turner Contemporary s Equal Opportunities, Access, Employment, Health and Safety and Inclusion Policies A certain level of flexibility regarding availability outside normal working hours is required to attend events, meetings and private views NB this job description is provided to assist the post holder to know their principal duties. Person Specification Essential Educated to degree level Demonstrate a track record of at least five years of successful fundraising to include major donor fundraising and writing successful grant applications Ability to combine strategic thinking with attention to detail Experience of managing donor/client stewardship to an excellent standard Experience of working with senior charity volunteers (e.g. trustees, governors, members of a fundraising council) Experience of charity fundraising best practice and legal requirements Experience of staff management Experience of working effectively with a broad range of staff across Desirable Knowledge and interest in the visual arts Fundraising qualifications and/or evidence of training Experience of capital fundraising Experience of working on Communications strategy Knowledge of digital marketing
