8 Outline of steps planned to overcome challenges and gaps Update and harmonize national laws and regulations with international standards. Strengthen the national food safety coordination mechanisms. Promotion provision of laboratory support services. Training of personnel and trainers in food safety aspects. Establishment of monitoring and surveillance system (Diseases- Contamination). Increase/ raise awareness on food safety (workshops, training). Engage of private sector. 8
9 Prioritized overview of any external assistance required to overcome challenges or fill gaps Technical and financial support to establish national food borne diseases surveillance system. Technical and financial support to establish national food contaminants system. Technical support on updating the existing food safety regulations to harmonized with international ones. Support to conduct surveys on food contaminants, mainly pesticide residues, veterinary drug residues, heavy metals etc. Upgrade the existing laboratories to meet food safety challenges such as GMO, growth promoters, food supplement and food additives. Conduct training on risk analysis ( including risk based inspection). Provision of equipments for laboratories as well as field test kits. Training on Risk Analysis (risk assessment, risk management & risk communication. Training on imported and exported food inspection and certification. Training of Trainers (TOT) on various fields relevant to food safety. Increase/ raise awareness on food safety (workshops, training). 9
10 A recent study located on Khartoum city had been done on vended foods. Khartoum city represents an active area with a very high population, the study covered most of the sellers in Khartoum and the effect or impact on the labor and economical power. An analytical example for an improvement view has been described as the following. 10
11 Strengths Well qualified staff Good coordination with other responsible of food safety. The organization is focal point for Codex, so well informed with other safety management systems. Weaknesses Shortage of tools and means to distribute the Know how about safety management systems. Laws and regulations is scattered with other organizations Laws and regulations about food safety needs updating. Opportunities The Unit is a focal point of other international organizations that enable them to the implementation and knowledge about the food safety programs and enables for good strength of food safety programs. Threats Shortage in participation in international meetings and workshops about food safety led to less benefit from gaining and sharing experience.
