2 Group Limagrain an international farming community TABLE OF CONTENTS The parent company of Limagrain Cereal Seeds, Group Limagrain, was founded as a farmer s cooperative in France in 1965 to improve the quality and availability of seed supplies. Today, still farmer-owned, the company has nearly 9,000 employees, and is the largest seed company in the European Union and the largest cereal seed producer in the world. Group Limagrain has strategically placed cereal breeding programs in every area of the world where wheat and barley are widely grown. Through the exchange of elite Group Limagrain germplasm across six continents, LCS gives U.S. farmers access to the best genetics available globally. Through cuttingedge speed breeding methodologies, we bring new, improved varieties to market in a fraction of the time possible just a decade ago. LCS has more than 75 distinct varieties in the marketplace representing all major market classes of wheat and barley and we are constantly researching, breeding, testing and releasing new varieties to meet the needs of our growers. 3 MEET OUR TEAM FIND OUR SEEDS Hi, I m Drew Hendricker, LCS Sales Manager for the Central Plains. We hope you find our new 2016 guide helpful as you make planting decisions this year. Dr. Barnett and her team continue to advance new and better options for Central Plains growers helping to further diversify an already strong LCS product lineup, with a proven track record of success on the farm. Because of this, we are sure to have a wheat variety that will maximize the potential of your wheat acres this season. As the manager of our LCS lineup and dealer network across the Central Plains, it s a privilege to work with the best in the industry- all of you. Please let me know if you have any questions about our LCS genetics. Drew Hendricker, Regional Sales Manager Contact: (970) / drew.hendricker@limagrain.com Dr. Marla Barnett, Senior Wheat Breeder Marla breeds hard winter wheat for the Central and Southern Great Plains. She obtained her Ph.D. from Kansas State in 2006 and welcomed the chance to return to the Great Plains in 2010 with LCS. Marla s research career has focused on wheat improvement, genetic resistance to insects and pathogens, and producing accurate genotypic data. Brent Conrady, Research Associate Brent manages aspects of performance trial planting and harvest operations, along with agronomy trials for both wheat and canola. Brent grew up on a dryland wheat farm in northern Oklahoma and spent 10 years as a certified crop advisor before joining LCS. Dean Wilson, Research Associate Dean assists Marla in breeding wheat for the Central Plains. He targets the accumulation and analysis of data for yield and disease resistance. Prior to joining LCS, Dean assisted the late Dr. Jim Wilson of Trio Research. Dr. Jim Peterson, Vice President for Research Jim currently oversees all U.S. breeding operations. Prior to joining LCS, Jim spent 27 years in public sector wheat research, including 12 years as a professor of Wheat Breeding and Genetics at Oregon State University. Jim also served as Chair of the National Wheat Improvement Committee. Frank Curtis, Chief Operating Officer Frank is our Chief Operating Officer and has worked for Group Limagrain for the past 35 years. Frank moved to the United States in 2010 to launch our company. Frank s roles within the Group have included plant breeding, field research, product development, senior management, seed sales and marketing. Limagrain Cereal Seeds is owned by farmers, powered by nature and driven by innovation. Our dedicated team of researchers combine the advantages of modern technology with the traditional principles of sustainable agriculture to develop varieties that today s growers will need tomorrow. 4 BREEDING STRATEGY REGIONAL TESTING Adaptation zones for hard winter wheat within the Great Plains can be attributed to variations in elevation, temperature and rainfall. Four major agro-ecological adaptation zones can be drawn within the region. These zones are fluid, changing annually in size and scope, and may overlap. Growers of the Central Plains need, and deserve, the best genetics possible on their farms. Mother Nature challenges your wheat crop each year with extreme heat, cold, drought, and increasingly virulent diseases and insects. LCS brings together superior genetics from its global programs using the newest biotechnologies, combined with end-use qualities that meet the demands of our highly critical export markets. Our breeding strategy comes from our strengths: Fort Benton Dickinson Germplasm. Group Limagrain has wheat breeding programs in South America, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and the Czech Republic. Varieties from some of these programs contribute to our strong and diverse germplasm base, bringing new genes, very high yield potential and novel disease resistances. LCS combines these with local germplasms, selected for superior regional performance, to create an exciting genetic base for the future. Technologies. Access to a state-of-the-art molecular marker laboratory, doubled-haploid factory, rapid growth facility and end-use quality lab means that LCS can bring the best varieties to market faster than ever before in nearly half the time compared to conventional breeding. Experience. LCS breeders have more than 100 years of combined experience in the art and sciences of wheat breeding. Collaborations. Our strong commitment to public-private partnerships sets LCS apart from the competition, bringing together the strengths of both worlds. We have created innovative collaborations with more than 25 different universities across the United States that broaden our collective impact and bring new genetics and traits to market faster, with better supporting information. Global Perspectives. Group Limagrain s global investments in wheat continue, including establishing new breeding programs in Argentina and Brazil, and most recently, the creation of Limagrain Cereals Research Canada (LCRC), which will greatly increase our germplasm base and program strength in the United States. This global perspective, global mandate, and access to global technologies and germplasm means we can bring higher productivity and novel genetics to local growers. 14 Hard Wheat Quality Mixograph Additional Quality Parameters Loaf Volume Loaf volume is considered to be the best overall predictor of hard wheat end-use quality. Varieties capable of producing higher volume bread loaves are in high demand from the milling and baking industries of the United States and abroad. A mixograph is used in the LCS quality lab to determine the quality and quantity of flour proteins on the mixing quality of potential new hard wheat releases. Mixing tolerance and dough handling properties can be predicted with only 10 grams of flour, giving a quick estimate of a variety s gluten profile. Excellent HRWW Quality Average HRWW Quality Poor HRWW Quality Seed Size/Flour Yield The correlation between seed size and the amount of usable flour millers are able to recover is a key factor in deciding to release a new variety. Pictured from left to right are plump, medium and thin sized seeds. Crumb Structure Crumb structure helps determine the consistency of wheat quality. High quality wheat varieties produce an elongated, lacy and layered cell structure, while varieties with poor quality produce a more rounded, dense and heavy cell structure. Excellent Crumb Poor Crumb T158 LCS Compass LCS Mint Good HRWW Quality Very Good HRWW Quality Excellent HRWW Quality Kernel Hardness Determining variation in grain hardness of experimental hard wheat varieties is important because it is linked to the end-use quality. Kernel characteristics such as hardness are important to know before the milling process so tempering can be done properly
