US Department of Interior Southeast Climate Science Center Damian Shea, Principal Investigator NC State University Southeast Climate Science Center 14 February 2012 SE CSC Science Planning Meeting St. Petersburg, FL
DOI Regional Climate Science Centers 8 Centers Nationwide Science-based Competitive process to determine host location Multiple LCCs per CSC with overlap Coordination across boundaries is critical Host institutions (PIs) are key to coordination Ongoing and increasing collaborations in research, education, and outreach among hosts
NCSU as Host of the SE CSC NCSU earned the honor of hosting the SE CSC through a very competitive process In past 5 years, NCSU had $96 million in funding for climate change research, education and outreach Long and extensive experiencing hosting similar federal centers (DOI, USDA, DOD, etc.) Strong experience and reputation in climate modeling, ecosystem response to stressors, connection to human wellbeing, translation to practical management strategies Experience throughout the southeast US (incl. islands) and extrapolating/forecasting across boundaries Our goal is to be responsive to the SE CSC Science Plan and DOI needs
NCSU Provides Infrastructure to SE CSC Operating funds for the center Access to NCSU resources Computing (cloud, ORNL supercomputing, HPC, etc.) GIS and statistical / modeling core facilities Over 1000 faculty, students, staff working on climate related research Offices and field equipment/sites Federal scientists will be adjunct faculty at NCSU Facilitate partnering throughout the region with current/new partners and collaborators including the other CSC host institutions and PIs
NCSU s Role as Educator 12 or more graduate students supported Post-doctoral fellowships partially supported Access to over 500 current graduate students and 50 post-docs in climate change related areas Physical, ecological, cultural, and management areas New Undergraduate minor in climate science New PSM Master Degree (Climate Change & Society) Summer workshops and web-based training Public outreach and engagement, citizen science Website:
Science in and for Society Develop and link downscaled climate models to ecological and cultural-resource response models creating derivative products to help guide and implement adaptive management Regional scale climate modeling and forecasting Population, community, ecosystem level response models Cultural resource vulnerabilities and impacts Spatial and temporal scales that help managers develop effective regional adaptive management strategies Assistance with translation to more local scales Uncertainty Analysis quantify and reduce uncertainty with models, a quantitative (probabilistic) risk assessment approach Fully integrate our activities with USGS and other partners, focusing on USGS Water and Coastal & Marine Science Centers
Climate Change Adaptation Conceptual Model Agencies, tribes, NGOs, & private landowners NCSU is the host, DOI is our client Planning, analysis, and decision-making Adaptation needs met: changes in policy, management, etc. Development of analytic and decisionmaking tools LCCs Syntheses and assessments Monitoring and data collection Science and model development CSCs From Doug Beard, NCCWSC
Connecting Climate Change to Resource Management Global Climate Models Describe likely climate changes at a very large scale Produced by agencies, universities, and research centers Local / Regional Climate Information Describe likely climate changes at a regional or local scale. Downscaled from global models or produced from regional models. Ecological Understanding Describe basic ecological processes (hydrology, population biology, ecosystem functions, processes, and services) Forecasts of Ecological Response Describe likely effects on fish, wildlife, ecosystems Use regional and local projections of climate change Major focus of National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center Adaptive Management Conservation actions designed to react to changing circumstances Identified by Landscape Conservation Cooperatives and other resource managers From Robin O Malley, NCCWSC Monitoring and Feedback Identify effective actions, inform mid-course corrections A fundamental component of effective planning and management
Southeast Climate Science Center North Carolina State University Damian Shea, Lead Investigator (Administration, Facilitation, Connection) Co-investigators from six colleges at NCSU: Ryan Boyles, State Climatologist and Director, State Climate Office of NC Robert Dunn, Associate Professor of Biology David Eggleston, Professor of Marine Science and Director of CMAST Scott Fitzpatrick, Associate Professor of Anthropology Nick Haddad, Professor of Biology James Gilliam, Professor of Biology Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf, Professor College of Veterinary Medicine Christopher Moorman, Professor, Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences Program Margery Overton, Professor of Civil Engineering Daniel Robison, Associate Dean for Research, College of Natural Resources Fredrick Semazzi, Professor of MEAS and Mathematics Michael Stoskopf, Professor of Wildlife and Aquatic Health, CVM

Southeast Climate Science Center: Status NCSU selected as host institution September 2010 Draft Science and Operational Plan June 2011 Jerry McMahon, SECSC Federal Director July 2011 Co-op Agreement funds 6 graduate students plus 6 matching (this year, 11+11), partial support for 2 Post-docs, and center infrastructure, but does not fund research or other major activities Expect to host 5-6 federal scientists Hiring three new faculty in quantitative disease ecology, aquatic biodiversity, evolutionary ecology Website:
Our Vision NCSU scientists have very successful basic and applied research programs with substantial funding. We want to leverage our resources to make a dramatic and lasting impact on how we manage and adapt to global change. This requires partnering, coordination, and integration with resource managers and LCCs so that our science is first informed by management needs/objectives and then we translate our research and knowledge to meet those needs. Will we only have small, tactical, incremental advances in responding to this change or do we strive to lead a bolder and more transformational effort, using CSC resources as the missing link between science and management?
