1 NEPAL FLOOD-2017 SITUATION REPORT Rural Reconstruction Nepal, Situation Report No. 1 (18 Aug 2017) and next SitRep will come by 25 th Aug 1. Situation Overview People in Terai are currently living in a terrible situation created by the torrential monsoon rainfall since 10th of August The incessant rainfall has triggered a massive scale of flooding and landslides in 21 districts in Terai belt, where more than 80% of its agricultural land and approximately 35,000 houses have been inundated and 11.5 million people have been affected. Essential services, such as road transportation, communication and electricity supply have been disrupted and cut-off in many parts of districts. So far, 128 deaths, 25 injury and 33 missing cases have been recorded and the number may go up as information is still being updated. According to data released from Ministry of Agricultural Development, 8.11 billion worth of loss to agriculture sectors as standing crops, food grains and fisheries are damaged. Similarly Parliament's Agriculture and Water Resources Committee revealed the data on damage of irrigation amounts to Rs billion as 135 projects including 15 major irrigation system have been damaged. In order to respond this massive disaster, RRN has formed a 'Flood Response Coordinating Team' to coordinate all response efforts effectively. The team is responsible for identifying the actual needs on the ground, mobilizing resources to support flood affected people in coordination with government mechanisms including National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) under Ministry of Home Affairs, District Disaster Relief Committee (DDRCs), Local Governments and other humanitarian organizations. Therefore, it may vary in the days to come. 2

3 3. RRN Flood Response Update RRN flood response covered currently 9 Terai districts and preparing additional 4 more districts, altogether 12 severally affected districts. RRN has mobilized its resources worth of Rs. 105K (caror) - for relief support to flood-affected people at the 1 st phase. In 9 Central and Eastern Terai districts, namely Sunsari, Saptari, Siraha, Sarlahi, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Rautahat, Bara and Parsa through the Community Development Programme (CDP 90K) and the rest from the other sources including RRN internal. In addition, RRN also decided to provide relief support to Morang, Jhapa, and Banke districts by mobilizing its other resources (Details will be published in the next Situation Report). RRN has been distributing immediate relief materials both food-items and non-food items as per the demand of the community received through respective DDRCs in 9 Terai districts and planning to distribute 3 more additional districts altogether 12. However, report of relief distribution yet to be received from all districts accept following three districts. As of 18 November 2017, the update on relief distribution has been received as follows: Funding: A sever funding gap has been observed and RRN is appealing for the funding.
