1 CGIAR GENDER AND AGRICULTURE RESEARCH NETWORK Gender, Breeding and Genomics Workshop October 18-21, 2016 Nairobi, Kenya PROGRAM Workshop Goal and Objectives The goal of the workshop is to increase the relevance and benefits of plant and animal breeding to poor rural women producers in low-income countries, especially Africa. To this end, the workshop is designed to produce a synthesis of past success and promising novel approaches for incorporating gender considerations into the development of improved crop varieties and animal breeds. The workshop aims to stimulate active cross-fertilization of ideas from different breeding, genomics and social science perspectives and experiences to produce some clearly expressed ideas that constitute must-have features of gender-responsive plant or animal breeding. Design principles Promote inter-disciplinary dialogue and understanding through a variety of workshop methods and dialogic approaches Create space for self-motivated learning discussions and exploration in appropriate balance with expert inputs Progress clearly towards a synthesized output in line with the above aims Core Questions for the Workshop: 1. What are the must-have features of gender-responsive plant or animal breeding? 2. How and when can genomic tools help a breeding program that aims to be gender responsive? 3. How and when can social sciences help a breeding program that aims to be gender responsive? When can social analysis make a difference in the breeding cycle and why? What kinds of social information can be useful for breeders in gender- responsive breeding and why? 4. What are the different ways breeders can obtain a reliable flow of information about different preferences of men and women end users? 5. What can women and men farmers (and others?) contribute, how and when in the breeding cycle?
