9 ALL-ISLAND JAMAICA CANE FARMERS ASSOCIATION Extension Services Report for Month Ended: June 2016 Officer: Lenoria Fearon Area: Golden Grove Factory WEATHER- RAINFALL (mm) Location Dec-16 Jan-16 Feb-16 Mar- May- Apr Jun-16 Duckenfield Spanish Wood Bowden Rains and the lack of cutting force continued to hamper the harvesting process as a result one farmer at PGR loss 100ton of canes (50t cut, 50 t standing) ; Pera-St. Thomas Farms loss 50tons of cane, cane cut but unable to load due to wet & saggy field conditions. FERTILIZATION & WEED CONTROL CANE CULTIVATION Growers continue to be reluctant in applying fertilizers as they complain that the prices obtained for their canes are too low, and they are unable to credit fertilizers due to fear of not being able to pay at second payment. Grower/Area Ha. Fertilized todate. Estate- Bercyn Farms Farmers 132 Total ha added for farmers for the month of June. Large Farmers Fred M Jones has not fertilized his hectares reaped to-date. Figures for Estate are yet to be produced by Estate Representatives, for June Weed Infestation continued to be a problem. All suppliers are affected especially due to the frequent rainfall which has hampered/ set back weed control programmes. The shortage of funds on the farmers side is also a major factor in the progress of weed controls on their farms. PLANTING Estate planting figures for June 2016 is yet to be supplied by Estate Representative. Small Farmers still awaiting funding from CEF to continue planting activities. Large farmer Fred M Jones application to the CEF for (re)planting loan was not approved.

11 ALL-ISLAND JAMAICA CANE FARMER S ASSOCIATION Extension Services Area: Long Pond (Everglades) Report for Month Ended: JUNE 2016 PLANTING PROGRAM Officer: Damion Dawkins Replanting is still at a standstill with no replanting taking place within the season although conditions are ideal. Still awaiting data. RAINFALL FOR JUNE 2016 CANES TO LONG POND Tons delivered to Long Pond for Month of June Average Delivery per day for the Month of June Farmers supply for month of June Farmers avg. delivery for month of June Estate supply for month of June Estate avg. delivery for month of June 21, Tons Tons 12, Tons 476 Tons/day 8, Tons 285 Tons/day CANES DELIVERD TO DATE (June 30, 2016) Tons delivered to date to Long Pond 21, Tons delivered to date to Worthy Park Tons Delivered to date for region 55, FIELD CONDITIONS Very little application of fertilizer and chemicals are currently been carried out for both farmers and estate, this brings about an aura of doom for the fields and on a broader scale the region on a whole. Farmers need to be informed in the shortest possible time of what is to become of the factory in order to have some amount of confidence in order to invest the their fields.

12 ILLICITLY BURNT CANES JUNE 2016 Both estate and farmers had illicit fires this month. Tonnes for farmers total 4,200. Some arrangements were made in order to have the illicitly burnt canes sent to the factory. All affected farmers experienced some amount of spoilage. 80% of the illicitly burnt cane made it to the factory. Summary of Illicit Fires Estate Farmers Total This Month (June) Hectares This Month Tonnes Cane This Month Number of Fires To-Date Hectares Tonnes Cane FACTORY The factory s performance is improving as time progresses, farmers have outperformed the estates on a daily basis in terms of daily deliveries. The farmers have consistently met their quotas while estate is lagging behind significantly. This will negatively affect the factory s throughput as well as the overall length of the crop period. LIMITATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Clarification needs to be given to all growers of canes especially to farmers as to the future of the factory in the shortest possible time since this information will affect the possibility of further expansion or decline within the region. Detailed explanation by Everglades Farms management of the assistance that they claim they will give to farmers. An increase in the number of cutters within the region is needed or as an industry we need to take a look at other options (mechanical where possible) for harvesting our fields. An agreement is needed between CFA and CEF to determine what will happen to farmers within the region who have loan (crop liens) but are without an operating factory to send their cane to in light of the only factory accepting cane from said region seem to be reaping in a selective manner and will not take all the canes from the region. Farmers S.I.A. and C.E.F. loan balances should be made know to farmers that the necessary checks and quarries can be made by the farmers. GPS needed to capture accurately farmers, areas in cane. Equipment is needed to assist with harvesting of canes within the area.
