10 Why using these tools and this process Why these tools? Trained to use the tools as part of project implementation (PRBM P, GWI & CCDP) 10 GWI CRiSTAL and CVCA being implemented across regions (Central America, East Africa, West Africa) initiated after a presentation by IUCN Tool user category As part of a project

11 Specific problem being addressed Tools were used in two contexts Climate proof existing project activities CRiSTAL was designed for this but not very successful as many activities are designed to be sustainable and have no budget for adjustments Identify adaptation actions CRiSTAL process useful with this approach as directly used the information collected from communities to identify priority actions that could increase resilience 11

12 Information required Regional and National climate conditions and predictions were useful Specifically when determining if an activity is sustainable with climate change Obtained from UNDP Climate Change Country profiles Livelihood, resource and climate context From communities Obtained through 3 hour assessment at community level with focus groups Local Government Authorities involved in interpretation 12

13 Lessons Learned Process is logical and the framework inspires confidence Tools can be adapted according to context Simultaneous training and application (learning by doing) is essential in ensuring proper understanding of how tools can be used Involvement of community members in analysis as well as data gathering provides more in-depth valuable knowledge Time for reflection is essential and feedback can strengthen applications of the tools Many recommendations have been integrated (i.e hazard mapping, recording access and control of resources) Adaptation actions identified are analyzed with planners from different sectors and incorporated into development planning (i.e. district development plans) 13

14 14 Challenges It is difficult to identify climate change impacts as distinct from other environmental trends Adaptation activities need to be sustainable with climate change and other impacts (i.e. land use change) Lack of user experience sharing across regions and organizations Facilitation is key to successful application needs to be a strong component in training CRiSTAL found some sheets are redundant (i.e. influence of hazard on resources), but have adjusted and tested changes Length of time to carry out data collection and analysis (3-5 days)
