Please call the Pesticide Education office if you have questions between 9:00am and 4:00pm (M-F) at (413) These workshops provide both licensed and certified applicators with current information regarding the safe and effective use of pesticides. Applicators can gain contact hours towards recertification in addition to a current understanding of pesticide issues and their responsibilities as pesticide applicators in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. How many contact hours do I have to obtain every three years? License Contact Hours Dealer s License 3 Applicator s License 6 Private Certification 12 *Commercial Certification 12 *Must receive 1 in each category. How do I prove that I attended these workshops? You will receive a Certificate of Attendance when you attend these workshops. You will need to send in these forms if you receive an audit letter from the Department of Agricultural Resources. I have a new employee. How do I sign up and prepare him/her for the pesticide exams? The Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) will send you an exam packet with all the relevant information by calling (617) Or by internet at agr/pesticides. In addition, the Pesticide Education program offers a two-day workshop to help prepare individuals for the exams. Description of Recertification Workshops Massachusetts Pesticide Laws and Regulations. Taryn LaScola, Director, Pesticide Program MDAR. Ms. LaScola will review the new requirements for direct supervision of users of restricted use pesticides. She will present different scenarios to illustrate regulatory violations and how to prevent them. This is an opportunity to ask questions that you have regarding the regulation of pesticides in Massachusetts. Sessions held in Chelmsford, Pittsfield & Plymouth Pesticide Applicator Safety: Personal Protective Equipment and SDS. Alfred Sorensen, University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Review of the proper use of personal protective equipment. Review of pertinent sections of pesticide labels and safety data sheets. Sessions held in Marlborough and Pittsfield. Natalia P. Clifton, UMass Extension United States Department of Agriculture cooperating. 2 Fungicides: Mode of Action and Resistance Management. Angela Madeiras, UMass Extension Plant Diagnostic Lab. This session will cover the major class of fungicides and modes of action. It is important to understand the mode of action in order to properly use these tools and prevent disease resistance. Sessions held in Chelmsford and Plymouth. Environmental Fate of Pesticides and Massachusetts groundwater regulations. Dr. Hotze Wijnja, Environmental Chemist, Pesticides Program MDAR. A discussion of the different factors that lead to movement of pesticides in the environment. Also, there will be a review of the MA groundwater protection regulations (333 CMR 12:00). Sessions held in Taunton and Hadley. Pesticide Exposure Studies. Natalia P. Clifton, UMass Extension, will discuss pesticide exposure studies and their impact on human health and the use of personal protective equipment. Sessions held Chelmsford, Plymouth, and Hadley. Special Topics for Pesticide Applicators. Natalia P. Clifton, UMass Extension, will discuss a variety of timely topics of importance to pesticides applicators. Sessions held in Marlborough and Taunton. Pesticide Respirator Fit Testing Train-the- Alfred Sorensen, University of Massachusetts-Amherst. All applicators who use pesticide products that require respirators must comply with the OSHA respirator requirements. Learn how to conduct a respirator fit test and to select and maintain your respirator. You can bring your own or use one of ours. Reminder: respirators should be fit tested every six months. Sessions held in Marlborough, Taunton and Hadley. EPA Worker Protection Standard (WPS) Update for Farmers (Part 1) Laurie Rocco, MDAR and Natalia Clifton, UMass Extension. This two-hour program reviews the EPA Worker Protection Standard. The discussion includes changes implemented over the next couple of years. Sessions held in Amherst, Westborough, Topsfield, East Wareham and Cape Cod. Dates and locations posted on our website EPA Worker Protection Standard (WPS) Train-the- Program for Farmers (Part 2). In order to comply with WPS, employers must provide annual training to farmworkers. Only certified pesticide applicators or EPA WPS s may train farmworkers. This program, when taking with Part 1 (above), satisfies the requirements for becoming an EPA WPS. This three-hour program includes an intensive review of the trainer requirements of EPA WPS. Farm employees, who are not certified, can become WPS trainers. They could now assist in the WPS training on the farm.. Special Accommodations: Contact the Pesticide Education office before you register for any of these workshops if you require any special (ADA) accommodations. Registration: You can use the enclosed registration form to register for all workshops when paying with a check or money order. Towns can also pay using a purchase order. If you would like to pay for these workshops, using a credit card, you can register online for an additional fee ranging from $5.02-$7.99 per person per day depending on how many workshops you select. You may register online at Please make every effort to send registration forms as soon as possible. There is limited seating for all workshops. Registration (using checks or cash) accepted at the door only if there is available seating. The registration fee at the door is an additional $10.00 for each applicator. 2

3 Refunds: There will be no refunds made in the event that an applicator cannot attend a particular workshop. Instead, (1) another applicator can take his/her place or (2) he/she can attend another workshop in this current series of workshops (provided that there is enough room). Cancellations: If a workshop is canceled, due to weather, call the meeting location or the Pesticide Education office. Every effort will be made to reschedule the workshop. Applicators who have pre-registered for the canceled meeting will be notified of the new date. Please Note: You must bring a positive proof of ID (photo ID) to attend these workshops. If you are more than 10 minutes late to a workshop you will receive less than. If you are 20 minutes late for a workshop you will not receive any contact hours but you can register for another available workshop this season.
