Brief Job Description: The job of a banana farmer involves cultivation of banana as per the package of practices recommended for a particular agronomic climate zone, type of soil, rainfall pattern and climatic conditions to achieve the banana yields as per the genetic potential of a given variety and sell the produce as per the competitive market prices without distress sale. Personal Attributes: The banana cultivating farmer should work independently, risk bearing, very laborious and must have the ability to make decisions pertaining to his/her area of work. Requires clarity, skill for basic arithematic and algebraic principles. The individual should be result oriented and is responsible for his own working and learning. It may also be defined as a distinct subset of the economy whose components share similar characteristics and interests. Sub-sector is derived from a further breakdown based on the characteristics and interests of its components Occupation is a set of job roles, which perform similar/related set of functions in an industry. Function is an activity necessary for achieving the key purpose of the sector, occupation, or area of work, which can be carried out by a person or a group of persons. Functions are identified through functional analysis and form the basis of OS. Job role defines a unique set of functions that together form a unique employment opportunity in an organization. OS specify the standards of performance an individual must achieve when carrying out a function in the workplace, together with the knowledge and understanding they need to meet that standard consistently. Occupational Standards are applicable both in the Indian and global contexts. Performance Criteria are statements that together specify the standard of performance required when carrying out a task. NOS are Occupational Standards which apply uniquely in the Indian context. Qualifications Pack Code is a unique reference code that identifies a qualifications pack. Qualifications Pack comprises the set of OS, together with the educational, training and other criteria required to perform a job role. A Qualifications Pack is assigned a unique qualification pack code. Unit Code is a unique identifier for an Occupational Standard, which is denoted by an N. Unit Title gives a clear overall statement about what the incumbent should be able to do. Description gives a short summary of the unit content. This would be helpful to anyone searching on a database to verify that this is the appropriate OS they are looking for. Knowledge and Understanding are statements which together specify the technical, generic, professional and organizational specific knowledge that an individual needs in order to perform to the required standard. Organizational Context includes the way the organization is structured and how it operates, including the extent of operative knowledge managers have of their relevant areas of responsibility. Technical Knowledge is the specific knowledge needed to accomplish specific designated responsibilities. Core Skills or Generic Skills are a group of skills that are key to learning and working in today's world. These skills are typically needed in any work environment. In the context of the OS, these include communication related skills that are applicable to most job roles. Vertical may exist within a sub-sector representing different domain areas or the client industries served by the industry 3

6 AGR/ N 0008 Planting Material Preparation in Banana Cultivation National Occupational Standard Unit Code AGR / N 0008 Unit Title (Task) Description Scope Planting Material Preparation in Banana Cultivation This OS is for a Banana grower who is responsible for identifying the appropriate planting material for banana cultivation and its treatment. This unit/task covers the following: Performance Criteria (PC) w.r.t. the Scope Element Identification of appropriate planting material Procurement of Planting Material Identification of appropriate planting material Procurement of planting material Treatment of planting material Health and Safety Precautions Performance Criteria To be competent, the individual on the job must be able to: PC.1 Identify the Agro-climatic zone in which cultivation is taken up PC.2 List the varieties that are suitable to the zone PC.3 Identify various vendors / suppliers (including government nurseries / department) of the planting material PC.4 Ascertain the quality of seedling and material from each source in terms of free from pests and diseases, survival rate etc. PC.5 Ascertain the prevailing market rates for the planting material PC.6 Procure the planting material PC.7 Identify an appropriate storage space (free of infestation and having congenial climatic conditions for the planting material) PC.8 Store the planting material (if there is time lag between procurement and planting) Treatment of planting material PC.9 Ascertain the prevalent pests and diseases of banana in a given Agro-climatic zone PC.10 Ascertain the appropriate pesticides available for Planting treatment PC.11 Treat the planting as per the dosage recommended by the State Agriculture University / Department or as prescribed by the pesticide manufacturer Health and Safety Precautions Knowledge and Understanding (K) A. This unit/task covers the following: Land Preparation and Ploughing Application of Nematicides and Fumigants Planting the banana suckers Performance Criteria To be competent, the individual on the job must be able to: PC.1 Clear the ground, cut up the existing planting material, stack them and burn them PC.2 Dig a ditch for wet soil that will carry away all the water as per the recommendation PC.3 Plough the soil deep, use rotavator to make soil fine as per the recommendation PC.4 Demarcate with white powder or by small sticks over the recommended spacing for plantation as per the soil type PC.5 Perform mulching by putting down of dry grass and leaves at the end of the rainy season plough the land for 4-6 times PC.6 Use wheat straw and banana straw as a mulch material for increasing the bunch weight and conservation of soil moisture PC.7 Use of plastic Mulch instead of trash mulch as per feasibility, requirement & recommendation PC.8 Allow the soil to weather for 2 weeks PC.9 Get the land levelled using blade harrows PC.10 Make furrows in the soil length wise and breadth wise PC.11 Dig pits at the intersection of rows and furrows PC.12 Select generic / specific nematicides to a given agro-climatic zone PC.13 Choose appropriate methods for applying nematicides and fumigants PC.14 Apply Nematicides and Fumigants PC.15 Use the tissue culture seedlings for plantation from defined source; select the healthy, disease free plants PC.16 Plant the suckers simultaneously with basal dose of fertilisers.
