2 EARA Board 2015 Our Articles of Association specify that the board must maintain a 50% profit and 50% non-profit membership. All members of EARA can vote at the General Assembly and stand for the Board. It is one vote per organisation, whether they be a University, a Publically Funded Research Institution, or a Global Pharmaceutical company. 4 Purpose of EARA Facilitate: the establishment of local animal research advocacy groups and networks in countries where they don t exist Maintain and improve: a high level of public acceptance of animal research for human and animal medical benefits, through a variety of communications means, and to increase awareness of work to produce alternatives to animal models Lead: pan-european Transport initiatives to counter pressure on the lab animals supply chain and the license to use laboratory animals in research Create: a favourable climate for research using laboratory animals in Europe, through influencing national and EU decision makers

5 Current Challenges To Animal Research in the EU (1) Policy -> European Citizens Initiative to Stop Vivisection (submitted March 2015) Possible revision of EU Directive 2010/63 on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes (2) Communications > Absence in many countries of an intelligent narrative to the public and decision makers on the benefits of animal research and progress in developing alternatives (3) Supply Chain-> Transport of Laboratory Animals, Running out of options, Air France, UK transport boycott (4) Scientific -> Growing challenge to Basic Science Research, AALAC v PETA accreditation; Dogs as second model in Toxicology studies. (5) Germany/Italy > Crisis countries with little public advocacy
