High application viscosities and high sag resistance immediately after mixing the resin and hardener for application purposes remain unchanged compared to standard systems. By using BYK-P 9912 the downtime of the mold is shortened and the application frequency of the external mold release is prolonged. This results in a higher process efficiency, output. Another important feature is the excellent surface quality directly after demolding and the no longer required power wash process prior to coating. The additive improves the wetting of glass and carbon fibers, which reduces air entrapment and porosity. The additive prevents non-wetted areas and reduces the scrap rates. Because of the high content of non-volatile matter, it is particularly suitable for closed processes. The epoxy-functional groups contained in the additive enable embedding into the matrix. The additive results in improved mechanical properties of the component through increased fiber-matrix bonding. The extent of the improvement depends on the choice of the glass fiber and epoxy resin system. However, it is not dependent on the age of the selected glass fiber. BYK-C 8001 can be added to either the hardener or the epoxy resin, although it should be added to the epoxy resin just before application. The additive can be stored in standard amine hardeners. The maximum storage time is affected by the hardener composition and the additive dosage. The additive is used in unsaturated polyester resins that will be subsequently processed with glass fibers into composite components. The additive is used wherever strength needs to be increased or the structural degree of freedom enhanced. BYK-C 8003 improves both the static and the dynamic resilience of the component through improved fiber-matrix bonding. The chemical composition of the additive enables bonding to the fibers and simultaneously to the resin matrix. This unique characteristic enables changes in the component design and the production of more resilient components. Another key benefit is a cost saving due to a targeted reduction in wall thickness whilst maintaining the necessary strength. The reactive additive is added just before the processing of the resin. It is suitable for vinyl ester, unsaturated polyester or styrene-free resins in combination with all glass fiber types of any age. BYK-C 8003 has no negative influence on the processing parameters of the resin system or compound. 5 New Combined Competencies of BYK & Addcomp Thermal Stabilization Almost every car brand in the world relies on Addcomp for stabilization combi-batches. Plastic exterior and interior parts have made major contributions to the automotive industry s efforts to reduce vehicle weight and thereby improve fuel economy. Automotive applications must meet strict requirements for impact strength, temperature stability, and UV resistance. Stabilization combi-batches from Addcomp are used to improve the properties of plastic parts in order to meet these stringent criteria. SCONA Modifiers Pushing Your Plastics Performance SCONA TPPP 9212 FA SCONA TPPP 9212 GA Coupling Agent for Carbon Fiber Polypropylene Compounds To meet the increasingly higher demands for lightweight solutions, for example, in the automotive industry, new material solutions have to be developed. A trend that stands out in this area is the use of carbon fibers in thermoplastic compounds. BYK has developed a novel coupling agent, SCONA TPPP 9212, that is particularly suited to improving the mechanical properties in polypropylene carbon fiber compounds. As a particular result of using the coupling agent, the E module, tensile strength and heat deflection temperature could be considerably improved. With the introduction of SCONA TPPP 9212, a new coupling agent with a high percentage of bound maleic anhydride is now available. The 1.8 % content of chemically bound maleic anhydride enables even more efficient bonding of the carbon fiber to the polypropylene matrix. This produces compounds with excellent mechanical properties even at low dosages. SCONA Modifiers SCONA TSPP GB Adhesion Promoter to Improve the Mechanical Properties of Polypropylene (PP) Filler, PP Glass Fiber, PP Carbon Fiber, and PP Natural Fiber Compounds as well as One-packs in Polypropylene Due to the extraordinary high MAH content and low viscosity the material is able to wet out the fiber surface in thermoplastic composites very efficient. This makes the product especially suitable for carbon fibers. But also for the use in classical glass fiber compounds with high loadings SCONA TSPPP GB shows its strength. SCONA Modifiers Like SCONA TPPP 9212, our new Polypropylene based Coupling Agent SCONA TSPP GB was developed for the use in thermoplastic light weight composites. Special features of this novel material are an outstanding high grafting level of 2,1 % MAH combined with an high flow ability, which makes the product especially suitable for composites with high fiber contents. 5

6 New Mixed Mineral for Thermoplastic Reinforcement Polypropylen is one of the most used plastics in automotive applications. One reason is for sure the low density of the PP. But very often the polypropylene is combined with fillers like talc to improve e.g. stiffness of the resulting compounds. This of course has a negative influence on the density of the compounds and the weight of the final parts. BYK has now developed a special functional filler based on our unique clay technology. These new mixed mineral shows already a low dosing level, a superior reinforcing effect compared to conventional talc fillers. The lower dosing level leads to a lower weight of the resulting parts compared to standard talc filled compounds. Another very important advantage of our new mixed mineral is the improved scratch resistance of the reinforced PP compounds. Not only the visibility of the scratches is very much reduced but also the scratch depth is much lower than with conventional solutions. They are one of the main components in the manufacture of glass fiber sizings. The polymers used are MAH-grafted polypropylene or polyethylene.
