2017 Precision Medicine Study
Enabling better health through information technology.
Precision Medicine Study Introduction DNA genetic testing companies such as Ancestry.com and 23andMe are becoming increasingly popular across the consumer market, offering limited but valuable insight into your DNA at a relatively low cost. Consumers can find out where they come from and details about their family history they may not have known before. While the hospital market has begun to leverage genomics, or precision medicine, at the point of care, the approach and processes from a delivery standpoint are significantly more complex than the consumer market. This study is a market snapshot of how U.S. healthcare organizations currently approach and plan to approach precision medicine from an IT perspective. While the interest level and potential expectations of precision medicine are extremely high, developing programs and conducting precision medicine at the point of care requires expertise, funds, and IT sophistication that many organizations currently do not have. That said, the study highlights that many organizations with established programs are looking to expand their offerings into different clinical areas while improving their IT approach with current in-house solutions and dedicated precision medicine platforms. Despite limited plans to conduct precision medicine in the future, the next two years of the adoption and development of precision medicine programs as well as IT solutions and infrastructure to address precision medicine needs will be significant. Nearly 70 percent of organizations with plans to conduct precision medicine intend to do so within the next 12 to 24 months. While many new entrants into the precision market will need to rely upon a smattering of IT solutions and 3rd party research help, advancements in these areas could rapidly change not only the IT landscape and research processes but the overall number of organizations looking to provide these services.
Study Demographics Methodological Approach: Web based survey Dates of Data Collection: April 26, 2017 to May 4, 2017 Target Audience(s): Biomedical roles, Medical Directors, Laboratory Directors Number of Respondents: 100 Organization Type SecondaryMethodological Approach: HIMSS Analytics LOGIC Dates of Data Collection: April 30, 2017 Target Audience(s): U.S. Hospitals Number of Respondents: 5,460 Organization Size Integrated delivery network 3% Specialty Hospital 2% Academic Medical Center 10% Other 8% Multi-hospital health system 38% Greater than 500 beds 23% Less than 50 beds 24% beds 19% beds 7% Stand-alone hospital 39% beds 27% N=100 N= HIMSS Analytics
Precision Medicine Adoption For the purposes of this study, precision medicine is being defined as an approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment and lifestyle for each person. Is your organization currently conducting precision medicine to provide disease treatment and prevention to patients? Adoption of precision medicine across the studies have gone relatively unchanged from 28.5 percent in 2016 to 26 percent in There continues to be limited adoption across the U.S. hospital market as organizations may not have the necessary funds, technology, or clinical expertise on hand to initiate programs and provide precision medicine at the point of care. However momentum continues to increase around the level of interest in developing this emerging clinical approach and while organizations currently conducting precision medicine expand their current approach across more clinical areas. Unsure 16% Other 8% Uses dedicated precision medicine platform AND in-house solutions 36% From an IT perspective, organizations continue to primarily use a mix of solutions to meet their precision medicine needs. In 2016 roughly 18 percent of respondents with precision medicine initiatives in place used a combination of a dedicated precision medicine solution in conjunction with solutions already established in-house compared to 36 percent in the most recent study. Uses a dedicated precision medicine platform only 16% Uses current in-house solutions only 24% N= HIMSS Analytics The level of uncertainty around precision medicine and IT approach has dropped dramatically from just over 46 percent of respondents in 2016 to 16 percent in The results from this question were not meant to be a snapshot of the entire market. The intention was to show how respondent organizations are approaching precision medicine from an IT perspective, given the newness of incorporating precision medicine at the point of care.
