NanoSci-ERA NanoSci-ERA (Nanoscience in the European Research Area) is a Consortium of 17 national organisations from 12 countries. All organisations are carrying out national programmes in support of Nanoscience of similar size and orientation representing the majority of the activity in Europe and a significant fraction of world research NanoSci-ERA is focusing on fundamental research in Nanoscience.. Nanoscience is pivotal to further development in the field of nanotechnology.. Nanoscience addresses many of the problems we face as a society.

Running Consortium actions (1) Building a consolidated view of the European research landscape (WP1) Mapping of researchers and institutions evaluate European research potential. Ready at the end of the year. Indicators and comparisons among partners identify convergences, complementarities and areas of optimal cooperation. Example : Publications over period (Nano-objects and nano-materials) To be analyzed with a lot of caution

China S.Korea Germany Japan England Canada France India Spain Italy Australia Taiwan Singapore Russia Sweden Mexico Switzerland Brazil Israel Turkey Running Consortium actions (2) Indicators and comparisons extra-eu Example: Results of a bibliometric study performed by NanoSci-ERA Joint publications between U.S. researchers & researchers from other countries U.S.A. collaborative NST publications

Running Consortium actions (3) Inventory of specialized research infrastructures and facilities Specificities Activities Mode of interaction with local nanoscience research community Terms and conditions Expected results Increased visibility by disclosing research infrastructures information to a wider public Database on available facilities accessible to all researchers in EU Developed access for non-resident researchers Present status Operational database Website: European Nano institutes contacted in order to get an important amount of information to construct a viable database

Consortium actions (4) Organisation of regular meetings with the Research Community contribute to structuring the community at the European level Ex. 1: Assembly of the Nanoscience Research Community Format: Conference of 32 delegates from the 12 participating countries Held in Amsterdam on March 6-7, 2006 Aims: 1) relay the proposals of the Consortium to the national communities 2) induce collaborations for the Transnational Call 3) promote mutual knowledge and contacts of the national communities 4) provide feedback to the Consortium (needs/wishes of the community) Ex. 2: Workshop on Key challenges in Nanoscience Format: Workshop with 25 international prominent nanoscientists Held in Berlin on May 2-3, 2007 Aims: 1) help the consortium define the scientific topics for a 2nd call for proposals in ) have brain-storming discussions about the future of nanoscience research 3) develop a vision of the major challenges and opportunities in nanoscience

Transnational Call for Collaborative Proposals (1) Scope of call: Frontier research in nanoscience where the fabrication, study and/or control of INDIVIDUAL nano-objects is a core aspect of the project Target community: Young researchers (PhD defended less than 8 years ago) Experienced researchers whose excellence and implication in national research policy was recognized through the funding of a nanoscience project at the national level A collaboration between at least 3 countries required (max: 5) Budget: 8.7 M Funding: 200k /team over 3 years for the collaborations vectors (e.g. exchanges of post-docs or PhD students) Participating countries : 12 (FR, DE, UK, FI, IT, NL, AT, IL, ES, PL, PT, SK) Submission / Evaluation: 2 stages (Letters of Intent and Full Proposals) Reviewing by an international panel of experts (all outside the Consortium).
