Overview Continued What is adulticiding? Benefits of adulticiding Adulticiding ULV spraying Thermal fogger Barrier spray Aerial spray Adulticide formulations used Summary
Larviciding is used for specifically targeting the larval stage of an insect. Larvicides may be contact poisons, stomach poisons, growth regulators or biological control agents. WHAT IS LARVICIDING?
Benefits of Larviciding Larviciding can reduce the impact of adulticiding to the environment Introducing predators Products made for larviciding can be organic NPDES In North Carolina larviciding is not regulated by this permit and may reduce the need for a NPDES permit. Cost effective Reduces cost of adulticiding Depending on formulation larvicides can last for multiple broods. Treating a small area will reduce the need to adulticide a large area. Proactive approach Larviciding will keep mosquitos from emerging as adults and feeding on citizens. Reduces the egg bank Over time larviciding can reduce the number of eggs in the breeding site.
Larviciding Surveillance-is the visual inspection of an area. Know what habitat you re targeting. evaluate water quality evaluate treatment area to determine the best product to use determine proper application rate. Applications will be more successful relying on surveillance. Be sure to document your field investigation Public Education and site investigation-is a key component of an Integrated Pest Management Program (IPM). look for Asian Tiger (Aedes albopictus) breeding sites by dipping containers around property. Inform the citizen of the container. Recommend the tip and toss method to remove the breeding site. The Asian Tiger drives most of the initial citizens requests.
Surveillance Tip and Toss
Larviciding Biological Control-is the identification and use of mosquito predators. This is a simple and cost effective control strategy. check the surrounding ponds for Gambusa affinus (ditch minnows), dragon flies, damsel flies and predaceous diving beetles. transplant minnows into water if it will sustain the minnows. Larviciding strategies-are the use of a product placed in the water to prevent the larva from becoming adults. There are several types of application that can be used. Backpack sprayers, liquid sprayer, seeder, aerial or by hand with proper PPE.
Biological Chemical
Doing Nothing Doing nothing- when the population in the area is low, there is too much land to larvicide or the mosquitos that inhabit the area will not effect humans.
Larviciding Formulations Used Liquids Granular Water-soluble packets Tablets Oils Residuals
Adulticiding is one of the tools we have to control and manage mosquito populations. When done properly, adulticiding is an effective way to reduce the number of mosquitoes and reduce people's risk of contracting mosquito-borne diseases. What is Adulticiding?
Benefits of Adulticiding Helps prevent the spread of mosquito borne disease In some areas it is not possible to larvicide. Visual When a citizens thinks of mosquito control they picture the spray truck Effectiveness When you conduct a spraying operation the mosquito population will be reduced within a matter or hours. Coastal North Carolina is a big tourist area.
Adulticiding ULV spraying is applying an extremely small amount of adulticide over a very large area controlling adult mosquitoes while not adversely affecting man, wildlife or the environment. With accurate timing and precise application, a kill rate of over 90% can be achieved. Thermal Fogger is a space treatment against adult mosquitoes. The fog is heated to break up the chemical into very small droplets (usually in 5-30 micron diameter range) which will disperse in the air. When the chemical is heated, it is vaporized in a combustion chamber and forms a dense fog cloud when it condenses on contact with cool air.
ULV Sprayer Thermal Foggers Truck Mounted Hand Held
Adulticiding Barrier spraying-is the application of a repellant onto the surface of foliage to deter mosquitos from entering the feeding area. When conducting a barrier spray you will have to coat the surface of foliage to the point of run off. This method may last up to a month after treatment. Aerial spraying-is the use of a airplane or helicopter to apply a product over a inhabitable or large area where it would not be cost effective to use a truck mounted applicator.
Barrier Spray Aerial Spray
Adulticide Formulations Used For ULV s Ready to use-is a product that comes from the distributor ready to be applied. Concentrated-is a product that you will have to mix to the label recommendations. During this process you will need to wear the proper PPE that is recommended by the label.
