This is an overview of the Open Forums held to discuss infrastructure needs for animals in research and teaching. As you scroll through toggle the narrative by clicking on in the upper left hand corner of each slide. Please submit comments on infrastructure needs at

Animal Facilities Needs for Research Success Lon V. Kendall Laboratory Animal Resources

Institutional Core Research Facilities directly provide core function to CSU s research mission, through core research functions or services that include specific environmental needs and/or infrastructure spaces (e.g. buildings, hardware, security, air quality, isolation requirements, etc.) and have broad-base institutional support. Foundational Core Research Facilities directly provide one or more core functions across a broad spectrum of researchers, both within CSU and likely external to CSU Emerging Innovations Facilities provide resources and/or services in new or emerging areas of research and technology, both within CSU and potentially external to CSU

Requires capital investment Enhance research capacity Enhance animal welfare Improve animal care efficiencies

Percent Response Number of Comments Priority No Access Comments

Many PIs with unique needs; transcending difficult Updated caging for socialization, automatic watering, animal management system Behavior and imaging core with dedicated staff; but not large enough need Access to clinical pathology Metabolic studies Per diems at minimum should be priority; per diems are prohibitive Expand housing space

Core Facilities Imaging Core. Ability to conduct MRI, CT, PET, bioluminescent imaging on small animal models. Need to consider same ability in biocontainment. Multimillion dollar investment. Behavioral Core. Ability to conduct behavioral assessments which would include a surgical suite, necropsy suite, behavioral testing rooms and adjacent animal holding to minimize stressors. Testing apparatuses include water maze, rotorod, treadmill, elevated plus maze, startled response, etc... $ K investment for equipment. Would require 6-8 dedicated animal rooms. Could potentially be folded into Painter Center addition. Telemetry Core. Ability to collect real time physiological data such as heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, activity, glucose, etc $150K investment for equipment to expand on existing capabilities. Would require 2-4 dedicated animal rooms. Could potentially be folded into Painter Center addition.

Pathology Vivarium Air handling unit- NIH G20 awarded ($356K) Room renovations, reheat coils, duct work ($225K, funded) Caging NIH G20 submitted ($300K) Deer Facility Networking capabilities ($60K, funded) Air handling units ($100K each, 2 needed) Outdoor animal facilities ARBL livestock pens VTH Livestock pens (PSRL, $55K funded) ARDEC shelters Estimate more than $750K Facility monitoring system building ($50-100K) Humidity control across campus ($120K) Painter Center Light controls ($60K) Chiller connection ($325K, in progress) Enhance electrical capacity ($250K) Replacing aging mouse caging system ($2M) Increase capacity Reduce labor costs Enhance animal welfare Electrical and water savings Replace guinea pig caging- NIH G20 submitted ($200K, NIH submitted) Increase capacity Social needs

John E. Painter Center 2009 NIH Proposal $15M

Pathology Vivarium Animal holding SPF/Traditional Behavior Core SPF Cat

Lab Animal Resources Facility Proposed Funding TBD Total $7.35MIL $7.35MIL New centrally managed animal facility will provide 11,000 SF of state of the art indoor laboratory animal space, and acres sf of outdoor holding to support development of translational and biological therapies and clinical research This space will replace 5,000 sq foot of indoor holding space, and 2 acres of outdoor holding at the VTH, allowing expansion of VTH clinical specialty services. Will meet projected need for growth in holding space and eliminate the need to contract research animal work to off campus contract laboratories for support due to lack of facilities at CSU.

AIDL Facility Proposed Funding TBD Total $43.5MIL $43.5MIL * FY2017 Estimates AIDL conducts basic and applied research aimed at the overall goal of reducing the global burden of infectious diseases, in particular those that are emerging and transmitted to humans by arthropods or zoonotic reservoirs. AIDL received approximately 3.5M in total research dollars during 2014.

LAR RSSI Impact Increase animal holding in Painter Center, Pathology, IBTT Research Animal Holding. The proposed enhancements will increase our rodent holding capacity by 5700 cages. This is nearly a 2-fold increase in capacity. Holding capacity for large animals (dogs, cats, small ruminants) will also increase 2-3-fold. Minimizes investigators going off campus for studies involving large animals. AIDL Building. Existing proposal includes animal holding. This should be enhance to include additional non- ABSL3 housing for Foothills campus and replace antiquated facilities at Foothills. Expands novel model housing, such as bats to become a national expert and resource in bat reservoir of disease such as Zika, Influenza, other emerging viruses Rodent cage replacement. Improve husbandry efficiencies. Provides an appropriate amount of floor space to meet the regulations and guidelines, and social needs of research animals.

LAR RSSI Impact Additional procedure space to establish new capabilities. Behavioral core capabilities in Pathology renovation. Telemetry core in Painter renovation and RBL for ABSL3. Enhances ability to monitor animals in various studies, including infectious disease studies for humane endpoints Rodent imaging core potential in IBTT. Provides specialized pre-clinical capabilities for CSU and region. Expand abilities for investigators Restoration of base funding. Provides adequate oversight of animal care and use program for campus and eliminates potential conflict of interests; includes compliance costs; keeps user fees competitive to enhance recruitment and research impact.

Open Forum Discussions Maintain flexibility for current and expansion. Never know what needs may arise. Funding opportunities are decreased if there is not support for infrastructure growth. Imaging was provided as an example Develop large animal (horse, cattle) holding for research. Currently use teaching areas. Imaging for small (rodents) and large (horses) animals. With equipment that is standard use at other research facilities, i.e. T7 MRI. Large animal (ruminants, pig, horse) ABSL3 holding and instrumentation such as imaging. Environmental chamber for green house studies in cattle. Resource for what is available on campus that others would be willing to share

Comments Ideas welcome. Submit a comment via the link below. The survey will be available until 3/1/17
