2 CE-BIOTEC : New biotechnologies for environmental remediation Specific Challenge: Pollutants and toxic compounds are damaging for the environment and human health and an economic burden Bioremedation is more sustainable and gentle than physicochemical remediation However, we need to improve its effectiveness and resolve the challenges and limitations faced by bioremediation, e.g.: - Concentration of the pollutants - Complex mixtures - Maintenance of desired activities over time and space - Need for low energy input

3 CE-BIOTEC : New biotechnologies for environmental remediation Scope: Efficient and low cost remediation strategies with mixed microbial communities Microorganisms as part of e.g. (bio-)electrochemical systems or other systems that require minimum or zero external energy or chemicals Acceptable performance in field applications Remediation of complex mixtures, including hydrocarbons and their derivatives, metals, nutrients, antibiotics and/or micropollutants TRL from- 3 to 5 RIA 100% Proposals should accelerate remediation times of current approaches

4 CE-BIOTEC : New biotechnologies for environmental remediation International cooperation: This topic is part of the EU-China flagship initiative on Biotechnology for Environment and Human Health Single phase evaluation International cooperation Expected impact: Effective remediation of at least two toxic compounds Proof of scaling up feasibility EUR approx. 5 million(s) Demonstration of the benefits over standard physicochemical remediation approaches, including energy efficiency

5 CE-BIOTEC : Microorganism communities for plastics biodegradation Specific Challenge: Plastics separation for adequate recycling is increasingly difficult, confusing for consumers, and costly for waste treatment plants Some plastics cannot be recycled if traces of food are present Large amounts of mixtures of plastics and other polymers end up in landfills or are used for the generation of energy Plastics reach water courses and the sea where they persist and become toxic for the whole food chain Sustainable biological degradation of mixtures of recalcitrant and degradable plastics

6 CE-BIOTEC : Microorganism communities for plastics biodegradation Scope: Cocktails of enzymes using communities of microorganisms Biodegradation of mixtures of biodegradable and nonbiodegradable plastics TRL from- 3 to 5 Turn basic chemical constituents into higher value products International cooperation: This topic is part of the EU-China flagship initiative on Biotechnology for Environment and Human Health International cooperation Single phase evaluation

7 CE-BIOTEC : Microorganism communities for plastics bio-degradation Expected impact: Develop at least three new or improved enzymes Demonstrate degradation of at least 20 percent of currently non-biodegrable plastics EUR approx. 5 million(s) Produce at least two high added value products Describe a pilot system for the degradation of plastic mixtures that is sustainable and environmentally friendly RIA 100%
