6 If you re reading this, you re probably interested in building a new software product from scratch or growing your existing service with the help of a reliable and professional team. Well, that sounds very challenging, but it just so happens to be what we love doing. Now you re probably asking yourself if we truly are reliable and professional. We d like you to find out for yourself, starting by reading this short, five-minute brochure that shows our experience in different areas and describes what we do and how we work.

7 We work from Uruguay, a beautiful and innovative country in Latin America leading in areas such as renewable energies, technology access, and social equality. Let us tell you a bit more about it. Our timezone is strategic as we are located in EST+1. This allows us to work remotely with US teams during their normal working hours. Historically, Uruguayans have had strong English skills, mainly due to a large British influence, which helps us in being very fluent in our communications with English speakers. Uruguay s political stability is well regarded, generating solid institutions such as universities and education centers with free access. Free access to universities has generated a very high number of students. The Uruguayan government strongly encourages innovation and the exportation of IT services through several actions such as the OLTP program, startup incubators, and tax benefits. All these factors and policies have helped create a synergic ecosystem that seeks to create competitive companies who offer quality services to the world.

9 We build internet products We design and develop highly connected apps. Software solutions tend to be increasingly connected to different services around the globe, and the Unix s DOTADIW principle (Do One Thing And Do It Well) is becoming a commonly applied rule in software design. We adhere to such a simple but important philosophy, and it helps us describe our value proposition: the ability to recognize software that's been done well, to use it, to integrate it and to build new components on top of it that seek to fulfill the same purpose. Working with this philosophy has enabled us to gain experience in creating highly connected and scalable apps for different purposes, including web apps, mobile apps and backend solutions using a variety of technologies, libraries and services.

10 Sophilabs is a great team of professionals that helped us build a high-quality website Carlos Ramírez from Tapp Influensterproject Influenster is a community of tastemakers, social media hotshots, and educated consumers who give opinions on products and experiences. The main challenges we face with this project were implementing a thoroughly defined user interaction and then scaling it for millions of users. Using agile methods we worked together on building and polishing the main areas of the site. Thanks to a well designed code we were able to iterate and improve the site without affecting the critical features. Influenster s core is implemented with Python and Django. The data is persisted on Postgres and MongoDB, and the environments are provisioned through Ansible using Amazon AWS instances.

11 like web apps Building web apps may look easy, but building web apps the right way is not. Functional features are usually the primary focus when thinking about a new internet product. While this is correct, many important aspects such as security, performance, traceability, availability and scalability may be left behind. We have extensively used a variety of backend and frontend technologies to build web applications. Python, Django, Tornado, Node, Angular, Ember and React are our prefered tools, but we also work with other libraries and frameworks such as SASS, HapiJS, Meteor, Express, Flask, Bottle and Django Rest Framework. Which is why we always concern ourselves with non-functional requirements and use different techniques to build quality web apps; just to mention a few: caching, compression, CDN, load balancing and distributed computing, and protection against security attacks among others.

Aydin Acar from Influenster Oxford Economics project Oxford Economics is one of the world s foremost independent global advisory firms, providing reports, forecasts and analytical tools in 190 countries, 100 industrial sectors and over 2,600 cities. They came to us because they needed a clean modern website that reflects the company's proficiency and experience according to its market position. "Today I consider the website more than just a site. It is a platform on which we can do a lot of cool stuff going forward. It will help us keep our promise to deliver new innovations that will attract new clients and lead them to love what we do. At one point there was so much complexity the problem looked intractable. 13 or mobile apps We like to treat mobile as a user characteristic, rather than just a device feature. When designing mobile apps, we encourage the usage of mobile device features such as user location, push notifications, camera, voice recording, fingerprint scanning or any other feature that justifies the creation of a mobile app instead of a mobile friendly web app. We build native mobile apps on ios and Android when it needs to be scaled to million of users, and hybrid apps using cordova when the target market is not very big.

14 Our web site has been beautifully engineered by Sophilabs. Arvindra Sehmi from Oxford Economics Dispatch Ads project A media content delivery platform designed for the advertising industry, which enables remote multimedia content management and instant broadcasting over the Internet to screens placed in strategic locations throughout the city. We developed a dashboard web application and a multimedia player capable of playing videos, images and web content on screens distributed throughout the city. Django, Django REST Framework, Celery, PostgreSQL, Mandrill, Amazon Web Services, libvlc, SDL and Chromium Embedded Framework were some of the technologies chosen.

15 and backend solutions. A well designed backend is key to performance and scalability. It s best to choose the right tools and anticipate risks ahead of time. An experienced team is needed to help identify possible bottlenecks and make sure scalability is non-blocking when the time comes. different technologies and platforms such as AWS, Azure, Docker, Postgres, RabbitMQ, Redis, Cassandra, MongoDB, Puppet, Solr and Nginx. Having experience integrating different tools to accomplish these goals is crucial. We have designed and deployed APIs, cloud services and batch processing systems on different architectures using

16 The Sophilabs team helped us deliver features which involved complex logic and an efficient architecture. Ariel Assaf from Cloudoscope Cloudscope project Cloudoscope is a provider of Cloud network monitoring and analytic solutions for IT solution providers delivering datacenter optimization solutions and services They were very keen on providing the simplest possible solution to help sysadmins monitor performance on different data center resources. The idea was to build unobtrusive agents, that connect directly to the hosts and collect the data without the need of installing external packages or services. We built a data store service using Django and PostgreSQL that saves the samples reported by agents while the engagements are running. A data processor agent built on top of Cassandra generates time series from those samples.

Each project is different, and each of them presents new challenges, but we have been acquired vast experience that help us identify similar problem patterns and suggest probed solutions to solve them. Our value is increased when we are able to understand our customer s business, vision and value proposition and then help discovering challenges that were initially hidden. and we rely on best practices We use Scrum, Kanban and XP practices everyday. Scrum is used in most of our new developments. For maintenance projects we use Kanban. We adhere to the Agile manifesto, declaring that our highest priority is to satisfy the customer through early and continuous

18 delivery of valuable software. We follow the main Agile principles: continuous visibility, adaptation, and improvement. In addition, we use practices that we feel add value to our process such as automated testing, code reviews and continuous delivery. 20 always teaching ourselves. Most of our team members give internal talks regularly on new technologies or open source projects. They also take part in hackathons like Django Dash and NodeNockout. We organize conferences such as JSConf Uruguay in addition to Python and Javascript meetups. We invest in ourselves by dedicating two days each month to learning new technologies and practices, and applying them in our projects.
