Shrinking defense budgets, an increasingly aggressive competitor set, and riskier market conditions are pushing A&D companies to focus on protecting their profit margins. At the same time, process and technology innovation are helping A&D companies devise new business models for revenue growth and global expansion. In the today s era of big data, A&D companies now have new ways to win in this environment. Data is coming from everywhere, as connected products, engineering designs, integrated systems, global supply chains, and extended business ecosystems become even more complex. Opportunities to manage this complexity are appearing across all parts of the industry. IBM has worked with the A&D industry for over half a century on projects ranging from multistage rocket research to real-time messaging platforms for air traffic control. At the 2013 Paris Air Show, IBM will highlight our latest perspectives and solutions to help A&D clients achieve real business results. 4 A&D solutions to manage development complexity to improve engineering efficiency Architecture and system affordability optimization Integrate engineering and operations lifecycles to accelerate innovation and improve in-service delivery IBM collaborates with many A&D industry partners to develop data integration and engineering workflow frameworks. In partnership with clients, IBM has developed key tools and capabilities to provide cross domain advanced decision support technology; this technology helps engineers develop complex systems by optimizing pre-defined features (performance, complexity, weight, cost) of systems. IBM is also extending engineering design optimization capabilities to develop affordability models and computation methods for complex affordability analysis using real customer data (maintainability, interoperability, fuel costs, upgradeability). This modeling provides insight into design decisions on actual usage costs by combining system and components models, smart optimization algorithms, and operational data. Architecture and system affordability optimization modeling will be discussed. The technology is intended to allow accurate prediction of system affordability and help make appropriate choices about architecture and components early in the design phase to improve cost-value ratios. 5 Long term data preservation Archiving of engineering design information to satisfy aircraft certification IBM s LTDP (Long Term Data Preservation) solution is based on leading-edge technology, A&D industry expertise, IBM Research, and industry standards. The solution was first developed to preserve decades worth of PLM data models in order to meet EASA and FAA requirements. The LTDP solution allows for long term data archive and retrieval of different types of engineering and aircraft data that is required for aircraft certification. It provides secured electronic archiving of data, including 3D/DMU data, geometric tolerance information, electrical design data and product structure (for years of storage per EASA/FAA aircraft certification requirements). The IBM DIAS PLM (Digital Information Archiving System for Product Life Cycle Management) solution, which forms the basis for the LTDP solution, combines processes, software, and hardware to store and manage media, while ensuring long term viability and compliance with the industry standards. 6 Engineering analytics using operational data Integrate engineering and operations lifecycles adelivery The rise of digital technology and connectivity for physical systems creates tremendous improvement opportunities for engineering design and systems maintenance. The increase in digital technology is leading to a smarter infrastructure that uses a data/insight feedback loop to help make better and more informed decisions. Smarter systems will collect product usage and performance data from the field through sensors and other devices, providing information that will help engineers produce more efficient and higher quality designs. IBM will discuss capabilities to automate the handover of complex systems operational data to support analytics and optimization that improve future products and services. 7 Predictive program management through improved analytics Detect areas of risk and evaluate what-if-scenarios for better decision making Early warning of potential program issues is critical. Program teams commit to delivering products by a specific date. It is essential that the project leaders understand any impact to the on-time delivery schedule as early as possible in order to promptly deploy successful remediation actions. IBM has developed multiple program management tools using predictive analytics and advanced simulation capabilities to help these teams make better and more informed decisions. 8 Integration & collaboration hub Facilitate secure ALM/PLM integration and global engineering collaboration As A&D companies focus on their core competencies and capabilities, new relationships and business models are also emerging on a global basis. This is particularly apparent within engineering design and manufacturing domains that were previously primarily owned by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). With the evolution of a more horizontal landscape, vertically integrated enterprises are becoming unbundled; this requires more flexible and cost effective integration capabilities. IBM has developed an integration and collaboration hub solution to help A&D companies acquire these capabilities, resulting in accelerated product innovation and faster time-to-market. IBM experts will discuss strategies and solutions aimed at optimizing collaboration among OEMs, partners, and suppliers. A&D companies are looking to transform their engineering organizations to accelerate innovation, enhance global collaboration, and increase efficiencies at reduced cost. The heart of this strategy is dynamic access to critical, shared resources - skilled engineering (regardless of location), capital intensive IT (consolidated / centralized), and world class applications (centrally maintained). This strategy presents opportunities for large and small organizations alike, and forms the basis for IBM s solutions utilizing cloud technology. Starting with a remote access demo to a centralized engineering system for a 2D/3D virtual desktop/workstation environment, IBM experts will explain how engineering and IT can work in unison for greater impact to business results. 10 A&D solutions to grow the top line through differentiated aftermarket services In-service data harmonization and information insight across the ecosystem The single view of the truth for asset lifecycle information to create new business opportunities This IBM solution enables the sharing and standardization of in-service data while providing a secure platform for Big Data analytics and business ecosystem collaboration. The solution provides A&D clients with real-time or near real-time visibility of their critical assets by continuously aggregating and monitoring data from a variety of sources; this includes aircraft sensor data streams, maintenance records, environmental conditions and location information combined with engineering specifications and configuration information. The solution features standardized service data sharing and helps to overcome the inconsistency and incompleteness to establish data veracity. It also provides a platform for deriving insight and collaboration across the business ecosystem. An example of an in-service data platform combined with a customer portal handling electronic logbook information for aero-engines and other operational data will be demonstrated. 11 Asset availability and performance optimization in the times of Big Data Leverage the power of analytics to fuel fleet efficiency and optimized asset availability New aircraft systems generate a huge amount of in-service information (volume growth from megabytes to terabytes). The ability to analyze in-flight data to interpret systems conditions and to understand the causal relationships of equipment performance variance is a key enabler for operational efficiency. This solution optimizes asset availability by leveraging the full value of in-service data and analytics driven predictive maintenance or near real time anomaly detection (velocity), combined with as-maintained asset configurations. It improves asset performance through tailored analysis of the historical assets resulting in full control of business KPIs related to services. Benefits of the solution include: A demonstration of the asset management tool will be shown, including using analytics to provide new insights and information for improved decision making. 12 Solution initiatives and research projects IBM investment in the integrated service management domain Smarter Lifecycle Asset Management (SLAM) IBM s SLAM solution is a cross industry offering that integrates asset information and processes. It provides a comprehensive portfolio of capabilities, including: industry asset models; enterprise integration models for the asset lifecycle; data handovers between lifecycle phases; platforms for ecosystem data sharing; and asset operations optimization. Smart MRO Prototype The Smart Maintenance Repair and Operations (Smart MRO) prototype is designed to help manufacturers and companies supplying and maintaining high-value machinery in sectors such as aerospace, oil & gas, and shipping. Using a combination of augmented reality and robotics, the system brings critical information and off-site expertise directly to field engineers. Various presentations, scenarios,and examples for both SLAM and Smart MRO will be shown. 13 Smarter asset management for a smarter military IBM solutions for aviation maintenance Managing complex assets, such as rotary/fixed wing and unmanned aircraft, has become increasingly demanding due to heightened requirements for security, safety, and quality, as well as increased focus on availability and cost-to-budget constraints. The rising cost to procure and sustain these sophisticated platforms under performance-based contracts requires a deep understanding of configuration management. IBM s Maximo Asset Configuration Management (ACM) Electronic Flight Log Book (FLB) solution has been developed to address these needs, supporting Department of Defense, Department of State, and FAA requirements. IBM Maximo s FLB solution provides pilots, instructors, and ground personnel with a modern web-based log book solution accessible through industry standard web browsers and built on mobile-ready technology making it portable to smart tablets, kiosks, and even mobile handheld devices. 14 A&D solutions to build and optimize dynamic value chains Supply chain visibility and integration Transform your supply chain into a dynamic value chain IBM supply chain visibility and integration solution links production and supply chain operations with business goals, operational planning, and financial planning. By leveraging advanced analytics, it enables end-to-end visibility throughout the extended value chain (including suppliers, customers, contractors, and third parties). The solution enables the integration of the large volumes of data created across all tiers of the supply chain and variety of data sources driven by ecosystem complexity. This is achieved through end-to-end collaboration model to synchronize the planning, sourcing, production and movement of goods. Key solution features include: Quality Early Warning System Consensus Collaborative Planning Forecasting and Replenishment (CPFR) Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) processes The supply chain visibility and integration solution will be discussed, simulating how partners and vendors can collaboratively plan, forecast, order, and manage inventory throughout the supply chain. The cutting edge model-driven development methodology is used as part of the solution to help clients drive down supply chain costs and increased flexibility. The solution aligns market demand with supply and utilizes effective asset and quality management, systems integration, and production oversight to: Optimize production capacity and resource utilization through integrated planning and scheduling with telescopic planning horizon Minimize wait time between operations Use real-time data to monitor the production quality and more quickly identify and resolve issues Proactively maintain manufacturing equipment, production tooling and facilities based on failure prediction and historical usage pattern analysis.
