Introduction The advent of small, lightweight, user-friendly wireless devices, such as internet-enabled cell phones and wireless PDAs, coupled with cutting edge Internet application development allows organizations to collect and distribute data in ways that were unimaginable till a few years ago. Wireless Data has the potential to instantly bring about an information communications revolution that will connect anybody, anywhere, anytime to any information. This convergence of the Internet and Wireless technologies has made mobile computing the technology that will deliver. Delivering spatial information on PDAs and other wireless devices can help organizations to manage workforce more efficiently to meet customer commitments and provide optimal service delivery, while reducing costs and streamlining operations. Mobile workers are provided with instant and timely access to information to help them complete their work. Total Onsite Management Solution (TOMS) TOMS is a GIS based solution that helps Utility companies to provide facilities for fault tracking, customer care, planning and efficient management of a large distributive network and more importantly provide a framework for better integration and analysis of relevant facility information derived from several sources in graphics environment. TOMS is a scalable web-based GIS On-site management solution, which can address the needs of Utility sector like Oil & Gas, Telecom, Power, Water & wastewater. The concept of connectivity is fundamental to TOMS. And herein lies the core strength of the solution. The inherent connectivity logic makes possible network tracing and identification of plant items that are linked together. TOMS consists of two standard applications a. Back Office Application This application enables the office staff to update requests and keep track of the status of fault reporting using their desktop computers. All updates made by field staff will be reflected in the Back Office database. This application also has the facility to locate network elements/entities on the desktop mapping system. b. Field Staff Application This is a PDA application and is primarily meant for the field staff to make queries and updates regarding the status of job allotted to each crewmember. 5 3. TOMS - Key Features 3.1 Back Office Module 1. Display of Network elements in the form of Reports. The back office module has Built-in capability to display each and every network element with the associated database. For e.g.: In a Telecom application MDF s (Main Distribution Frames) and DP boxes under a city exchange can be displayed in the form of report as shown below. Each element is identified using a unique ID generated by the customer. The subsequent sections display and explain the power of TOMS for the Telecom sector as an unique instance. 2. Spatial representation of MDF s and associated data which can be easily understood by the Technical and non-technical staff in an organization. If a particular MDF is selected on the network report, the application displays the selected MDF on the maps. The application all throws open a report on the selected MDF. 6 3. Powerful and quicker Spatial query based on Name or Telephone Number. TOMS has the facility to search a parcel based on customer name or customer number. 4. Displaying the location of queried parcel and creating work order. Facility to trace route from one location to another on the network. Eg: Below shows the route from City Exchange to parcel is traced on the intermediate MDF & DP boxes. The work order creation is based on complaint type, priority, date etc. The work order is created & assigned to a field crewmember. Copyright Magnasoft 6

7 5. Facility to extract data from existing CRM database of the Client. Clients can integrate TOMS with the existing CRM database maintained. This helps in creating work orders from the existing database without the need for migrating to new database. 6. Report generation facility on field staff. Reports can be generated showing the status of job assigned to each member. At the end of day these reports help managers to keep track of the status of pending work & assign new job next day. 8 7. Ordering and short listing of work orders based on conditions. When many work orders are assigned to a crew member, the application helps in short listing the work orders based on priority and location The short listed work orders are the synchronized from desktop to the crewmember s PDA device. 9 3.2 Field Crew Application 1. Remote delivery of work order on PDA device. The list of work orders short listed for each crew member is sent to the crewmember s PDA, which he can use on the field to trace the location of faulty lines. 2. Spatially locating the selected parcel on the PDA device. The crewmember can select the parcel ID from the list to see the location of the particular parcel from where the complaint is logged. 10 3. Getting information on customers & network elements. The PDA application also provides information on the customer such as the parcel ID, work order ID, complaint description etc. The application also displays the location and report of the MDF associated with the particular customer 4. Updating the work orders using PDA. After the work assigned to a crewmember is completed he can update the current status of the work order on his PDA.
