1 International Seminar: Big Data for Official Information and Decision Making 16 and 17 June, 2014 INFOTEC, Mexico Preliminary program Background The generation and availability of the digital information, as well as the widespread use of electronic devices make it possible to generate official information, statistical and geographical. The production and availability of digital information, as well as the massive use of electronic devices, can make possible its use for generating official, statistical and geographical information. The statistical community has acknowledge the potentiality that Big Data has to help generating updated and coherent information in economic, social and environmental issues to support a more efficient public decision making. Nevertheless, to extract the potentiality of Big Data, the adequate legislation and regulation will be needed to support the exploitation of data bases for public purposes, assuring privacy and the information security. It should also promote the use of the adequate methodologies and technologies, among other challenges. What we have is an enormous amount of data of great variety and generated much faster every time, coming from mobile devices, internet transactions, remote sensors and networks, social networks and the mass media. Objective Present and discuss the main opportunities and challenges that the Big Data phenomena represent to the official information. 1
