5 What is a perm? Moisture permeability is a material s ability to allow water vapor to pass through it. It is measured in perms, or permeance (ASTM E-96) - The perm in US measurement is defined as 1 grain of water vapor per hour, per square foot, per inch of mercury Concrete moisture on the job site can be measured either by Calcium Chloride testing (ASTM F-1869) or a Relative Humidity Probe (ASTM 2170) 5

6 Why use a moisture vapor barrier? Moisture sources exist and permeation through concrete will happen (can happen over days to months) - Free water within the concrete - Water from under the slab The cost of damage to flooring is high applicators have to remove entire floor and rebuild - Seamless Flooring (ex. broadcast, terrazzo etc.) - Floor coverings (ex. tiles, carpet, laminate etc.) The potential personnel exposure and illness associated with mold and mildew 6
