2 DESIGNING FOR BEHAVIO- RAL HEALTHCARE A safe environment is critical; however, no environment can be entirely safe and free of risk. The majority of persons who attempt suicide suffer from a treatable mental disorder or a substance abuse disorder or both. Patients of inpatient psychiatric treatment facilities are considered at high risk for suicide; the environment should avoid physical hazards while maintaining a therapeutic environment. The built environment, no matter how well it is designed and constructed, cannot be relied upon as an absolute preventive measure. Staff awareness of their environment, the latent risks of that environment, and the behavior risks and needs of the patients served in the environment are absolute necessities. Different organizations and different patient populations will require greater or lesser tolerance for risk. AIA Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Healthcare Facilities, 2006 Edition, NAPHS Design Guide for the Built Environment of Behavioral Health Facilities Behavioral health units and facilities should be designed to appear comfortable, attractive, and as residential in character as possible. The focus on patient and staff safety has often pushed the aesthetics of these units toward the appearance of a prison environment. The Planetree organization actively advocates for patient centered design and has made a significant positive impact on the general hospital therapeutic environment. However, many healing environment features that are desirable for a medical surgical environment do not adapt well to behavioral health units and hospitals. Planetree designated its first Patient-Centered behavioral health hospital in The final design must avoid an institutional look while meeting the array of applicable codes and regulations as well as the therapeutic and safety needs for patients and staff. The challenge, therefore, is to strike a balance between the safest possible healing environment and a non-institutional appearance that is correct for the unique conditions that exist in each and every facility.* Intersan s and Wallgate by Intersan s have range of solid surface products are ligature resistant and vandal resistant in design whilst remaining extremely domestic in appearance. Understanding that older persons, with or without dementia, will perceive their environment differently is a good starting point for designing their living environments. Greater contrast in fixtures will help highlight them for older people. This is why a colored and contrasting toilet seat will not only help with positioning, it will also help with recognizing the toilet as such by people with dementia. *James M.
