5 5 PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE: I have been a practitioner in the Building Industry for thirty-five years commencing with an apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery. I have completed my technical trade training and gained the Clerk of Works Certificate from TAFE and went on to work in the Industry as a carpenter and progressed through to General Manager of construction with an annual budget of $60,000,000 per year. I have successfully owned and operated my own construction companies that have been involved in residential medium density, commercial and industrial construction as well as building maintenance and remedial operations. My Diploma in Adult Education and my experience within the building and construction industry has allowed me to develop and write Vocational Education Training Advisory Board (VETAB) accredited courses in the areas of Building Construction; Estimating and Tendering; Accounts Management for Builders; Staff Management for Builders and Contracts Management. These courses have been widely used throughout various training organisations in NSW including TAFE, Housing Industry Association and the Building and Construction Training Council of NSW. My detailed building experience and knowledge has provided me with opportunities to serve on various State Government and private Advisory Boards including the Building Services Corporation; Department of Fair Trading; and Construction Industry Training Advisory Board (CITAB). I am conversant with the process of building dispute resolution from obtaining accreditation as a Mediator through the Lawyers Engaged in Alternative Dispute Resolution (LEADR) and my experience as a Contract Building Inspector and Mediator for the Department of Fair Trading has given me broad experience throughout the various stages of dispute resolution from on-site mediations to matters before the Building Disputes Tribunal, now known as the Consumer Trader & Tenancy Tribunal. I am a qualified Mediator and currently seeking to improve my dispute resolution skills by studying for the Professional Certificate in Arbitration at the University of Adelaide. I was a Senior Lecturer for the Housing Industry Association for five years and progressed to Senior Manager, Training and Education for the Association. In this role I represented the HIA on several boards including the Building Services Corporation, Department of Fair Trading, Construction Industry Training Advisory Board and numerous internal HIA and industry committees. This exposure gave me a broad understanding of industry issues. I was responsible for the development and implementation of various policies to improve the industry standing. I was also an integral part of building contract review committees and contributed to two reviews of the builders licensing system within NSW.
