19 cobblestone site organization cisterns and water wall Main Travis cisterns and water wall narrow fountains The implications of pedestrian path mirror the patterns of a fairway on a golf course. Using different species of grasses cut at differing heights, we plan to embark an encouraging walk able area. The strips bordering the retail areas of the buildings will be paved in a cobblestone which wraps around the central hub, thus encouraging pedestrian traffic in all areas of the site. For the triangular wedges located along the travis and main street edge, we plan on placing cisterns to effectively collect storm water drainage and to recycle the water to irrigate the green areas as well as roof gardens. A water feature composed of a glazed panel with water running on either side will serve as an attraction to pull pedestrians across the 70 green space and to prevent the water in the cisterns from remaining stagnant. We also propose small narrow fountains with vertical spouts to reduce the large scale of the 70 diagonal space.

38 hvac systems Our mechanical concept focuses on the overall scale of the project, and ways of rethinking conventional mechanical systems to better serve the user and become an asset to the environment. Our design load is 1,000 tons of Cooling which allows for 2.5 tons of cooling per apartment unit. A chilled water system seems to be the best means of mechanical heating and cooling each apartment, and provides the user with individual control. In using a chilled water system, we propose to utilize two centrifugal compressors that provide 500 tons of cooling a piece. The compressors operate on the latest refrigerant technology, which are free of CFC s and ozone depleting gases. The centrifugal compressors will be housed on the basement level 1 parking garage to allow ease of maintenance and a central location on the site. The second component to a chilled water system is cooling towers, which dissipate the heat from the water tubing. We are exploring an approach to cooling towers that would connect the ventilation tubes and fans that exhaust the basement air and the condesing coil of the cooling towers to provide a lower air temperature to the condenser and eliminating half of the fans needed for mechanical operations on this project. Another alternative to a typical cooling tower mounted on the roof is the idea of water cooled units that would be fed through our water collection and cistern concept. The condensing coils would be placed along the perimeter of the open structure pieces, water would then flow around the coils dissipating the heat. The water then flows into a vertical water element that is proposed and finally back into the cisterns until it is either re-circulated or used for outdoor watering of green spaces.
