4 A solution that sits comfortably with everyone. The Schöck Isokorb thermal break element. 4

5 Thermal bridges are a frequent cause of increased heat and energy loss, dampness and mould formation. The problem arises particularly on cantilevered elements such as balconies. The Schöck Isokorb provides construction experts with an effective countermeasure, not only by thermally separating element from one another, but also acting as a structural component. This is why it is referred to as a load-bearing thermal insulation element. If the Schöck Isokorb didn t already exist it would have to be invented! What is a thermal bridge? Thermal bridges are areas in the external envelope where, due to material and/or design, a greater outward flow of heat occurs than in adjacent areas. A distinction is made between geometrical thermal bridges (the principle of increased surface area with cooling fin effect ) and material thermal bridges (coupled components with differing thermal conduction). In practice there is often a mix of both effects. The classic example of this is the balcony slab. Thermal imaging dramatically demonstrates the increased outflow of heat. The dangers of thermal bridges In the area of the thermal bridge the temperature of inside surfaces drops to such a degree that during the cold months there is a serious risk that the temperature will fall below the dewpoint. This leads to condensation and mould growth, which is one of the major sources of respiratory allergies such as asthma. dewpoint A dramatic temperature decrease will result in condensation and mould growth. Expensive side effects Due to the increased outward flow of heat around the thermal bridge more heating energy has to be used in order to maintain a constant room temperature. Thermal bridges can be responsible for up to a third higher energy requirements. The Schöck Isokorb is a noticeable factor in energy savings. 5

6 The leader in thermal and sound insulation. The new Schöck Isokorb XT with HTE Module. Improved insulating material Decreased thermal conductivity thanks to Neopor 1) (λ = W/(m K)) Increased insulation thickness The insulating element thickness of the Schöck Isokorb XT is 120 mm. Optimised shear force rods Compared to the Isokorb with an insulation thickness of 80 mm, the angle of inclination of the shear rods is less but with equal load bearing capacity. For improved impact sound insulation. MODULE Optimised HTE module Schöck has once again improved the time-tested HTE (High Thermal Efficiency) module that has been used for many years: A new recipe for the heavy-duty micro-steel fiber concrete with the aggregate Kronolith 2) increases the thermal insulation of the HTE module by more than 40% with a same cross section. The new HTE module also keeps its impressive load capacity and its time-tested safety features. The result is a excellent combination of high load capacity and optimized thermal insulation. This innovative solution is one of the keys to the low thermal conductivity of the Schöck Isokorb XT. 6

7 Schöck, the inventor and innovator of the Isokorb has once again redefined state-of-the-art when it comes to thermal break technology. With the Isokorb type XT we have taken a further step into the future by achieving 30 % more thermal insulation and 50 % more impact sound insulation. This exceptional combination of thermal insulation and impact sound protection performance for balconies and walkways is confirmed by the XT being the only element of its type to be accredited to German Passivhaus standard. Approved by the Passivhaus Institute 5) Top thermal insulation element for cantilever balconies. Now even passive houses can be constructed with free cantilever balconies without a problem. The new Schöck Isokorb XT is approved as a low thermal bridge construction by the Passivhaus Institute. 1) Neopor is a registered brand name of BASF 2) Kronolith is a registered brand name of KRONOS ecochem 3) Average over all types KXT and QXT in comparison with the corresponding Isokorb types K and Q with d = 80 mm w.r.t. equiv. R eq. 4) In comparison with the Schöck Isokorb types with d = 80 mm with height 180 mm w.r.t. L n,v,w. 5) Passivhaus Institute, Darmstadt, Top class impact sound insulation The Schöck Isokorb XT provides 50 % better impact sound insulation. 4) This means that compliance with the future planned minimum requirements for balconies and the existing minimum requirements for covered balconies are mostly met without any additional floating flooring. 7

8 Thermal insulation for concrete-to-concrete construction. The Schöck Isokorb type K with HTE-Module. 80 mm The original Optimized through experience and research over 25 years. The Schöck Isokorb thermally separates external reinforced concrete components from the main building structure. Excellent thermal insulation Thanks to HTE compression modules, minimized reinforcement content, and improved Neopor insulating material. 8

9 The Schöck Isokorb, with an insulation thickness of 80 mm or 120 mm and HTE modules, offers guaranteed safety and efficiency. With its perfected and detailed solutions, there are many engineering, design and handling advantages for the construction site. MODULE Installation-optimised Whether it's on the building site or at the precaster: No more snags when installing into the reinforcement. This is ensured by particular product components in the Isokorb. With Schöck Isokorb, the fixing of the tension rods is not done by welding distributor, as before, but is instead released with a plastic bars profile, which also shields the fire protection plates. A clever clip technology in the HTE module contained with in the insulating material ensures proper fixing of the shear rods and compression modules. The special form of the shear rods and the flush arrangement of the HTE compression modules with in the insulation saves additional time and costs in installation in any situation. This has also been verified in case studies. 9

14 Renovation concept. With Schöck Isokorb type KST. Thermal break between steel balcony and timber beam floor. Thermal break for timber beam floors. In many old buildings the intermediate floor is a timber beam structure. To produce a thermally separated balcony connection the floor structure is partially exposed in the connection area. A steel profile with a faceplate is then fixed to the wooden beams. The Schöck Isokorb KST is connected to the faceplate at the point where the facade is penetrated. The steel structure for the new balcony is mounted from outside. The vertical loads in the connection area are passed into the wall through new supports realised by cast concrete. This ensures an optimal thermal break between the balcony and the slab. The benefits of the Schöck Isokorb at a glance. Effective thermal insulation Design flexibility Protection from structural damage Modular construction Savings on heating costs Simple installation 14

15 85% of existing buildings are poorly insulated or not insulated at all. It is therefore necessary to upgrade older buildings using extensive thermal insulation measures. Preventing thermal bridges at the balcony connection is critical, if the solution is to meet full compliance with the Building Regulations. Incorporating the Isokorb at the balcony connection means that it is possible to guarantee the same high standard of thermal performance for balcony renovation work as was previously only available for new buildings. Experienced structural engineers from our Design Support Department are on hand to provide any help you may require in developing specific proposals for refurbishment projects. Thermal break between concrete balcony and reinforced concrete inner slab. Simple solution for reinforced concrete slabs. When dealing with an existing load bearing RC slab, the first step is to cut the concrete back where the balcony has to be connected, exposing the reinforcement. After that a steel angle plate (see illustration) is fixed on site. Concrete is poured into the cut-back area to complete and strengthen the bond between the steel components and the existing slab, creating a load bearing connection. The thermal break is formed by fitting the type KST Isokorb to the steel angle plate. This creates two options for the external connection a steel balcony using a front plate, or a concrete balcony, using a front plate with pre-welded tension bars. Thermal break between steel balcony and reinforced concrete inner slab. The renovation solutions guarantee compliance with the requirements for prevention of condensation and mould along with total design freedom. 15

Brickwork with high apparent density λ = 1.0 W/(Km) Temperature below the dew-point 12.6 As you can clearly see in our illustration, elements that allow heat loss, such as the uninsulated first course shown, create a thermal bridge which allows valuable warmth and energy to escape and risks damaging the building. Strong point From stone strength class 6 to 20 = very high load capacity. Calculation is also compatible with the simplified procedures of the DIN Schöck Novomur light λ = W/(Km) Schöck Novomur λ = W/(Km) Temperature 12.6 far above the dew-point Here the first course is fitted with the Schöck Novomur element, thus preventing thermal bridges from forming and making damp and mouldy walls a thing of the past. Easy to work with Length 0.75 m for ease of handling complies to the usual bond formats. 18

19 Schöck Novomur significantly reduces the risk of thermal bridges forming and helps meet compliance with the most stringent regulations regarding energy saving. Schöck Novomur is the foundation stone for modern construction. You can bank on it! Argument in favour of high quality construction Dampness is inevitable on construction sites, not least because of rain. Tough insulation High load bearing high quality insulation! λ = 0,268 W/(Km) for Schöck Novomur and λ = 0,193 W/(Km) for Schöck Novomur light Normal porous bricks/blocks soak up this moisture and store it. After the plaster is on the walls and the temperature inside rises, the dampness then starts to seep out. Accredited For KS Brick/blockwork now available for use with normal or thin-bed mortar. The building then takes, on average, up to three years to finally dry out (see illustration). Insulation block(s) Novomur insulation element Best protection The element is practically non capillary absorbent. Minimal moisture absorption during construction. Average moisture content Practical moisture contente Time (months) Schöck Novomur light: The exceptionally viable element for detached and terraced housing Results: Damp building materials, poor insulation, increased heat outflow, lower surface temperature. 21 Having a place with peace and quiet to return to is one of our most basic needs. Especially in a time that's full of hectic activity and noise, people increasingly need a place for quiet relaxation. Therefore, noise protection in buildings can not be considered a luxury, but rather a necessity. Planners need to pay close attention to stairways in multi-family buildings in particular. Indeed, noise in these locations is a frequent, even daily, point of contention. And needless to say, the legal concerns speak for themselves. Schöck noise protection systems As complete,ready-to-install solutions, Schöck noise protection systems simplify planning and noise bridge-free installation of impact noisereducing elements in stairways. The individual systems are listed below: System type T System type F System type QW System type AZ System type AZT System type ZF The systems consist of the following components: Schöck tronsoles Schöck joints PL type Installation aids Certifications and guidelines 21

23 What's on the outside has to reflect what's on the inside. During installation, every detail counts. They're the same! Or maybe not? A look at practical practice reveals the following: Planners carefully choose building components in accordance with the objective, and based on knowledge and calculations. And then? When the time comes to begin construction, in many cases other products which were not specified in the contract end up being used. This way of doing things is problematic, however, as is clearly indicated by the OLG Munich judgment of July 9, 1983: "If the likelihood of damage arising from an installed product that does not conform to the technical specifications is even one percent, then equivalence shall no longer be present". Specified materials and products should therefore also be used for this reason as well. A substitution is only permissible in cases where the alternate product is at least equivalent or better, or if the client provides written consent to the change. Subject: Warranty obligation "If a contractor wishes to avoid any resulting restrictions of use or damages - and thus any warranty obligation - he or she must explain to the client the risks associated with the concerned materials or methods, including any limits to what is known, and ensure the cleint's consent. This is all the more advisable considering that when there is uncertainty concerning the risks of use, it must be announced as a structural defect." OLG Munich, BauR 1981,
