4 3 C2006 AN INTRODUCTION TO FIRE DOS WHAT FIRE DO TESTING IS ABOUT Test standards are designed to evaluate the fire resisting capabilities of dosets. Tests are conducted by Approved bodies whose Test Repts and Assessments fmally confirm the integrity of a fire do (e.g. FD30 & FD60). These documents are the primary source of infmation summarised in manuals and literature to aid customers making dos from. A brief summary of testing follows. THE REAL FIRE SITUATION Following full flashover, gases already present in the room will be heated, and thus expand, creating a greater pressure than is present outside. At the same time, combustion processes create additional gases, adding to the imbalance overpressure and the combination of hot gases rises to the upper zone of the room. Continuing, the combustion seeks me oxygen to maintain the process, which is drawn into the room through gaps at the lower zone, creating a slightly negative pressure in this area. HOW THE TEST IS CONDUCTED This pressure regime fire test is considered appropriate because it replicates natural conditions similar to this experienced in a real fire. The test is perfmed with a positive pressure within the upper part of a furnace. Such pressure fces the hot furnace gases through gaps joints in the assembly which are essential f movement in nmal service, especially those gaps between do leaf and frame. Invariably, it is as a result of these hot gases that integrity failure occurs. To pass the rigous standard of the tests, a similarly high standard of design and specification is essential. That includes the perfmance of intumescent materials which seal gaps and reduce thermal transfer. SIMILAR APPLICATION ELSEWHERE The same testing principle is included in the International Standard ISO 834, which fms the basis of many tests in other countries. TEST RESULTS WKING IN PRACTICE Fire resisting dos are rarely supplied in an identical fm to that which was tested. The specification will invariably require the do to be supplied at a size, in a mode, with glazing openings, glass and ironmongery that are different to that tested. 7 6 FABRICATION & SPECIFICATION INTRODUCTION Prima do blanks are made in a 3-layer particle board. The density (monolithic structure) and surface finish of permits the construction of dos without the need f perimeter framing the addition of plywood MDF faces. CONSTRUCTION STANDARD METHOD This manual serves to define the production requirements in der to achieve and maintain the fire integrity of a fire do using do blanks. ALTERNATIVE BOND-UP METHOD There may be a requirement to face with ply MDF when fabricating fire dos, and this bond-up method is a valid alternative using 44mm do blanks. Use minimum density 750Kg m 3 MDF 650Kg m 3 hardwood ply to suit, to achieve overall thickness. Any adjustment in thickness must be made to the ply MDF only. The do ce thickness must not be reduced, otherwise the fire do rating is void. To retain the fire integrity, it is essential that the overall thickness of the completed fire do, combining do ce plus facings, does not fall below a minimum thickness. 8 7 C2006 HALSPAN FINISHES FINISHES is particularly suitable f laminating & veneering. Whether fire do not, is successful with veneer and clear lacquer, paint, plastic laminate. The fine, hard surface minimises preparation time and together with its monolithic structure, these eliminate the problems like grin-through and ripple effect, found with other types of board. Alternatively, f brush roller application a high solid water based primer ref: ED is available (complies with The Environmental Protection Act 1990). Both primer and finish may be applied direct onto. Sand between coats with 280 grit. (Finish applied by spray, at 100 gm 2 per coat.) FEATURE GROOVES You may machine the do ce to provide a feature detail while retaining the FD60 integrity of the fire do. VENEER Decative structural veneers up to 2 mm in thickness can be applied to using the appropriate glue lines f the purpose. N.B. A balanced construction must always be maintained. HPL & PVC High pressure laminate and PVC sheeting can be applied to up to 2 mm thickness using the appropriate glue f the purpose. N.B. A balanced construction must always be maintained. These facings can be retained on all do edges by post fming other means, maintaining fire integrity. PVC protective edging can be applied maintaining the fire integrity with the use of the appropriate intumescent. PAINTING Problems usually associated with other types of board are eliminated by using f example, it is not essential to add paper veneer befe painting. With no preparation only minimal attention, do blanks provide a suitable surface f a good paint finish, eliminating the usual problems associated with other types of board. Use products such as Becker Acroma, spray 2 coats of a high solid Acid Catalyst primer. (primer ref: DF ). test permit up to 6 No feature grooves per side x 4mm. Grooves no closer than 150mm to top and bottom of do and 150mm apart. Alternatively f groove/s up to 11mm depth, the grooves in either both faces must be at least 12 from the do edge. A timber MDF insert may be planted into the face and further machined f a feature detail. It is essential to retain a minimum 20mm centre thickness in the ce. INTUMESCENT MATERIAL The installation of fire dos and overpanels requires the use of intumescent strip, which may be fitted into the do leaf frame. However, if intumescents can be grooved into the frames, rather than the leaf, this will aid the leaf installation. Both PVC encapsulated Palusol 100P and graphite based products have been approved f use with. 41 40 PRIMA PANEL DOS HALSPAN FD60 PANEL STYLE DOS INTRODUCTION has developed panelled timber do styles made from do blanks. DO STYLES A straightfward construction, requiring the ce to be machined to simulate either flat raised & fielded panel styles. A minimum of two panels and a maximum of eight are permitted. Panels must be at least 12 from the do edge and the same between panels. In addition, suggestions f alternative styles will be found in this section. A selection of geometric shapes f panels is also permitted, including arched, circular, rectangular, scalloped square. Perimeter edges of panels may be finished in hardwood, softwood MDF mouldings and may be any profile required.
