3 Critical Steps in this Activity Potential Hazards Risk Controls Inspection Inspection of base of trench for suitability. Excavation to line and level Installation Install bedding.! Base of trench unsuitable for proposed installation causing pipe movement and possible failure and flooding. Trench at incorrect location or depth Trench encroaches upon other structures or services Trench not sufficiently wide for planned installation Insufficient thickness of bedding causing deformation of pipe, damage to pipe and pipe movement and possible failure and flooding. Insufficient compaction of bedding Workers in trench struck or buried by bedding material being placed in trench. Once the trench is excavated to the required depth the base of the trench is inspected. If the base is soft or unstable discuss the proposed method of rectification with your supervisor. Rectification of unstable base areas is completed in accordance with instruction from the Works Officer. Bedding as per the Moreland Technotes is placed over the full width of the trench. The bedding is shaped to ensure uniform support over the length of the pipe, including at the socket (where appropriate). The bedding shall be compacted by plate compactor or equivalent. Once the pipe or culvert sections are in place, bedding is forced around the pipe barrel with shovels to provide pipe support. An additional layer of bedding material is placed around and over the pipe and compacted. No workers to be in trench section where bedding is being placed by backhoe, excavator or front end loader. 4 Placing of Pipe and Box Culverts in Trench. Laying of Pipes Laying of Box Culverts! Workers struck or crushed by pipes or culvert sections being lowered into trench. Pipe sections installed incorrectly. Box culvert sections installed incorrectly. All pipe/culverts to be lifted and transported using approved lifting devices only. All lifting devices must have WLL marked and be inspected before use. Pipes and culvert sections are lifted at designated lifting points only. Loads not to be lifted or suspended above other workers. Workers must not be between the suspended load and installed culvert sections, trench supports or trench wall. Pipe sections are placed on the bedding with the rebate and socket ends facing upstream. The ends of the rebated and socketed pipes are fully entered. Where applicable the top of the pipe as marked is set within 5 o of the vertical axis of the culvert. Interlocking (flush) joint reinforced concrete pipes are sealed using the wide rubber rings supplied. Rubber rings are fitted to rubber ring jointed pipes. Box Culverts laid as per Moreland Technotes The box culverts are laid on the bases. All sections are firmly butted together. All joints are mortared.
