DESCRIPTION OF WORK: THE WORK TO BE PERFORMED UNDER THIS CONTRACT CONSISTS OF REPAIRING THE DAMAGE TO AT THE CHANDLER INTERCHANGE IN LINCOLN COUNTY. THE BRIDGE SHALL REMAIN OPEN TO NORMAL TRAFFIC DURING REPAIR OPERATIONS. FLAME STRAIGHTEN A PORTION OF THE DAMAGED EASTERN OUTSIDE BEAM OVER THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE EASTBOUND LANES AS INDICATED IN THE PLANS. HEAT STRAIGHTEN THE PORTIONS OF THE WEB AND FLANGES AS DIRECTED THE ENGINEER TO THEIR ORIGINAL SHAPES IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 50.04E(7) OF THE STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS. VERIFICATION OF CONDITIONS: THE DIMENSIONS OF THE BRIDGE COMPONENTS SHOWN ON THESE PLANS AND THE ORIGINAL PLANS ARE APPROXIMATE. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL VERIFY ALL DIMENSIONS NECESSARY AND SHALL BE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ACCURACY THEREOF. PRIOR TO SUBMITTING HIS BID, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL FULLY INFORM HIMSELF OF THE NATURE OF THE WORK AND CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH IT WILL BE PERFORMED. MECHANICAL MEANS MAY BE USED TO STRAIGHTEN THE MATERIAL ONLY IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE APPLICATION OF HEAT. ONLY CONTRACTORS THAT CAN DOCUMENT EXPERIENCE IN HEAT STRAIGHTENING OF DAMAGED STEEL HIGHWAY OR RAILROAD BRIDGE MEMBERS WILL BE ALLOWED TO BID ON THIS HEAT STRAIGHTENING PROJECT. ALL GAS FUELED HEATING EQUIPMENT, AS WELL AS MECHANICAL STRAIGHTENING EQUIPMENT, SHALL BE SUPPLIED THE CONTRACTOR AS NECESSARY TO PERFORM ALL HEAT STRAIGHTENING. IN GENERAL, THE METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION WILL RELY ON THE EXPERIENCE OF THE CONTRACTOR. "NATIONAL COOPERATIVE HIGHWAY RESEARCH PROGRAM" (NCHRP) REPORT NO. 271 CONTAINS BROAD GUIDES TO THIS TYPE OF REPAIR. THE STRAIGHTENING HEAT SHOULD BE APPLIED AS RAPIDLY AS POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN THE BEST STRAIGHTENING EFFECT. HEAT SHOULD BE APPLIED TO SMALL AREAS, USUALLY TRIANGULAR IN SHAPE; THE SMALL AREAS TO WHICH HEAT IS APPLIED AND THE SEQUENCE OF HEATING DIFFERENT SMALL AREAS SHALL BE DETERMINED THE CONTRACTOR TO PRODUCE THE MOST EFFICIENT STRAIGHTENING. IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED TO HEAT THE SAME SMALL AREA MORE THAN ONCE. THE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE TO WHICH THE STEEL SHALL BE HEATED IS 1200 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT (~50 DEG. C.). THE CONTRACTOR MAY VISUALLY DETERMINE THAT THIS TEMPERATURE HAS BEEN REACHED WHEN THE COLOR OF THE STEEL BECOMES A DULL RED. THE ENGINEER MAY PERIODICALLY MONITOR THE TEMPERATURE OF THE STEEL TO VERIFY THE VISUAL TEMPERATURE DETERMINATION. THE EQUIPMENT FOR CHECKING THE TEMPERATURE SHALL BE PROVIDED THE CONTRACTOR AND MEET THE APPROVAL OF THE ENGINEER. A HIGH TEMPERATURE PYROMETER IS PREFERRED FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF THE TEMPERATURE, BUT TEMPERATURE INDICATING CRAYONS OR OTHER MEANS APPROVED THE ENGINEER MAY BE USED. NO ACCELERATED OR ARTIFICIAL COOLING WILL BE PERMITTED. THE FINAL ACCEPTABLE LOCAL TOLERANCES FOR STRAIGHTNESS IN THE AREA OF THE DAMAGE SHALL BE: 1. HORIZONTAL SWEEP-- 1/4 INCH PER 10 FEET (3 M.) APPLYING HEAT TO STEEL: BEFORE APPLYING HEAT TO STEEL COATED WITH A LEAD-BASED PAINT, REMOVE ALL PAINT ON ALL SIDES WITHIN 3 INCHES OF THE HEATED AREA. CLEAN THE SURFACES TO SSPC-SP2, HAND TOOL CLEANING, OR TO SSPC-SP3, CONVENTIONAL POWER TOOL CLEANING, IN ACCORDANCE WITH CFR ALL COSTS FOR THIS CLEANING WILL BE INCLUDED IN OTHER S OF WORK.
