The depth of diamond grinding shall be sufficient enough to remove the existing bridge deck tining. This work shall be paid for under the bid item "Machine Preparation (1/4 )." 10 Use vacuum equipment or other continuous methods to remove grinding slurry and residue. Remove from the project and properly dispose of the material. Do not allow the grinding slurry to flow across lanes being used by traffic, onto shoulder slopes, into streams, lakes, ponds or other bodies of water, or gutters or other drainage facilities. DECK PATCHING SEQUENCE (Showing sequence for one lane only, other lane similar) The maximum size of a patch with fully debonded bars is limited to 4 ft. (along CL) x 8 ft. (perpendicular to CL) in Area 1. If more than 15 longitudinal bars in Area 1 are debonded for a distance of greater than 4 feet along the bars, the concrete removal shall stop and the patch area filled with Concrete Span Length /4 or as directed by the Engineer. Grade 4.0 (AE). The patches shall cure a minimum of days before concrete removal resumes adjacent to newly placed patches. Following the completionof work in Area 1, concrete removal may begin in Area 2. EDGE BEAM CONCRETE REMOVAL: Concrete removal in the edge beam/parapet is limited to 8' parallel to the centerline of bridge. The space between concrete removals shall be a minimum of 8'. If the edge beam is severly deteriorated and there is significant concrete removal contact the Bridge Office for more detailed removal guidelines. Concrete removal shall not begin in Area 2 until the final patches in Area 1 have cured a minimum of days. The maximum size of any full depth patch in Area 2 shall be limited to 4 ft. x 8 ft. in any direction. All patching and overlay concrete shall be cured according to the Specifications prior to opening the lane to traffic. The forms may be suspended from existing reinforcing bars by wire ties or a method approved by the Engineer. See KDOT Specifications for method of measurement and payment. REINFORCING IN BRIDGE DECK: Care should be exercised to prevent cutting, stretching or damaging exposed reinforcing steel. Extreme care should be exercised to avoid breaking the bond between the reinforcing steel and concrete where bars are partially exposed yet remain anchored in sound concrete. Reinforcing steel damaged, cut or deteriorated shall be replaced as directed by the Engineer. Do not wedge chipping hammer bit against reinforcement. See table for replacement bar size and minimum splice length required. Replacement of bars damaged by the Contractor shall be subsidiary to "Area Prepared for Patching". Where it is necessary to remove concrete to the bottom layer of reinforcing steel a full depth patch shall be required. Concrete Removal Line (Remove to Sound Concrete) FULL DEPTH PATCHING 1"Typ. File:KA475801(00).dgn Plot Date:2-OCT :5 Squad: INGALLS / BEK AREA PREPARED FOR PATCHING: This item shall consist of removing unsound concrete and asphalt patches from the bridge deck, cleaning reinforcing bars, filling the removed patched areas with concrete and preparing the entire area of the deck for an overlay. Quantity shown is an estimate of the areas involved. The exact areas shall be determined by tapping, before, during and after chipping operation to ensure that all unsound concrete has been removed. See KDOT Specifications. Patches shall cure a minimum of 72 hours prior to placing Waterproofing Membrane All vertical surfaces in a full depth patch shall be coated with an epoxy resin bonding agent as a subsidiary item. 9 SUMMARY OF CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURES FLEXABLE ASPHALTIC JOINT SYSTEM NOTE: Construction steps are provided for information only. Refer to manufacturer's recommendations for instalation details and specifications. Any variations in the width of the area shown to be removed shal be approved by the Engineer. Saw cut through the new asphalt overlay ful depth along both removal lines. Avoid any damage to the existing concrete deck surface Remove al material between the saw cuts including the new asphalt overlay and any unsound concrete. STEP 2: Repair any spals or damage along the existing concrete joint edges to provide a level base for the gap plates. STEP : Grit blast surfaces and dry with a hot compressed air lance. STEP 4: Instal backer rod in joint gap. STEP 5: Coat al surfaces with "DEERY Surface Conditioner (DSC)". STEP 6: Place "Stress Absorbing Mastic Adhesive (SAMA)"along bottom surface of joint opening and embed gap plates in hot "SAMA". STEP 7: Trowel hot "SAMA"over gap plates and onto al remaining uncoated surfaces. STEP 8: Dispense a bottom layer of "FBJS"material into the joint area.
