2 BSF Schools Acoustic Block / Building Schools for the Future The Challenge In 2009 Lend Lease were awarded the contract to construct 89 new Birmingham Schools under the Government s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme. Following government cuts the project was reduced to 13 schemes with Lend Lease under constant pressure to provide cost savings. Integrated Services, Wolseley UK were appointed as the key chain supplier and responsible for creating a list of approved products to ensure maximum efficiencies. AG had to demonstrate to Integrated Services, Wolseley UK (and Lend Lease) how their Acoustic blockwork could help deliver overall cost efficiencies as well as comply with acoustic standards (BB93), Sport England guidelines, the architect and structural engineer s requirements. 3 BSF Schools The Solution 140mm wide sound absorbing Alphacrete Acoustic Blocks were incorporated into Integrated Services, Wolseley UK s suite of approved products and have been supplied and installed within the Sports Halls of four of the Birmingham BSF schemes Alphacrete Acoustic Blocks were selected for the following reasons: ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE Following post-installation acoustic testing of the Sports Hall at Shenley Academy, Cundall s senior Acoustic Consultant Tom Nightingale stated that: We were delighted to see that the predicted acoustic (sound absorbing) performance of the Alphacrete Acoustic Block was confirmed by the insitu acoustic testing. COST EFFECTIVENESS Using Alphacrete Acoustic Blocks instead of standard masonry blocks and sound absorbing panels provided us with a significant overall cost saving that we could pass on to our client. COMPLIANCE WITH SPORT ENGLAND S GUIDANCE In addition to sound performance standards, Sport England guidelines state that the walls of sports halls should have an Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of around 50%. AG developed a new colour for the Acoustic block range called Sporting Green specifically designed to achieve an LRV of 50%. Sporting Green colour Acoustic blocks were supplied for the Sports Halls at Shenley and Heartlands Academy.

A structural block with a compressive strength of 10kPa and excellent fire ratings. Low-maintenance self-finished aesthetically pleasing finish. Section 1 of BB93 was replaced in 2013 with a document based on the PSBP acoustic design guide which is included as part of the output specifi cation for the Priority Schools Building Programme (PSBP). Testing showed that installing Alphacrete Acoustic blockwork (a Class D sound absorber to EN ISO 11654) from ground floor up to a minimum of 3m in conjunction with a Class C perforated roof liner provides effective distribution of absorption and diffusion within the listener plane. This solution was confirmed as highly cost effective by the contractor whom we worked with on previous BSF schemes and is now a baseline design within the new acoustic performance standards for future PSBP projects. There is currently no other self finished masonry block available that achieves this level of sound absorption and has been certified by independent testing. NB.
