2 APPENDIX Eye and Face Protection Appropriate eye and/or face protection is required when employees are in areas where there is exposure to eye and face hazards from flying particles, molten metal, liquid chemicals, acids, caustic liquids, chemical gases or vapors or potentially injurious light radiation (i.e. arc flash). Following CSA Standards apply: CSA-Z Eye and Face Protectors ; CSA- Z , Industrial Eye and Face Protectors. Flying fragments, objects, large chips, particles, sand, dirt, etc. Splash irritating mists, etc. Nuisance dust Optical radiation & Arc Flash Impact: chipping, grinding, masonry work, woodworking, sawing, drilling, chiseling, scraping, sanding, mowing, visiting construction sites, etc. Chemical handling/testing, cleaning, painting, checking batteries, pesticide application, etc. Dust: Woodworking, buffing, particularly dust conditions, etc. Light/ Radiation: Electric arc welding, gas welding, cutting, torch soldering, short-circuit arc flash etc. Spectacles with side protection, goggles, or face shield. Face shields should be used for severe exposure and can only be worn over primary eye protection. Persons whose vision requires the use of prescription lenses must wear either protective devices fitted with prescription lenses or protective devices designed to be worn over regular prescription eye wear. Goggles. For severe exposure use face shield. Face shields can only be worn over primary eye protection (glasses or goggles). Goggles Welding helmets, welding shields or welding goggles with appropriate shades. Grounds Keeper, Electrician, Plumber, Care Taker, Mechanic, Teachers (i.e. Art, Drama, CTS), Science Technicians Grounds, Teachers (i.e. Art, Drama, CTS), Science Technician, Paint Shop, Plumbing, Mechanic Carpenter, Grounds, Teachers (i.e. Art, CTS) Plumber, Welder, Mechanic, electrician, electronics technician, and Teachers (i.e. CTS) Head Protection Appropriate head protection is required when employees are in areas where there is a potential for injury to the head from falling or moving objects or when they are exposed to electrical conductors which could be contacted by the head. Following CSA Standard apply: CAN/CSA-Z (R1998), Industrial Protective Headwear. Limbs and branches, construction hazards, bump hazards, falling objects Tree cutting or pruning, visiting construction areas, routine activities where an overhead hazard exits or there is a possibility of falling objects, etc. CSA approved hard hats, hard caps or bump caps Grounds, Plumber, Electrical, Teachers (i.e. CTS and dealing with apprenticeship skills on construction sites) Safety Advisory Services SWP-Part

3 Foot and Leg Protection Appropriate foot protection is required when employees are in area where there is danger of foot injuries due to falling and rolling objects, slip hazards or objects piercing the sole, and where employees are exposed to electrical hazards. All food protection must be CSA approved. Following CSA standards apply: Z195-02, Protective Footwear ; Z195-M92 (R2000), Protective Footwear. Falling and/or rolling objects, sharp objects, slip hazards, sharp objects Lifting and transporting parts, equipment, working in wet areas, etc. CSA Approved slip resistant soles, puncture-resistant shanks, water-resistant and compression-resistant toes Lower leg guards for impact resistance Knee pads/guards where kneeling on hard surfaces is a regular part of the task performed Grounds, Maintenance Worker, Mechanic, Carpenter, Glazer, Welder, Warehouse workers, Housekeeping Services, Locksmith, Teachers (i.e. CTS), Operators/Cleaners Hand and Arm Protection Appropriate hand protection is required when employees are in areas where their hands are exposed to skin absorption of harmful substances, severe cuts or lacerations, severe abrasions, punctures, chemical burns, thermal burns or harmful temperature extremes. Appropriate gloves are dependent upon the type of chemical contaminant or physical hazards. Special care must be taken when selecting gloves for chemical exposure to assure glove is resistant to the chemical in question. Chemicals, sharp edges, abrasive surfaces, heat and steam Handling chemicals, welding, cutting, metal working, material handling, etc. Chemical resistant gloves including but not limited to vinyl, latex, rubber, nitrile, neoprene, leather or other cut resistant work gloves, heat resistant gloves Plumber, Science Technician, Electrical Shop, Grounds, Glazer, Locksmith, Teachers (i.e. CTS) Hearing Protection Appropriate hearing protection is required when employees are in areas where there is exposure to excessive noise levels. Protection is not required unless the employee s time weighted average exposure exceeds 85 decibels (dba) for an 8 hour exposure. However, it is recommended that appropriate hearing attenuators are provided to employees for use in all high noise areas (mechanical rooms, boiler rooms, etc.) as a precautionary measure. Following CSA Standard apply: Z , Hearing Protection Devices Performance, Selection, Care, and Use.
