Title Amazon Deforestation 40% increase between 2001 and 2002! Recent advert by Paddy Power. Read more on this story here

Title Amazon Deforestation What is deforestation? 40% increase between 2001 and 2002!

Title Amazon Deforestation in 2005 Almost one fifth of the Amazon rainforest had been cleared. 9,000 sq miles cut down in 2004 alone; the second highest on record, 6% higher than the previous 12 months. Deforestation was worst in the state of Mato Grosso 40% increase between 2001 and 2002!

Title Amazon Deforestation in 2014 Deforestation has fallen by 70% in the Brazilian Amazon region during the last decade from a 10 year average of 19,500 km 2 in 2005 to 5,800 km 2 in 2013.

Title Amazon Deforestation in 2014 Questions In which year (s) was deforestation at the highest? What might be one reason for the cutting down of cutting down i.e. the drop in the rate of deforestation?

Title Amazon Deforestation in 2014 How large is one hectare? 1 hectare is 1.4 football pitches Greenpeace say that during a 90 minute football match 122 football pitches of rainforest are cut down. Convert this to hectares (Multiply by 1.4) How accurate is Greenpeace s data? In 2013 the amount of deforestation was 5800 km km 2 multiply by 100 = hectares per year divided by 365 = hectares per year. divided by 24 = hectares per hour divided by 60 = hectares per min multiply by 90 = hectares per 90 min match

Title Causes of deforestation This pie chart showing deforestation in the Amazon by cause is based on the median figures for estimate ranges. Please note the low estimate for largescale agriculture. Between soybean cultivation resulted in a small overall percentage of direct deforestation. Nevertheless the role of soy is quite significant in the Amazon. As explained by Dr. Philip Fearnside, "Soybean farms cause some forest clearing directly. But 40% increase between 2001 and 2002! they have a much greater impact on deforestation by consuming cleared land, savanna, and transitional forests, thereby pushing ranchers and slash-and-burn farmers ever deeper into the forest frontier. Soybean farming also provides a key economic and political impetus for new highways and infrastructure projects, which accelerate deforestation by other actors. Source: Mongabay.com

Causes Title and effects of deforestation Read about the causes and effects of deforestation here. Read about deforestation in the Amazon here (wiki) Amazon deforestation in graphics (rainforests.mongabay.com) Tasks: What are the main causes of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest? 40% increase between 2001 and 2002! What are the main effects of Amazon deforestation?

Title The Iguaçu Falls Probably the most beautiful waterfall on the planet. On the Iguaçu river near where Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay meet. Named by local Indian language: y [water]+ wa su [big]. 100 to 150 waterfalls. Devil s throat is the biggest waterfall. Discovered by Spanish in Read more here

Title The power of protected area status Agriculture replaces a forest In 1973 signs of deforestation are evident, but the forest cover is extensive throughout the region. By 2000, the protected Iguaçu national park, located in Argentina on the border with Brazil and Paraguay, is sharply defined as the dark green enclave on the right of the images
