6 REGISTER USED IN PHOTOGRAPHY FIELD. (A Case Study in Photographic Community at UMM) ABSTRACT Communication between human being is an important thing. We use a language to communicate with others and to express our ideas. Registers are language varieties that are used by the people in particular settings and situations. In this study, the researcher investigates registers used in photography field (A Case Study in Photographic Community at UMM). It answered these two following research problems: (1) What are the registers used by the photographic community of University of Muhammadiyah Malang? (2) What are the dominant registers used by the photographic community of University of Muhammadiyah Malang? This study used descriptive qualitative design to know the registers and the dominant registers used by the photographic community of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The subject of this study was a part of the photographic community of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. They consisted of members of FOCUS (30) and JUFOC (30). They were 60 active members of those two communities. Therefore, the researcher needs to involve three informants of every community in order to get the data accurately. To analyze the data, the researcher used several steps. The first, identifying the data of the photographic registers. The second, list of registers used by the photographic community based on result of observation. The third, analyzing the photographic registers based on their categories. The next, arranging the data in the form of table. The last, drawing conclusion based on the data. The result of this data, the researcher found there were 51 dominant registers used by the photographic community of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The registers were used by the photographic community and it was also divided into some groups of register. Such as: the body of camera, technique composition, variety and characteristic lens, accessories of camera, photo category, photograph technique, and lighting function.
