The woodworking industry major, important employer in many of the Member States of the EU International Cooperation - Woodworking industry 2,5 million people in the EU27. - The total number of companies in the EU27 is estimated at (including the furniture industry). - Unemployment rate has never been higher in the EU (10% in November 2014) the woodworking industries have difficulties of finding skilled workers and attract them to work in a woodworking company. 2
1. Sector is not seen as attractive sector The public tends to imagine jobs in the industry as manual, repetitive and unskilled, poorly paid and without any great career prospects. Young people in particular are put off as they see no scope for exercising their creativity. Perception of the wood-based industries - Qualitative study, European Commission in 2002 Public perception jobs in the wood working industry: as manual, repetitive and unskilled, poorly paid, no career prospects,... Stereotyps - linked to the nature of the products - as a potential employer, this sector did not seem very attractive 3
2. Demographic changes old work force Over the coming years, many workers will reach the retirement age and will leave the sector. CEI Bois Demographic This concern has been highlighted by the European Economic and Social Committee in their opinion on the opportunities and challenges for a more competitive European Woodworking and furniture sector (EESC, CCMI/088, 5 October 2011). 4
Woodworking and furniture industry statistic In 2013 the woodworking and furniture industry employed about 2.25 million workers in the EU 28. Not withstanding this important decrease the woodworking and furniture industry remains an important employer in the EU, especially in rural areas as the sector is the EU s fifth largest manufacturing industry. 5
Ageing of the EU population - effect on the demographic situation of the employment in both the woodworking and furniture industry In % of the employees are between 25 and 39 while this was still 45% in When in 2005 only 9% of the workforce is older than 55, this has increased to almost 15% in
Older workers How to keep them active? The EU28 employment rate for people aged rose from 36.9% in 2000 to 51.1% in the first quarter of NETHERLANDS: Age-conscious personnel policy integrated in collective bargaining BELGIUM: Sustainable careers DENMARK: The participatory approach Living longer means working longer. Retirement at 65 is passé. From an employer s perspective, older workers contribute experience and are often willing to work part-time. Source: CEI Bois Demographic 7
Attracting young workers Despite everything the EU and its member countries are doing, employment prospects for young people in the EU are bleak. More than 5.5 million young people are unemployed in the EU28. In 2013, 13% young people between 15 and 24 are neither working, nor in education or training. UK: Wow I made that FINLAND: Koskisen Academy ITALY: TINO SANA GROUP SWEDEN: Teknikcollege BELGIUM: Deductions on social security contributions for employing workers younger than 26 SLOVENIA: Wood is beautifull Source: CEI Bois Demographic 8
