Breakthrough Energy Coalition Mission Statement Catalyze investment, research, development and commercialization of technology and innovations targeting the reversal of climate change Challenges Role of Government Promising concepts lack funding to develop Potential returns for higher risk, early stage investments in energy innovations not commensurate with other VC opportunities Pervasive, incumbent energy infrastructure Advance and increase R+D in clean energy invention & innovation by applying successful funding models from other sector initiatives Partnership between government research and committed private sector investors
UC Research: Pioneering the Clean Energy Future Ruihong Zhang Professor, Biological and Agricultural Engineering UC Davis UC on Capitol Hill May 24, 2016
Powering Sustainable Society with Food and Agricultural Waste Ruihong Zhang, PhD, Professor Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department University of California, Davis May 18, 2016
Waste Problems United States produces 225 million tons of municipal solid waste each year, of which 100 million tons is organic and agricultural waste. The direct cost to landfill these materials exceeds $4 billion per year. Americans throw away 40% of food. 34 million tons of food waste are disposed in landfills each year, costing $1.3 billion and many environmental pollution and public health problems. Conversion of wastes into energy and other valuable products will save the environment and create jobs.
UC Davis Innovative Solutions in Collaboration with CleanWorld and Full Cycle Bioplastics into a low carbon bioenergy, biofuel, bioplastics, biofertilizer.
Anaerobic Digestion Biogas Biogas Energy Electricity and heat Natural gas Compressed natural gas Liquefied natural gas Gasoline Chemicals Organic Waste Food Green Agricultural CH 4, CO 2 H 2, CO 2 Organic acids Sugars, Amino acids, Fatty acids Anaerobic Digestion Digester Effluent Nutrients Fibers Water
High Solids Anaerobic Digestion Technology Use efficient microbes housed in wellcontrolled biodigesters to break down and convert a variety of organic waste into biogas (methane and carbon dioxide), nutrients and water. Biogas is used for energy generation and nutrients and water are made into biofertilizer products. Has been scaled up for commercial applications with three projects in Davis and Sacramento, California, converting 150 tons of food and agricultural waste into energy, fuel and fertilizer
Lab to Commercial Scale Up for High Solids Anaerobic Digestion (HSAD) Technology Economic and Environmental Analyses Design of commercial plant Microbiology and Process Engineering Determine digestibility Pilot Design Feedstock Demonstration Pilot Construction Pilot Testing Effluent digester Stability ` Process scale-up Pilot testing 50,000 Gallons Concept development laboratory testing Gallons Engineering design Equipment selection Construction, Operation,Monitoring, >300,000 Gallons Commercialization By CleanWorld
UC Davis Biodigester is Powering Campus Treats 20,000 tons per year of mixed organic wastes Combines biogas and landfill gas to generate 5.6 GWh electricity per year Reduce greenhouse gas emissions Electricity 4,000 metric tons CO 2 e Feedstock emissions 6,000 metric tons CO 2 e Operation Since January 2014

Sacramento BioDigester is Powering City Project Host Partner: Sacramento County Treats 40,000 tons per year of food waste, producing RNG to fuel Atlas Disposal s waste trucks Produces 700,000 diesel gallon equivalents per year of renewable natural gas for area fleets Produces valuable soil amendments for area farms Operation since January 2013
Fertilizer and Soil Products from Digestate Custom design biofertilizers products according to plant needs - Nutrients - Microbes - Pathogen free
Public Education with UC Davis Biodigester
Current Research and Future Directions for Improving Anaerobic Digestion Technology Develop new generation of biodigesters with higher values in products, higher efficiency and less cost Increase the digestibility of biomass materials, improve microbes, and shorten digestion time, making digesters smaller and less costly Develop smart biodigesters that can better control and monitor digestion processes, making the digesters easier to operate and more efficient Integrate processes and technologies for producing multiple products, including biopolymers and bioenergy, improving the economics of anaerobic digestion systems
